TF2's Controversial Pay-to-Win Hats

  • Team Fortress 2 once had hats that gave real and significant stat increases which could even be bought with money, making them effectively pay to win.

We can all probably agree that P2W in a game like TF2 would SUCK, so Valve rightfully removed the sets in question... eventually. We take a look back at TF2 in 2010 - 2013 when these item sets were in full power and remind ourselves of just how much these hats would actually make you better at the game.
The sets in question were The Milkman (Scout), The Tank Buster (Soldier), The Gas Jockey's Gear (Pyro), The Croc-o-style Kit (Sniper) and the Saharan Spy. Whilst there were other stat changing sets in the game at the time - such as those for the Demoman, Heavy and Medic - those sets did not require the hat so only get an honourable mention in this video.
I also expect plenty of comments about the Isolationist Pack and Isolated Merc sets. Obviously these are unique in the way they interact with each other, but do of course change your stats based on your hats. But I'm sure you can see from the other sets in this video why I chose to skip those :)

Unusuals are strange and Bad. Because they dont fit TF2 Artstyle.
Also Unusuals are fortunately rare so its not big issue.
Simply unusual effects can be lazy for the price you pay not to mention its only 1% Chance to get one.
I am not biggest Fan of Unusuals but hey i speak as Generous F2P that got hat as gift. I dont really mind if someone has hat or cosmetic because as long as IT has artstyle its ok, it also helps differentiate players and more unique looks.
I use Coldsnap Cap and Mercenary Badge and thats all i need. Simply i dont want to be complex i just want to make feel that i am your friendly neighbor that tries to help you when you struggle. No need for something else. Also Pyro with this cap while simple still look generous at least for me. Because you get bored when your Factory new type of player and everyone looks down on you as loser, i am saying looks doesnt matter all that matters who you really are as person. So even with simplest design i still feel unique.
      Edit:
This wasnt meant as hate comment towards hats or unusuals, its just my opninion, so take IT with grain of salt.
So be generous and dont make people total numnuts, i dont hate anyone even if He has expensive hat or cheap one.

*IMPORTANT NOTE: These hats could ALSO be earned from drops, and even had their own craft recipes.*
People have rightly pointed out that I only mention the hats could be bought and didn't mention the other methods. I absolutely agree I should have made this clearer in the video rather than just use suggestive language like "could also be bought" which doesn't tell the full story to people who are not familiar with item drops or crafting. Sorry about that! If anyone watched and got the impression these hats could *only* be bought with money then please send a digital slap my way.
This doesn't change my feelings about pay-to-win potential. Buying from the store was still the quickest method of obtaining the hats, and the fact that buying stat changing items with money *was an option at all* was what I consider the issue. I'm not trying to imply they were straight up broken or overpowered beyond imagination, I just wanted to highlight the fact when discussing the topic of hats-that-change-your-stats that any objectively stat increasing (even just a little bit) item that can be paid for is contentious and was therefore - balance complications aside - rightfully removed from the game.

You can also buy stat changing items from the store like the phlogistinator, or jarate, and thats also the quickest way to obtain any item in particular that you are unwilling to trade or craft for some reason.
And Ive probably commented it 3 times by now but these sets were really lackluster so calling them pay 2 win is ridiculously overstated, especially when buying hats from the mann co store is the least common way people get their hats

oh yeah, personal fun fact as a shiny hat wearing pyro. theres a very noticable difference when I wear my usual loadout or full stock
    with my unusuals:
-my teammates wont spycheck me as often, but also quickly identify when theres a clone of me.
-enemies play more safe than usual
-medics trust that I'll make use of their ubers.
-enemies target me more often, seen as a clear threat.
    when I go full stock:
    -I get spychecked way more.
-enemies feel more confident in taking risks
-enemies feel more insulted to die agaisnt me
-medics will overheal me after seeing me at the top of the scoreboard but would rather uber the hat wearing power class
    No difference:
-medics tend to not pocket me
-soldiers respect the threat of an airblast after previous encounters
so its a game of attention, less attention is useful for some situations, more attention is actually handy in others.
its an interesting dynamic to explore really, you think cosmetics can be pointless greed, but deep down most people will be distracted and their choices influenced by their appearance.

I'd be willing to bet that the reduced cloak volume was meant to help the spy get around what was once the worst part of the YER -- getting that first disguise. All you have is your watch, so making it harder for your foes to hear that was decent.

I remember this specifically because I was a bit sad I didnt get the Familiar Fez in time to try the Saharan Spy + Dead Ringer combo. I remember watching videos of people using it and the decloak sound was so quiet, it was immediately obvious how over powered it was.

Set bonuses wasnt a bad idea, but having a hat requirement was stupid
instead it could just be used to make underpowered sets a little bit more usable

I understand the pay to win argument, but set bonuses were so much fun. I used the sniper one that prevented headshot deaths on this one server that didn't allow any body shot damage from snipers. I would poke my head out of spawn, get shot, resupply, and repeat. People got so MAD, lol. Maybe set bonuses can come back just without hats?

Me: I'd consider using the shortstop and mad milk to be some pretty big downsides

I have a unusual jolly jingler with ventum maris on my sniper, they not only can hear my footstep but they also can see my effect from faraway and to add more i have an isotope bazaar bargain with tornado mean green. But i don't really care since my playstyle is aggressive sniper meaning i jump everywhere to find my enemy.

Honestly, if they changed the shortstop to have some sort of on-wearer model, it'd be neat to have a health bonus, and might prove it as a mid-range nuisance kinda thing.

There is still some sets that affect stats in game, the alien promotion sets of The Isolated Merc (MK 50 and the Nostromo napalmer) and The Isolationist (Alien Cranium, Biomech Backpack and Xeno Suit) which made Each other take more damage from their respective weapon of the Nostromo Napalmer and Melee (for scout). Very niche and unlikely to show up especially as the scouts set is halloween only but thought it was worth a mention

As a former Saharan Spy, it was an extremely heartwarming gameplay because everybody started being unprepared for Spies like in 2007. I didn't have a chance to play the game in 2007 so this was a great experience.

I honestly hate how ridiculously nerfed every weapon is in today's tf2... every single weapon apart from the stock ones has a negative status, and in my opinion most of them are so useless that only the stock weapons are viable...
