Modeling a Tunnel | Goldfield & Calico
Let's build a tunnel! In this installment of the On30 Goldfield & Calico project, I model a tunnel that goes through the backdrop to connect the "on-stage" parts of the layout to the backstage staging yard. First, I paint and detail the track, then it's time to build a square-set timber tunnel portal and model the rocky interior and exterior of the tunnel itself. Track finishing, wood construction techniques, and foam rock-work scenery all in one video!

Installing a Backdrop | Goldfield & Calico
zhlédnutí 6KPřed 14 dny
In this installment of the On30 Goldfield & Calico project, I repurpose and reinstall a large section of backdrop from the old Thunder Mesa layout. After cutting it down to size, the backdrop is securely mounted on the new layout and then some portions are repainted to match the new scenes. There's a little, carpentry, a little ingenuity, and a little backdrop painting in this video! Thanks for...

Excellent! One detail suggestion. As you filled the retaining wall with rocks/gravel/dust, a little should fall directly on the track and shade it in a line across the track. Anything bigger than a pebble, they'll clean off but not gravel and dust so there should be a definite red stripe.

It’s always such an inspiration to see an expert craftsman and artist like you at work! I’m also on the On30 railroading Facebook group - you may have seen some of my recent posts like my Banta wooden cab conversion of a Porter On30 0-4-2 of a few days ago. I only came into this hobby about two years ago - obviously lots to learn. My small “Black Dog Drift Mine” layout started just something that my young grandson could enjoy with me - but I soon became addicted. So a massive HUGE thanks to you for all you’ve done for this wonderful hobby; and for the tons of YT videos you’ve put out which have SO helped guide people like me in the right direction. I haven’t reached your high standards yet probably never will but this is my first ever railroad layout and I’m sure my working will become more refined over time - but HEY, it’s my railroad where “anything goes” is OK and I’m enjoying it. 🧨⛏🧨⛏🇬🇧🚂

Here's a thing I struggle with. I remember when most layouts were giant bowls of spaghetti and minimal scenery. I love scenery and build my line into several interconnected scenes. Yet, I need to remember that track on a board (plywood central) might be fine for someone who is not the creative type but likes watching trains go round.

Very informative video Dave... One adhesive option you missed, which is an old technique, but works great is the old "Acetone and Ambroid" glue method. I don't think Ambroid cellulose glue is available any longer, but Duco makes a clear cellulose glue that's the exact same thing. Also... Though a bit expensive, this is the same mix as you get when you buy a container of "wood hardener" for solidifying rotten or punky wood. It's just acetone and a cellulose glue mix. You mix acetone and the cellulose glue to about a 3:1 ratio (solvent to glue). Paint the mix on both pieces of material you want to glue. Two to three coats is best (it dries fast). Once the last coat is dry, position the two parts together, then hit the joint with some clean acetone. Hold until the acetone evaporates, which takes about 30 sec, or less if you blow on it. The result is a super strong joint with no glue blobs... If you're not sloppy with the glue mix, you can even stain the wood after gluing without any light spots in the wood. I use this method exclusively for gluing my laser board window laminations together, as it's a solid bond, with no glue residue. The other benefit to this method is that you don't add any additional thickness to two materials that are joined together. The glue layer is micro thin, but still very strong. Not for everyone, but it's a great option to add to all the other options out there.
