  • If your vehicle's brake lights won't turn off, there's a good chance the brake pedal stop pad is either missing or damaged. Here's how I fixed it.
Note: I am not a mechanic so if I describe something that is not industry accurate, I apologize. I'm just an Average Joe that had an auto problem that I found to be pretty easy to fix without paying someone.

Thank you for your video! This was the only resource that correctly identified my problem. I was so close to ordering a new brake light switch ($50) when I watched your video and remembered seeing the same little green plastic shards in my car. I ordered a new pack of brake light switch pads from amazon for about $7 and fixed the brake light issue!
When you're doing this, you'll need to have your key in the ignition otherwise the brakes will lock up and it's almost impossible to push the brake pedal down far enough to install the new pad. After putting the keys in I was able to install the new pad by myself with not much difficulty. All-in-all one of the easiest car repairs I've ever had to do!
Thanks again for your video--you gave me the missing piece of the puzzle I was looking for!

Bravo Chris! Other websites had me trying the hard way first…checking relays and grounding points and look for water intrusion! So much work! Your description of the telltale green pieces was KEY in your video! My pieces were hidden behind my new floor mats!
    Problem solved! Kudos!!!

Thanks to you guys who take the time to video these problems and the fix. This happens to most cars when they get old and the plastic becomes brittle. It happened on my Tundra today....and I knew what it was from the same thing happening to my old Nissan years ago. The Nissan dealer wanted $20 for the factory part---shameful for a dime size plastic part to charge that much. I took a penny and taped it in place of the grommet and it did the same thing. Thanks

Thank you for the video, I would have no idea how to fix it and would probably end up spending $200, instead I paid $9.99

Chris, my brake light wont come on - could that have been you problem?
    - parking lights are on all the time, Had to remove the fuse for that.
I have the same little green pieces on my floor mat. Im thinking the prob. may be the same.

It definitely sounds like those pieces are from the bumper. But that should cause your brake lights to stay on, not stay off.
