Hope you enjoyed this... its fun putting these tech videos together... mainly because I learn more about what I'm using while I'm trying to film it 🤓
where is danny black mate , thank you so much for this post . I’m trying not to buy anything with a lightning jack on it and have 2 headphone dongles I don’t use for anything . Just ordered the lav . Exactly the post I was looking for ! 👌🏼
where is danny black so, do I need to buy something special for my iPhone X? I have the ear plug adapter that came with my 8
Should work with that lightning to headphone jack that comes with the phone
where is Danny Black
What software do u use to edit?
Can I hire u to edit for me?
I do freelance videography in LA, OC & SD
message me on IG if ur interested

Can I use boya mic plugged into iPhone via Apple 3.5mm to USB connector/adapter for video recording directly?? In android I use the Open Camera app as the mic doesn’t work directly...??
FINALLY!!!!!!!!! I already had that other extension, I just never used it in conjunction with the lightning adapter. YAHOOOOOOOOO! I can use my Rode lav mic again!
Thanks Danny, always coming through with the best videos
Good job, mate. I like your style and your info. all the best
Interesting to see (or hear), I'd have to get a closeup look at all the connectors to see why the adapter doesn't work. The electronics should be pretty damn simple. Also, congrats on 3K! Your channel is really growing. Keep up the good work.
I just watched this 3 times and went to Amazon and bought the Rode Lav +! Thanks!!
Awesome!!!! Thanks for letting me know. I’m still using it all the time! Such a great mic :)
is it still working on ios 16?
Thank you so much for this! I have a g7x mark II and i feel that I’m raising my voice to get better audio. Now i know i can just use my iPhone
This helped me a lot. Thanks so much!!!
Thanks! I move around a lot and need a wireless mic on to my iPhone 14 pro Any ideas?
Yo Danny I just saw your comment on Chris Hau's video so thought I'd come check out your channel - I'm really impressed man this is an awesome little tutorial/tech support video! Really professional quality to it, well put together. I also just saw your Whitsundays video which was unreal! Fantastic drone shots in that. I was in the Whitsundays filming a few months ago myself - unreal location. Keep up the good work dude :) you're clearly talented and heading in the right direction. Got a nice community that you're building here
Hey thanks so much for coming over. I really appreciate it... that’s awesome that you were in the Whitsundays ... it is unreal and I’m looking to move up there at the end of the year (hopefully) where are you from??? I’m gonna come over and check out your channel but I’m on a cruise ship and the internet sucks. (But I’ll be back in port tmw)
Oh really? Dude awesome haha I appreciate that so much, enjoy the cruise! I'm from Liverpool in the UK but just spent two years working and travelling in Australia...really fell in love with the place! It's hard not to when you see places like the Whitsundays, do not blame you at all for wanting to move up that way!
Thanks so much i had this problem with an extension cable for my lav mic. Then I watched your video and looked at the plugin and noticed the lines. I know now what to look for!
Oh great! So happy to have helped out... glad you got it all sorted out :)
You did very well!
Same problem has mt iPad also!
Good to know!
Thank you you really helped me!
Bought my lav mic and ran into this problem bought the adapter and now it works beautifully thx for this video!
Bro I can't believe you don't have more subs. Your vids are fire dude. I saw one of your comments on a Casey neistat video so I came over to your channel. Good luck in the future!
Hey Johnny! Thanks so much for the comment.. ya getting subs on CZcams can be a pretty tough task... but it’s growing and that’s all anyone can really hope for. I appreciate the support :) 👍
Hey, I bought a Sony EMC stereo lava mic, and also the TRS to TRRS 0.138 in adapter, but it doesn’t work on my iPhone XS MAX. Any thoughts??
Thank you for answering all of my questions in one video!!
My pleasure jake !!
Oh my god you actually dont know how much this is going to help us with sound quality now!
Oh and congrats on 3K
We were setting up for a FB live....couldn't make it work and then we found you! Thanks!
Ah so glad I could help!! I use that set up all the time with fb love and yt live streams :)
Wow it is amazing the sound quality from the cheap adapter to the Lav+ is quite clear, both good but the Lav certainly makes it clearer. Wonder if Robe will come out with a lightning connection mic down the track???
Ya you are right... I’m surprised they haven’t already but I never used that little apple connector for anything else because I do Bluetooth... so I can just leave it on... although I’m sure I can plug it into my camera as well... thanks for the comment and watching Ben
You LEGEND! Thats Danny for the heads up. This will make life so much easier on shoot!
ya glad to help... I watch soooooo many videos to make sure... and then when I had both those things plugged in, it didnt work, I was so mad... but then it worked without the converter and I was happier!!
Bro this video is the truth. Good freaking job. Gotta figure out your SEO so you can grow larger!! :)
Thank you for making it so easy. You answered everything, I plugged it in...and did it exactly like you, “boom boom boom boom”
Responded perfectly. Working. Much love. #Subscribed
Hey thanks so much!!!! Ya man growing on youtube is like a strike of luck now a days!! But thanks for stopping by, I hope this helped
Super informative!!
thanks this was a very useful videos unlike other videos
Great video… This would be GREAT for filming hidden camera skits!!!… Thanks for making this cuz I went thru the same frustrating search for this to work
oh awesome, so happy to help! and ya this would be great for those hidden camera skits lol. thanks for writing
Totally agree mate. Long zoomed in/out shots with perfect audio are so cool. Pitty you need 12 connectors to make a mic work with the iX. 🤣 But I still want one.
Haha not 12!!! That long zoomed shot was so hard to make not being behind the camera I had to guess 3 or 4 times
T H A N K Y O U, I just won this "Rode SC6-L Mobile Interview Kit" and I am finding it very cool. You found a cool workaround for your Lav mic. I do like the new RODE Wireless GO mic and will be buying it a little later to add to my growing film kit. Take care. Cheers
that’s awesome!!!! I’m gonna get the wireless go as soon as I can and make a video on it
I need a Lens case like that for my Iphone 8 Plus. Would make my vlogs alot better. 😂😂
Check out maybe my 10th to last video I made ... ollo clip vs moment. It might help :)
I have a working wireless mic that I plugged into iPhone dongle and no audio was recorded even tho I could hear audio in receiver. Today, I bought the TRRS adaptor and still no luck. Any suggestions? I tried to call Apple and ask when it is needed but could not get answers which is unusual. They are generally very good.
when the mic starts clipping it's because of the distance that you speak or it's just the gain or sensibility it's too high? (i'm thinking of getting one) Good content brother!!
What??? Got to love technology. I hate the dumb adapter for the iPhone but this would be great for interviews if you’re trying to get crisp sound
Sorry, it’s a bit confusing ;) which connector should I buy, so the lav mic would work on my iPhone?
Thank you :)
Yo bro I just bought a sc4 but I have a movo lavalier microphone , will it still work ?
so like is there a wire from the mic to the phone? and do you have to put the audio over the clip from the mic?
great video bro👍🏻
Thanks !!
Nice! More of these!!
More of yours!!!
Awesome I’m going to try this. I’m also going to try the battery wireless too.
That would work great! I should probably make an update to this, I believe this is like 4 years old now. Basically the same rules apply though
Thank you, this is very useful. New subbie
Oh awesome thanks so much :) glad it was helpful... funny how sometimes videos you don’t even think anyone will see will get views lol
Hey bro, would both wired lav mics by rode work your way? The smart lav and the rode lav go
DOPE vid.
Is the quality have different using iphone as a recorder vs other recorder like zoom h1n
do you have any problems with this mic? the sennheiser xsw-d is giving problems on an iphone x, popping noises and cuts out
Sorry for the late reply... I don’t have any problems with it. I use it more with my gopro hero 7 and works great
THANK YOU!! This saved our video shoot
Outstandingly 'detailed' support Vlog, I cannot see how you could produce a better Tech guide for the mic & adaptor.
Thanks pat... it’s funny how I have an idea of what I’m going to make but then I learn all sorts of new tricks and stuff while shooting the vid
That's what the 'Process' is all about, continual learning. kudos once again.
Any video app for shooting video along with lav mic through iPhone?
just the regular iphone camera app works!!!
Is that wireless mic work on android phone too sir?
Thanks! Very helpful
Glad it helped! thanks for the comment!
I saw a side note on this video where you said “I’m still getting better at using a lapel mic because of the video clipping”, you should try using the Moment pro app for audio level structure when recording. This will help prevent your videos from clipping
That’s a great idea Kent. I have that app, it’s really great!
Great review! Question, I do lots of facetime and skype interviews, the guest hears the show on their speakers (iPhone) but if they plug the lav in how can they hear the show, doesn't it cut off the speaker?
yes very true, that does happen, there are 2 options, either they use bluetooth headphones, or you can get wired headphones and use the built in mic off of that.. (thats how ive done it in the past)
Thanks! It worked where the other methods failed.
Oh great Peter!!
Question. I have a iPhone 7 Plus and I see you used the microphone wirelessly.
How can I use this microphone wirelessly while using one device?
Oh so actually it wasn’t wireless in the sense... I had one camera on me and my phone in my pocket with the audio recording the lav and then linked them together
Hey! Thanks a great vid! I am trying to figure out why my Rode smart Lav + expensive Rode SC6-L doesnt work properly actually no voice with adapter at all; my voice is so robotic. I cant figure out why. Any idea?
Oh good question. I have one as well. It seems to work. I did read something about there being an update coming out soon with the iPhone XR
@@DannyBlack I actually have XR. So I tested the SC6-L with headphones and it's not working properly either. I am going to return it. Perhaps just use connector as you suggested in the video.
Ya or check for that firmware update or something. I did notice that the sc6-l only really worked with the app for separating audio... but if it’s just 2 mics to one video source it should work on the video ... double check after you record to unplug it and listen back. It might just be an error in the headphones on the video app
I don't have a IPhone but you helped a lot of people who have!👍
I think there's a setting I'm missing. On the Iphone? Do I switch one over or tell it to automatically pick up on the phone? I have the same plugs you do. I'm using a Boya mic - the 3 stripes there, and the same connector you have.
It should just work automatically. What happens when you play it back after recording ??
Hey mate, bit confused about the start of this video. The Rode Smart Lav+ has TRRS out, and would never need the SR4 cable to work. It's designed not to need it. If you plug the Smart Lav+ into an SR4 you are going TRRS to TRS to try and then put it back through TRRS into the apple cable.
The rest of the info is great, but that bit doesn't make sense.
Ya I agree.. when I made this.. I did all this research to make it work and on other CZcams vids they said I needed all that gear to make it work. Once I wrapped my head on what trs and trrs was it made sense... but I actually thing that you needed it because of some software incompatibility... but after I upgraded my phone it worked . Sorry, long winded way to say... ya you are right it was weird lol
two years later, would this still work man? thanks, and also how do you sync it perfecly is it hard? which software do you use for editing?
2 years later and yup it still works :) So I use Final Cut Pro... however you can use any editing software where you can detach the audio from the video and can move it a few frames. But I will say 2 years later, they have gotten a lot better at latency!
So if you’re doing an interview with your camera on a tripod and the iPhone recording the subjects’s audio…how do you then sync the audio with the video?
Hi fizzah thanks for the question. What I would make sure to do is count to 3 and clap on the camera and near the mic. When you are editing on a computer you line up the sound with the visual or the camera audio clap. That’s the easiest way
I have a PowerDeWise lavalier and trying make it work with my iPhone XR. Its three ring. I plugged it into the apple adapter, and no go. Any suggestions?
Sorry just checking to see if you still have a problem ???
Good vid!!!!
Off topic, but what phone case are you using in this vid? I've been looking for something similar that has a wrist strap like that
This was the moment case. But since then I’ve changed to ollo clip. But for the most part (I’ve done this to 2 other cases) I take a hole punch and make 2 holes to the back of my case toward the bottom and put any strap through it self... best decision ever on a case!!
Just received my new smart today; all over the internet it says you need an SC7 Adaptor however when I unpackaged my lav I noticed it’s already a TRRS connector. Plugged it straight into my ugreen lightning port headphone adaptor on my iPhone XR and it works like a charm! Glad I didn’t buy the $20 SC7 adaptor!
Ya!! Exactly!! It works ! Also funny that most people think it does because when the mic is plugged in you can’t play the footage back and listen because it thinks it’s a headphone lol
Great vid bro. Im buying the rode lavalier+ and i have an iphone11 pro. All i need to buy is the 3.5mm adapter correct?
Yup. Because the smart lav + has the trrs connection already (3 lines) so it will work. Just make sure when you want to listen back to it you have to unplug it, because it thinks headphones are in and the speakers will be off lol
where is Danny Black does it eat alot of battery life from the phone? I wanna ise this mic on my iPhone 11 pro for maybe 5 hours of continuous recording.
Hmmmm the mic doesn’t do much but the video recording and the screen being on might drain the battery. Only other possibility that I haven’t tried is if you have it wirelessly charging at the same time
Does the lav sound better through external recorder like h1 vs recording with iPhone?
They sound the same to me, however with the h1 you would need that trrs to trs adapter. But also the h1 you can adjust the volume of the mic a little easier
Is there a way to adjust the input volume of the lav? Mine seems to clip when I talk somewhat loud
I 100% know what you are saying. I find myself using it more like clipped on my phone somewhere and it sounds good. Very directional. But ya on me you don’t need to be loud to be loud lol. There are movie recording apps that do allow you to adjust
Thank you so much for this! I must know though, what is the background music (the sexy jazz sax at 2:10) you’re using?
i spent like an hour trying to find it in my library! i have no idea what it is lol 🤦♂️
Danny Black no worries, I found it...it’s ‘happy hour’ by nohidea.
This is confusing, will you please clarify what exactly is needed. I currently have a lavalier go and a adapter for my iPhone 11 Pro. What am I missing??
So the lavalier is a trs connection (2 black rings on the plug) iPhone 11 Pro is a trrs connection (3 rings) the rings have to do with stereo out and mic input ...... so you would need a rode trs to trrs adapter (look online, super cheap) so your mic plugs into the adapter and the adapter plugs into the dongle that goes into the iPhones lightning port ... that will work
Got one myself they're amazing! I also went through trying to figure this out kind of felt ripped off that the adaptor didn't come with it
ya but luckily you dont need the adapter... I bought it and then felt ripped off that I actually didnt even need one lol
@@DannyBlack but do you think this is only for iPhone X, or might it also work for an iPhone 7s? I.e. is it a system update, or you'd need a more recent iPhone? Thanks for this great vid!
It should be the same for the 7s as well
Help me please! I have a rode lavalier go connected to iPhone xr with lightning 3.5mm adapter. it is detected as a headphone and when I record a video it continues to use the internal microphone of the mobile phone 🤯
Do you have the trs to trrs adapter? Since the iPhone uses the 3 ring system and wireless go is 2 . That adapter is needed, I think it’s the rode sc4 (off memory)
I got the 3.5 mm lightning headphone jack, the Lavalier GO microphone, plugged it into the phone, a message came up asking if this was headphones or another device, I selected another device. The microphone isn’t getting picked up and I can’t figure out how to change my audio input to the Rose Go.
Hi Cory.. so the Lav Go is a TRS plug... so you will need a TRS to TRRS adapter, Like the Rode SC4 that should help
You can set the audio record levels manually through the Rode Reporter App for iPhone, so you don't risk distorting it.
Cheers!
Ya it’s a great app!!! I found it after this video.! Cheers for the info
Great video, although I do have another question. I have a boya lav mic and it seems I talk too loudly when I have it on, and if there is any external noise like wind then I cap out and the audio sounds terrible. Do you have any tips for this?
Hi, sorry this ended up in the spam folder for some reason... were you able to get the issue sorted out?
@@DannyBlack I worked through some of the tips to clean up the audio but the combination of the wind and me speaking louder was clipping. I don't think its fixable unfortunately.
Nice, you fresh up my mind, syncing in post. Not easy using iPhone apps. As I do or use not much external mic lavalier is it always a big job to get the sync in post audio in place. I use audacity for this together with regular iPhone app. Will you explain how you do it, sync in post by editing I mean.
Ya that would be so tough editing and syncing on an app. If I was to remake this video now I would just highlight the rode wireless go for something like this
Thanks again for watching and commenting :)
@@DannyBlack Since it has inbuild batteries I prefer then the filmmaker kit. My behaviour in fact also too expensive, therefore I'm stuck with long cables or sync in post. As I mentioned earlier, takes hours of my time to get it right. Best from Belgium
So the Lav mics will work when you are recording a video?
Ya. So you can’t listen to it live, so just plug it in and record and then you have to unplug when playing it back to hear it... but ya it does work well
New subscriber brother !
Ah thanks so much nhell!!!
Hi Danny Black, thanks for the video, man! Good call on the adapter! How do I find that iPhone adapter to use with my mic, please?
Is there a difference between a mic adapter and a headphone adapter?
Ya it’s all about those 2 rings or 3 rings. Because the phone jack (even with the dongle) is a mic and headphone jack in 1 you need to make sure that what is plugged into that has 3 rings or “TRRS” so if the mic you are plugging on has 2 rings you need to get an adapter TRS to TRRS
@@DannyBlack Thanks for the advice! Can you give me a link to buy the white mic adapter at 1:26 in the video?
Hi Eddie, That’s just a lighting to 3.5mm dongle from Apple , search for that and you’ll see it quickly :) i recommend getting the Apple one though because some knock off might not give the mic capabilities
@@DannyBlack Thanks man. Will do. Thanks for all your help.
Hey did you make this video in your bathroom or a closet?
Lol are you referring to the room I was in?? Haha ya it was a small room... finally moving to a new house next month and will have office space!!!! :)
Where did you buy your adapter from? Like the 3.5mm adapter for phone
Here in Australia I bought it at digidirect but you can find them at amazon or any website of an electronic store or even rode’ s website
Is the signal recorded to your iPhone mono to BOTH channels, or mono to just the LEFT channel?
I thought it was stereo coming in.. but if it is mono it would be both channels
@@DannyBlack Thanks. It appears to be mono to both channels in your video, but I wasn't sure if you had to split channels and pan the LEFT to center to accomplish that.
How do you record yourself and the audio do you use a app?
I used just the voice memo app to record my voice if I just want my voice other wise it woks with the camera app
Do you know anything about TRRS splitters? I'd like to be able to plug two lavelier mics into my iPhone 12. I have two trss lavs but the splitter I got doesn't work, so I got the adapter you speak of to go between the lighting adapter and splitter and then to the two mics. This is important because of physical distancing I don't want my interview guests to feel like we are sitting too close to one mic just to get good sound. (We wear masks)
oh hmmmm interesting, im not sure exactly but it might be something that can work, you might just need to play around with it. One thing I would suggest though, is if you can just record the 2nd mic on a different device, like a phone or something... and when its all recording just give a CLAP for reference to sync up later... that will be a way easier option!
Is there an app that lets you record video while recording the audio from the LAV mic? So it's sync'd automatically in one video file?
Sorry for the late reply. I’m not sure if there is such an app.. but as long as you record the full length instead of cuts it will be easy to line up. I think there is some software that might make it work, however the rode wireless go works well too
That was only in reference to, when I recorded from far away using a different camera. The audio will sync with your phone video, no need to edit it later
Hey bro, thanks for the video. I have an 6T Plus phone operating android and want to record video with the phone and use a lapel mic. Will a label mic that is plugged straight into the phone automatically use the lapel for the audio when I record?
Hey Ewan. I’m not quite familiar with the 6t specs... I believe as long as you have a dongle that gives it a headphone jack that is TRRS (so a mic would connect) it should work
Thanks for your reply. I received the mic yesterday and doesn't seem to work with the cables I've got, including a TRRS I believe. The directions say it might not work with some specs and s new video app may need installed....any recommendations? Thanks for your help 👊🏼😎
Hi, I am hard of hearing and struggle with sound when using facetime/whatsapp video calling with family. Would this work as a microphone for the people i'm calling and help solve this issue? Seems like it would be a cheap solution to allow me to hear friends and family again. Thanks
hi xx... I think what might help better is if you used headphones with a mic built in (like the earbuds that used to come with the phone) that would over all be the better option, or using blue tooth wireless headphones.
Also thank you!
You said "I can walk away and with editing still hear myself etc" So you are using two phones, one for video the other for audio. What are you using to align the audio back to the video? Sill question but I'm a rookie here with two LAVs and one iphone x
Haha it’s okay to be a rookie. So I was actually filming with a bigger camera and using the lav with the iPhone in my pocket. And in my editing program (Final Cut Pro is what I use) I align the 2 sources but then mute the big camera audio . So for something like that you could use either an older iPhone ... or any type of recorder like a zoom h1 or something
@@DannyBlack Thanks Danny, I really appreciate your feedback.
This is a great tennis court!!
Lol ya... you wanna play!????
where is danny black sure! Always up for playing tennis! Was a nice video to watch. Like the way you explain things ;)
Anyone know if you can use a mic splitter on it for two mics?
how do you get the audio from one phone to match with the video from your other phone
In editing.. I had the 2 audio sources and matched them up ... some editing apps will match them for you
How to check while recording that the lav is still recording?
I am not clear on what converter/piece I need to make this au-100 work with my iPhone 10xr?? Please help!!
At the end of the cord.. on the 1/8” jack how many black lines are there .. 2 or 3 are the options
I think it’s 3 lines.. which means you just need to iphone dongle that comes with it (I think) it’s lightning to headphone jack
so I got the rod smart lav and put it in the white thingy to my iPhone x and it still isn't working! is there some sort of special setting I need to put into my iPhone?
I’ve heard of this happening before and I think it could be a bad dongle ... (that’s a possibility) the other thing is that when you plug it in and record, make sure you pull it out when you want to play it back, because when it’s plugged in the audio won’t come out
thanks for the quick reply! You were right...I didn't take it out before listening to it and it works now. Ugh....Glad it was a simple fix though. Thanks again! You are awesome and you just lowered my blood pressure lmao!
Hahah so glad I can help. I did the same thing at first too :)
I've got a Power DeWise lav mic that I use in multiple ways. Sometimes with a gopro and chesty, the mic sits on my chest and sounds great. I also use it with my iPhone in a quiet room, clipped to my collar it BOOMS. Does anyone know if you can edit recording levels on an iPhone? Or does it just sound like a placement issue?
on the iPhone you cant edit the levels, but you could in editing software such as iMovie or FCPX I think it might just be a placement issue, my smart lav+ I usually have it clipped on the phone and it picks me up perfectly (thanks for the comment, and hope you can get it all resolved)
@@DannyBlack it’s loud enough clipped to my collar that it’s an over modulation issue. Just dropping the level in post production doesn’t fix the issue. I think it’s entirely a placement problem. Thanks.
can u use this for video calls and facetime
Absolutely !! :)
At Min 3:18 it sounded like you were going to rap lol ;)
Hahah ya!!!!
Had the same problem dan with my iPhone 8 + when I brought my rode mic mini, its so frustrating
Ya it was so frustrating.. my Shure mv88 was awesome but would only work for 10 seconds and stop ... and realized that when I hit record and then plug the mic in, it would work... but since that latest update it works perfect... so hopefully it stays that way (thanks for the commment )
I got this same set up with my new mic but can hear nothing. What am i doing wrong?
Biggest common mistake is when you are trying to listen back you need to take the mic out because it mutes the speakers ... if that doesn’t work we can try some other ideas 💡👍
Just bought that same mic but it doesn't work on my Iphone 8. And yes, I have unplugged it to see if I hear the recording and nothing. I think some of the dongles must not be compatible with mics but only headsets (the earbuds work). That was the 2nd mic I ordered and now not sure if I should order a wireless mic or try ordering a new dongle. Frustrating!!
i just have to ask to make sure... when you plug from the mic to the phone (dongle) there are 2 black rings (on the 3.5mm jack) going into the mic and 3 black rings going into the phone(dongle)?
how to you control the gain that comes to your phone?
mine is too loud.
Oooooo that’s a good question . I’ve never had an issue with it . But there is an app (maybe a free one out there) but a paid one called movie pro where you can turn the audio down
How d i connect it without a cable?
i bought the cord for the iphone but my lav still does not work and i can see it is picking up my voice but reviewing the recording you can hear that it is cutting in and out can you help? is there a setting on the phone you need to tweak
Just double checking.. how many black rings does the lav mic have on the 3.5 mm connector?
@@DannyBlack there are three on the phone plug and two on my camera plug i have a picture but do not know how to share it here.
Send me an email techishardmedia@gmail.com
Now I'm confused...... so you said it does not work, and after you said it does work?
