This isn't really a film about a no strings attached relationship, rather just a couple having a dramatically exaggerated path to the "let's be exclusive" stage.
Both fall for each other but one is the AvPD and will flee from their feelings since they're afraid of having losing control of it and the other one it's the anxiously attached and a hard-core pursuer of who's running away. It indeed ends so badly

Scenes like this make me initially very happy then it turns almost immediately and I'm incredibly sad. I know I will never feel this again, experience it for myself. My wife passed due to Cancer a few years ago and I've been an emotional rollercoaster ever since. The one constant is that I never content with my life any longer and long term happiness will never be mine again. I guess I have one thing left to look forward to one day.
