I couldn't disagree with Drumdums more on movies like Halloween Ends but damn... I still love the reviews and appreciate hearing opposite opinions.
This is a very fair take on the whole thing.
When Chris initially announced that he would no longer critique films, I just said, okay this channel probably isn't for me any more. I didn't unsub or anything, I just watched probably 70% less of his content only for the fact that if he posted a video I knew he at least liked the film. It killed the mystery and intrigue of the review, imo.
You're right though about the piling on thing. You really put it in context, at the end of the day, it's just a movie review.

The Hilariocity review for Jaws 4 is my favorite video on CZcams to this day. He’s such a great reviewer! But he’s entitled to change his mind, change his path… and like you said, he’s just human. People need to calm down.
Being a movie critic and refusing to critique a film is just bad form. I've followed Chris for years and have bo need to bash him, but I won't watch his videos from here on out. His channel has been on the decline for a while and is full on being sacrificed to appease Hollywood. No hate or drama, just is what it is.

@inere James Rolfe main gig was never being a film critic. He occasionally reviewed a contemporary film on his channel, he never considered himself a film critic. Huge difference with Chris Stuckmann, who only does movie reviews. If the AVGN sudden became the Happy video game nerd, people would be pissed as well, especially if he does it because he´s afraid of the video game industry
No lie, I turned off Chris’ video after 5 minutes. I don’t need to spam him with hate because “I’m an adult” and “why?”. I just knew after 5 minutes, the video didn’t interest me.
I don’t think criticism is hate. Everyone in the comments was respectful, they just spoke their minds. That’s not hate.
@Las645 there was quite a bit of hating going on in his comments that I read and you could tell that most of them either didn't watch the whole video or had no idea that he was no longer is a movie critic.

Remember when James Rolfe (Angry Video Game Nerd) kinda did this same thing with Ghostbusters 2016? He said it perfect, Why pay to see something you know that's going to be trash. He got some backlash but I can't remember if it was real bad?

This is the first I've heard it. I moved on from Chris when he said he would no longer criticize a movie because he wanted to get into the biz. I mentally wished him the best and moved on to reviewers who will be honest with their reviews without fear of upsetting the industry.
I almost envy Chris. He makes one video and the whole internet reacts to it. That’s CZcams power right there.

There are a handful of channels I go to to determine whether or not I should see a film, maybe 4 or 5, and you're one of those channels. I watched Out of Darkness based on your rec and my girl and me had an awesome night at the movies.
Yeah im the same way. I got a person for each type of movie. Sci-fi and horror I'll listen to Lee. Even if he can't say Harkonnen right(,lol.. had to bust his balls )
Best thing i done in a long time is stop watching reviewers, and just go with it and enjoy what i enjoy. I would recomend it.

Alright, listen, the comment about him endorsing "Better Help" is spot on.
It's not, Better Help has been outed multiple times from high profile content creators as a complete joke of a service that sells your data for profit. Stuckmann is almost definitely aware of this, but he has about as much integrity as a fox in a chicken coop.
He wasn't defending Madame Webb at all. It was the catalyst of him letting out his thoughts on why movies turn to crap and that it's not always the fault of the director or actors.
Exactly! He neither defended nor attacked it, but provided insight on what often happens regarding studio movies! He NEVER said this is what DEFINITELY happened with Madam Web, just what he suspects, to some level or another, might have happened…and what he suspects DOES happen fairly often, with studio movies. That lack of nuance the people with the fake outrage have is baffling!

@@nevertellmetheodds9869, I watched Cody Leach’s video on this subject, and although Cody Leach wasn’t harsh on Chris and even defended certain things, I do disagree with him on the things he criticized about Chris. I disagree about Chris’s video not telling people anything they didn’t already know. A lot of people DON’T know or realize that sometimes studios interfere with artistic vision. Cody might think it’s common knowledge because he himself is a movie critic, but not everyone who goes to reviews are neck deep into the in’s and out’s of Hollywood behind the scenes. And I disagree that Chris was acting holier than thou just because he said he didn’t want to bash movies. In no way, shape, or form does that translate to him saying every negative review is a bashing of a particular movie. He doesn’t want to give negative reviews, and he especially doesn’t want to bash movies, two separate things but bashing is taking that negative review and basically going one step further-being nasty about it.

Also, Chris was being negative towards the studio in that video, but he has said that he only wants to focus on the positive for the last couple of years. i agree. He used to have great reviews. But now that he is trying to make a movie, he doesnt want to offend anyone. This is why I love this channel more now!
Yeah same here too I stopped watching his videos because he doesn’t give movies grading anymore and he is so soft now these days and I just can’t take him seriously 😒 and I just don’t care about his new film Shelby Oaks I could care less about his career now unfortunately

Think this was the straw that broke the camel's back as far as people waiting for the goahead to take shots at Stuckmann. The catalyst was initially not reviewing Sound of Freedom.

I think people didn't get Chris, he wasn't defending the movie, just defending all the victims related to it and echoing what we all think about the current situation, studios and now AI writing are killing the industry. Bth thnks for your balanced review
Yeah Stuckmann doesn't really deserve this kind of pile-on he's getting.
The fact is, he's been completely transparent about what his channel is the past few years. HE IS NO LONGER A CRITIC. He doesn't claim to be one, and he doesn't want to be one.
To me, this makes his channel just kind of unwatchable now. I'm no longer really a fan of his content and hardly ever watch it because of that reason. But so much of the hate he's getting is from people who are under the impression that Stuckmann still considers himself and his channel to be a movie review/movie critic channel when it just simply isn't. And everyone is acting like there's this big gotcha by pointing out why he's refused to critique movies; as if he himself hasn't transparently outlined the exact reasons why he doesn't want to do it anymore. You can disagree, but you're essentially disagreeing with something that he said like 2 years ago and you're just late to the party now because you're upset he's not dog-piling on Madame Webb the way you wanted him to.

I agree with everything here except that his channel is unwatchable now. All the other points made I agree with. His positive reviews are basically the same high quality reviews he’s always given. He just no longer assigns a score and no longer does negative reviews. That’s not a big deal. I’ll just kind of assume if a movie is getting panned pretty much universally by most other critics and Chris doesn’t put a review up, then he probably didn’t like it-no biggie. There are probably 1,000 other channels I can watch if I want to hear the negative reviews for said movie.
I think most of it was overblown but I think some of the criticism is fair. I've no problem with Chris no longer being a movie critic but he comes off as pretentious when he does say things like I don't grade movies or give negative reviews anymore because I respect filmmakers and I love movies too much. That is bulls@it, that is acting like above it all and I'm not into that safe space mindset which has made America softer. Again, no problem with him not wanting to do it anymore but giving a movie a bad review doesn't make someone less of a film lover. Also, he said that he wants to focus on the positive on his channel and not focus on the negative but he's negative towards the studio in that video. My question to Chris if I saw him face to face would be which is it?
I don’t watch chris much these days but I specifically clicked on his vid bc i was curious what he had to say knowing he only reviews movies he likes and I totally understood where he was coming from and it made sense. Similar issues exist in my field which has nothing to do with movies. I thought it was interesting and kept it moving. Didn’t realize him defending creative people would get twisted 🤦🏾♀️

I still check out his content from time to time. He's one of the few ones out there who talks about mainstream & none mainstream content. Animes, indie films, blockbusters etc. Agree with your thoughts! Stuff like this make Perfect blue 1997 more relevant. Oshi no Ko is also another great example. It also happens alot with other celebrities, especially Idols.
The problem I have with this whole thing is that myself and others feel like he tricked people with clickbait. I thought he was going to finally start criticize movies again and start with Madam Web. Nope, he has right to do whatever he wants with his channel, but people have a right to not be tricked into watching something and it turns out to be completely different! If was really serious about all this, he would delete all the negative reviews off his channel so he wouldn't make any money off them. But he won't do it. Gotta keep that cash coming in! the whole thing feels scummy and like a scam to me. He is acting holier than though, but still make money off those negative reviews. That's why people are upset

Cody Leach and Adam Does the Movies pretty much say how I feel about it, Chris has said somethings that come off as being a little too far up his own a@@. I’m disappointed in the critical drinker in reacting to his video with other grown adults, criticizing, or making a joke out of him every few seconds, it really got old I just do not understand or comprehend the point of it doing it multiple times? youtube can be a strange world. I simply wanted to get some Madame Web reviews. I was watching Chris among others. When I saw Chris wasn't really reviewing in the traditional sense, I moved on. No harm, no foul. and then HOLY CRAP...all of this drama..over his innocuous comments. People..get lives..the man was just expressing his thoughts. sheeesh. Drumdums rocks for keeping it simply real.
It’s not about what he did. It’s about why he’s doing it and the fact that he’s lying about it. He’s also throwing every movie critic under the bus. He’s also insulting every viewer of traditional movie critics.

I like Chris, and you're right it's his channel he can do what he wants, but people can say whatever they want in the comments that's how this works and the notion that you can't critique the critiquer is ridiculous. He didn't review the movie. He had a semi clickbait thumbnail and title. He spent the whole time talking about studio interference that's nothing new. Everyone knows that's a thing. He made the video cause he had a sponsor, and he knew it would get views. He was playing the CZcams game.

Stuckmann can do whatever he wants in his channel. Now, that being said, it's clear that his change is due to him wanting to be part of Hollywood, so he is afraid of closing possible doors in the film industry which is kinda pathetic but that's just my opinion.

I watched his whole video. Unfortunately we live in a culture that loves to spew hate. If he’s not hating on the film and people cant agree with him then they just spew hate towards him. I agree we are all human and entitled to what we want to do. But everything is so negative right now people don’t like other people. Especially if someone happens to have a different opinion than them. It’s a sad time to be alive.

I’d argue we live in a society where people want to think, say, and act however they want, and have absolutely no push back on the matter.
To be honest with you, the reason why we started doing CZcams in the first place was because of Chris Stuckmann in the early days. Ever since he hit 1 million subscribers, he has been different. Lying to his audience about films & video games because the studios are paying him to speak highly of those things even if they’re flat out broken like the new Spider-Man game for PS5, which he lied, and said, is a perfect video game with no clipping, which absolutely isn’t true, I have the game. I just spent 40 hours playing it, and I know for a fact that it’s loaded with glitches and clipping.. so I don’t really care for the drama given that I haven’t watched his channel in years aside from the curiosity of what review he gave Spider-Man 2 for PS5. I feel like this whole thing wouldn’t be as big of a deal, if Sony wasn’t giving his channel money and products. Back in 2014, around the Sony leaks, Stuckmann had nothing nice to say about Sony. Unfortunately, money talks, and BS gets pedaled. That’s why I choose your channel over his every time, Lee. You didn’t sell out like he did, but you also don’t see me going over to his channel & spamming him in the comments like those people. Stuckmann doesn’t respond to his comments anyways, EVER, (also a HUGE red flag, even before he was hella big) so why does anyone even try with him? It’s not worth it anymore, he’s not a wholesome creator anymore like you or I Lee. He gave that up for money. As for all the people that are hopping into Chris’s comment section saying hateful things cut the crap, I got problems with the guy too, but you don’t see me doing that. When I watched his video, I got the impression he felt pity for the filmmakers who were given basically a thankless studio task. So the criticism was less at them and more at Sony, who don't seem to care about the content they're churning out beyond marketability.
I don't blame him for that perspective, I feel similarly after watching (and loathing) all these Spider-adjacent projects.

The whole Chris Stuckmann thing was weird for me because i used to watch his channel a lot, and I stopped because the videos just weren't that interesting to me anymore but it wasnt even the lack of negativity, his energy just seemed different overall and I found myself tuning out watching them. This entire thing blowing up surprised me because I didn't realize it was a whole thing because my opinion was like, ok well he's just a dude whose life is changing a lot and has shifted gears, the channel just isn't really for me anymore, no big deal, I wish him well. Do I miss him making content I enjoy? Sure. Do I think he or any other youtuber or person/artist in general owes it to me or to anyone to keep doing the same thing forever if they don't want to? Absolutely not, that's absurd. I'm tired of the way people feel entitled to just draining the blood out of others for entertainment. Looking around at where society is, that mentality is not doing any good for us. Thanks for your humanity and your take on this

It's kind of ironic that he created a product and is getting feedback on it like the moviemakers and studios do. Feedback he doesn't want to give any more. It's his channel to do what he wants but also his viewers right to not like what he is doing. Some take it too far but I think at least initially people were responding to a feeling of phoniness especially with how clickbaity the video was . His content isn't for me because I'm interested in film criticism but to each their own
Coincidentally he decides to stop the critiquing portion of being a movie critic at the same time he decides to become a filmmaker.
The perception is that he wants to avoid critiques of his own film.
Agreed that he can do what he wants with his own channel, but declining to do the exact thing his channel was built on is nonsensical.

I unsubscribed from his channel the day he made a video where he told us(his audience at the time) what he plans to do… although I unsubscribed from his channel and don’t watch his vids anymore, he was completely honest on where he was taking his channel, and I respect his decision, just don’t want to watch his vids anymore if he is going to hold off criticism because of his personal reasons… I think he got too big amount of hate over his personal life decisions. however, he is the first movie CZcamsr I ever saw and he paved the way to the three movie CZcamsrs I still watch(Sean Chandler, Cody Leach and specially Drumdums) so that’s good.

This isn't necessarily my view but to play 'devil's advocate': I think it can be safely said that many people don't like what they view as a 'schill' or 'sell-out' or someone they think has crossed a threshold into corporate self service, right? Thar sort of mindset has always been a part of humanity's tendency suite. I can reason that Chris's refusal to treat "Madame Web" 'appropriately' perhaps felt like a flavor of betrayal - That it was a sign that "we're losing another good one to the money dangling behemoth'. The severity of responses (some) have prompted me to think it's deeper than a simple disagreement of opinion about some shitty movie - as if Chris were signaling that he'd spare the rod if the cash is green... Just an argument I could imagine being made.

I don’t have an issue with Chris’s decision to not make negative reviews for whatever reason. In fact, I appreciate him being so honest with why he’s chosen to pivot his channel.
I have an issue with his snide remarks about film critics, his opinion on film criticism in general, and how he clickbaited his audience, leading them to believe he will do a negative review which is what is audience has been begging for since he stopped doing them, just so he can get money on his advertisement for better help.
I think it’s insulting to his audience that literally crowd funded for his movie so he can have all the money he needs to fully realize his vision.
Constructive criticism is warranted.

People have the right to critique CZcams channels, just like movie reviewers have the right to critique movies. Saying "Oh Chris Stuckmann can do whatever he wants with his channel", well duh. Just like any film studio can make whatever film they want to make. But the critics can also say whatever they want about it. And yes, critique should be civilized, but I doubt Stuckman is getting death threats for this

Here my two cents from this Chris Stuckmann situation: I'm agree with you because just like you said: it's his channel, if he wanna go new direction of his CZcams channel for something different, that his prerogative. Plus, also like you say he is human, he didn't probably ask for negative feedback, all he did give his introspective about Madame Web, that all. It's wasn't his intentions to get backlash from other people.
Tbf the comments in the video I never really saw hate but criticizing his decision to not give out an honest review and people were just calling him out on it. Him saying he won't "bash movies" anymore feels kind of ingenuine and seems convenient due to the fact he has a movie coming out he directed and people are going to review it, it feels like a way to soften the blow if its a bad movie.
I don't follow his reviews enough to know if he actually "bashes" movies in the past but if you have a negative opinion and you back up why you thought it was bad and didn't like it, you aren't bashing a movie, you're fairly critiquing it.
Anyway I have several times not agreed with your opinions on things drumdums but always respected your opinion cause you always backed up why you didn't like something or liked did something.

I'm fine with him not wanting to criticize movies anymore as it is his choice/channel, but I can't help but feel his holier than thou attitude when it came to not reviewing Madame Web was insufferable. On the one hand, I get not being totally negative on a film and there are legitimately a few who do grasp at straws to find anything nitpicky to scrutinize. However, at the same time, if you simply say that a film director's movie is good and nothing else, the director will not improve. Like I am not saying that you should completely dog on the director, but criticism is meant to be good as it helps the person identify where they went wrong with the film and what they could do for the next one. Remember how critics disliked the original design for Sonic and later they went back and made a more appealing version and the films are well-liked as a result? That is healthy criticism.
Yeah, sure, sometimes studios do have an effect on how a movie is done, but by saying that it is completely out of the hands from the director is disingenuous. Like I know they are putting effort into their film, but that at most makes them ambitious, but they could still fail to meet their vision.

Great topic DD! The problem Chris brought upon himself is that he is a film first reviewer, that is his bread and butter and that's why fans loved and wanted to follow him for, also why outsiders respected him.. I follow him and I have seen the change over the years, his main shift not to criticise movies came when he started to make his own movie "Shelby Oaks". His reasoning is based upon how hard it is to make one. Jumping to Madam Web! Whilst Chris obviously acknowledges the film is very poor he has decided to make excuses rather than review it, like maybe it was the studio etc. Regardless for example it was maybe studio interference the movie is finished, you are not doing any favours by making excuses for this film. I personally think it's criminal to do that due to fact it will help studios make more of them with this quality. What happens now, is he only going to review the films he likes? He has unknowingly put himself in shill territory for the industry. Still love Chris but I think he has made a mistake. Big up Lee! Still caching up, I saw this at work and I had to check it out. I love the fact that there are CZcams reviewers. We've talked about and agreed on certain movies and disagreed. It's an opinion. I not tooting my own horn . However, I have an insane knowledge of directors and movies. CZcams gives me the opportunity to see how much someone knows. If they have good or bad points. Or are a schill for either side. Whether they blast something just because it's woke or because it's anti-woke. Lee you can't avoid the drama. Drama brings more subs. I dislike CZcamsrs who insist they are write or steal peoples theories.
I like your take. There are a lot of movie channels that exist only to be negative, because the algorithm loves it. it's harder to just talk about a love of movies. I dont agree with Stuckmann here, but I prefer channels like yours which are critical, but come from a place of love for movies

Chris's video on Madame Web was actually only "review" I saw of that film. And it was pretty clear the movie is not watching, judging by his reaction. So I don't really see the reason for this kind of outrage.
I watched your video about this not really hearing about the controversy. I’m a Chris Duckman subscriber. I watch the reviews of movies that I want to see so I didn’t actually watch this one because I don’t really care about that particular film, but I went and watched it after watching your video. And I don’t get what all the fuss is about. I thought his explanation of it was more insightful than anything. More of a positive way of looking at things. I appreciate what you said, and sticking up for him. As always good content, Lee. I don’t really comment a lot, but I felt the need to say something.
I love your channel man, but the best thing i done in a long time is stop watching "Reviewers" and it helped me enjoy the things i enjoy more then before.

Would Siskel and Ebert ever discuss a film currently in theaters without reviewing it and giving it their rating? Obviously not. So I think it irks people that a film critic isn’t doing his job
That’d be fine if he was still a film critic, but he’s not. He said like over two years ago that he’s not a film critic anymore. He’s primarily a filmmaker now who also makes videos talking about his favorite movies. But he’s no longer critiquing films.

Honestly, CZcams feels like there is lots of negativity. My channel is very positive and fun but I'm very small. I think Chris's new way about celebrating movies is awesome!! I love movies and appreciate them so much. This guy has earned the right to do what he wants as far as I'm concerned. As a movie reviewer or critic, I think it's important to bring up things you don't like about a film. It lets the audience know your honest and what your taste is like.

I watched the video when it first dropped and I felt it was a compromise of sorts. That he was basically saying, "Ok, I'll talk about this universally hated movie, but I'm going to do it my way,". Then I went on my way and thought nothing of it, until I found out that his simple video made everyone lose their minds.
Btw, I want to take the opportunity to promote Chris' new segment called Feature Presentation which consists of retro reviews. It's my favorite thing on his channel right now. His most recent episode was for First Blood. He makes the argument that while Rambo was clearly a victim, he may have also been low-key looking for a fight because of his military programming. I think this is a valid reasoning for why Rambo decides to walk back into the town, an action that's clearly a risky one.
I like Chris and thing he's a genuinely good dude on CZcams. I just think he's somewhat compromised now, in that he's in the business and doesn't want to be shunned from working with various people in the future. I can't take his videos at face value anymore.
