I'll start with get close which is my biggest problem Jason - I just don't have the reach with my 70-200mm for some great locations that I know where I could shoot wildlife - I'm in a debate with myself as to whether to upgrade to full frame mirrorless body or invest in a long lens like the 80-400! Decisions decisions ha ha ! I tend to use auto WB and then adjust in LightRoom to save having to remember to adjust the setting every time but I guess that's a personal preference. Timing is a great one too and getting the best light is always a challenge but you've got to be out there to catch the light so my add on here would be to get outside as often as possible to increase the chances of getting those conditions. Great stuff Jason !
Good point, you have to get close and to get close you have to a lens that can get you there. I think the best advice I can give is simply finding out whats more important to you? The long lens will change everything for you and get you close to your subjects. And we both know, know matter how advanced these mirrorless cameras are (I want one also!), its the photographer who knows how to use the camera that makes great photographs. If all you are doing is landscape then go with the mirrorless. But if you are wanting to capture more nature, birds, wildlife, etc, a long lens is a must for sure.
