Guest bio: Imam Omar Suleiman is the Founder and President of the Yaqeen Institute for Islamic Research and a professor of Islamic Studies at Southern Methodist University.
As an orthodox Christian, I have so much respect for followers of Islam and their devotion to the word of God.
I read this and I said “wow how foreign respect has become, that something so simple has made my day”
And as a Muslim you have my utmost respect ❤️
But Lex will never have on an Orthodox Jew. He had on Orthodox Muslims, Orthodox and Catholic Christians, but had on only one Jewish rabbi, a reform rabbi, not Orthodox.
@@Bittzen he is embarrassed. 70 percent of jews. 61 percent of christians are secular. how could he explain kapporet [twirling a live chicken overhead in order to transfer your sins to the chicken ]
@@Bittzen there no such thing as orthodox islam, their only islam and sunni and shia are more of political split not different both shia and sunni muslim pray and fast and read quran but different they believe ali prophat mohammed relative and son in law should have become the first caliph after prophat mohammed death but others believed that it should be by election among companions so they choose abu bakr who been with prophat mohammed since beginning of his dawah journey.

@@eahannan I'm a young person from Kerala, India. 28 years old. Currently working as a software engineer at a multi-national company. Raised by a single mother with conservative values. During my college days, I started questioning religions from all aspects. Then I began to follow socialism and other modern ideologies. But not for too long. I started to realize I don't want to live that way because it wasn't compatible with my core values. And all I wanted was to lead a simple normal life with my family which holds my traditional and cultural values. And I was only able to find my inner peace that way. So I reverted! But I follow all sorts of religious or political figures who don't conflict too much with my belief. Such as Jordan Peterson for example.
By the way, I'm not that intellectual or anything. I think the real reason I reverted is that I was raised a Muslim and Islam is my comfort. Sorry if I offended my fellow Muslims with my stupid story😅!
@@rameessahlu very similar to my story. I'm from Pakistan btw. There's nothing stupid about your story at all, I pray that we remain steadfast in our faith because it ultimately produces positivity both mentally and physically, should you pursue it the way the Prophet (S) did.
I really did try to look into other faiths. Outside of monotheistic ones, it just didn't make sense to me at all. And I chose Islam because it combines the beauty of both Christianity and Judaism and offers a much better preserved history of the life of its central figure and a final solution through its Holy Book (which again holds its own claim of perfect preservation).

as a Muslim, I need to listen to this every now and then to remind myself to be calm and not in a rush in doing Shalat, to enjoy the moment, and to romanticize it when worshipping God. and also I still have to study more about it to understand the meaning of the words said during the prayers so that I can really immerse myself in the prayers deep down inside

Islam is a supremacist religion. It kind of waging war towards people of indifferent opinion

As a Christian Catholic I love Muslims and I have the most respect for Islam. I view it like we are cousins. We may all pray differently but remember we are all praying to the same God whether you call him God Yahweh or Allah. I’ve become very interested in the Islamic faith and religion as well as how strong they are. Muslims are good strong kind hearted people that believe in traditional values
The name is not what matters ... It's the concept of God.
Christianity and Islam don't have the same God.
For example, the Christian god has a son, in fact, sons.

As a Muslim it feels so liberating to have our religion understood and taken as a godly path and a life for god and not misconstrued as violent or foreign concept for Islam accepts you regardless of your heritage or language.
you are welcome liberated moslem here in the west. thats called liberalism, a superior ideology to islam, that is why you are feeling so good. if you were in the moslem world you would nt have that feeling. no liberlaism there, just oppressive islam. heck in large parts of the moslem world, praying too much can land you in jail as the secret police keeps an eye on all mullah types. so its nice to see someone adopt liberlaism the opposite of islam and feel good. you are welcome.
@@AsifKhan-hf9zy I am Muslim and there is no oppression in my religion, I bear witness there is no deity but Allah and that Muhammad (peace be upon him) is his servant and prophet. There is around 2 billion Muslims worldwide, how can they all be oppressed and still follow it? Not only that but Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world. What about the people oppressing Muslims why not talk about them, china and their reeducation camps, India’s hatred for Muslims and their constant attack on them, France and it’s repressive laws that don’t let Muslims practice their faith freely, and let’s not forget American Islamophobia they bombed the Middle East for years for the sake of oil the entire world knows that. I watched Imam Omar Suleiman in an open forum with a Christian and a Jew discussing/debating their respective religions. Although I am a Christian there was no doubt the Imam “won” the debate hands down. He speaks with the strongest sense of confidence, conviction, compassion and empathy. The layout of the prayers actually reflects the original human waking cycle. Our ancestors slept shortly after sunset, awoke roughly in the middle of night for a few hours of productivity and then slept again till dawn to resume the activities of the day.

BEAUTIFUL VIDEO AND AMAZING EXPLANATION.
I like that you get grounded and removed from daily stuff. It's like a reset button 5 times a day. Probably how it feels to just go outside and take a walk or take a shower.
I've been searching for God with an open mind and heart. I found that "prayer" is like a talk to God through which you can show your appreciation of God and his greatness. It teaches your mind to focus on the positive sides of life and God itself. You can also ask for things you actually missing, for example like patience and so on.
makes sense, that explains why the allah wanted the moslems to pray FIFTY TIMES A DAY. accordiing to moslem sources, when mohamed met allah, he ordained that the followers of mohamed should pray 50 times a day ====== that would be roughly EIGHT HOURS A DAY of "your mind to focus on the positive sides of life and God itself" ====== you can imagine they already barely work in the moslem world, and with 50 prayers a day ======= the ones who do bother to get an 8 hour shift in, would have to cut that by another 50% ===== basically what the allah envisioned was a world where 1) moslems spent eight hours EVERY DAY bowing down and worshipping him 2) non-moslems coming in and extracting all the oil and natural resources in the moslem world during the same EIGHT HOURS and 3) paying the moslems in exchange for the oil and 4) the moslems than being able to buy food and clothing from non-moslems with the money 5) since there would not be any time left over for the moslems in the day to manufacture and find time to grow their own.

because its wholesome TO YOU! to others its, just brainless head butting of the ground ....... reciting the same old prayers in some archaic language, no intellect involved, no science, no medicine, nothing ........ just wasting several hours in the day, head butting the ground to a God, that does nt treat you any different whether you bray or you dont bray ....... everybody gets TREATED THE SAME by God, whether they are head butters or they are filthy mushriks, their lives ALL get the same breaks and the same bad luck ...... the more they work, the more likely they earn more, the less they work, they all get the same freebies from God, whether they are wasting their time smoking pot, or wasting their time head butting the ground five times a day ........
you see? now if braying 5 times a day, resulted in less earthquakes, less poverty, less infighting, less wars, less dictators, better medical outcomes, than your "wholesome video" would have a point. it WOULD TRULY BE WHOLESOME!!!! like a video on eating healthy foods for instance, or brushing your teeth!! ====== but based on real world evidence, braying acheives nothing more than yoga or meditation or anything else invented by non-believing kafirs ======= is same, God does nt do anything more for you then he does for anyone else if you bray or you don't ========

I normally have a very deep seated mistrust of Muslim people, that said, I must admit that this man does seem to have an inner peace and happiness that radiates from him. Its very similar to the calm you see that comes from men of Christ. Take from that what you will.
I don't blame you for feeling any sort of way the media and certain people portray Islam to be bad. but in actual fact it's the opposite. It's what you make of it and I invite you to learn more about Islam. The Quran tells you to seek more knowledge before making decisions and challenges it's readers to criticize it. To also prove it to be wrong which I think benefits those that read it in a good way. Anyway may the Almighty bless you and family have a good day ahead bro!
i was where you were at, and then i converted after traveling to the middle east and seeing the real truth of islam. as with all religions, there is a corruption from man that causes the distaste. but the real message itself is where you'll find god. and at the end of the day, jews, christians and muslims worship the same god. it's the same religion based on abraham, but its been corrupted through the thousands of years.
Jesus Christ also worshipped God Almighty by prostrating to Him and glorifying Him. May be that's why.
Your view of Muslims has been shaped by the media, the entertainment industry and Western governments. Go down to your local Mosque and speak to the Imam or other clergy or even your Average Jamal (joke) on the street, you'll begin to understand how the way Muslims are portrayed is very different to how we actually are. We are a generous people devoted to our faith and the oneness of God/Tawhid and the reverence and love of our Prophet PBUH.
We Muslimeen believe Isa (“Jesus”) عليه السلام is a great Messenger of ALLAH . Isa (“Jesus”) عليه السلام never told people to worship him. He worshipped only ALLAH. Isa (“Jesus”) عليه السلام is a great human. A human eats food and drinks water.
ALLAH CREATED us. ALLAH Doesn’t need anything. ALLAH doesn’t need anyone. We should worship ALLAH Alone. Do read the Qur’an

lex u r awesome!!!
Merci monsieur Lex Friedman. Belle interview. J'ai appris une sagesses très profonde grâce à ce frère musulman : lors de la prosternation la tête est en dessous du cœur.
I love the respect shown in the conversation. Any Muslims can you help me understand why is the night prayer more impact full? I understand that everything is quiet and serene....is that the mean reason?
Tahajjud prayer is that it gives inner strength and mental peace. It also has the capability to avert acts of sin and wickedness. Also, according to the Islamic tradition, the third part of the night is the best time to make wishes/duas.
Prophet (PBUH) said: “During the night there is a time when the Muslim does not ask for the good of this world and the Hereafter but it will be given to him, and that happens every night.”
It's the seclusion and the peace and serenity, and in addition to that the sincerity some people pray just to look devout but in the night while everyone is sleeping no eyes are on you that is more proof that your doing it in a sincere manner, also most people are asleep and the value of a good act is so much greater when you do it even though no one else does it's like you're outcompeting everyone else in devotion to Allah and he likes that.
and I guess also because it's difficult because prayer is not about quantity it's about quality if you wake up in the middle of the night while tired and still bear with it just for the sake of allah and nothing else that speaks volumes and of course increases you in reward.
Id rather have my hand or leg cut off than stop praying 5x a day.
Prayer gives believers PEACE and TRANQUILITY.
why do you pray only 5x, allah did not want you to pray 5x, he wanted you to pray 50x a day. but you are a hypocrite and make smart ass comments on here, while cheating allah ===== its only that moses knows more about human nature than allah itself. and he told mohammad to go beg allah to reduce the prayer, because two faced hypocrite believers like yourself (who love the daily prayer) will not pray 50 times a day. too much "PEACE and TRANQUILITY" ........ ask allah to cut it down mohammad .......lol, moslem hypocrite.....
To non-muslims, one thing to understand about Islam is that it is all about praising the God, creator and orchestrator of the universe, and reminding to yourself that you are only a servant to God and nothing more. You are trying to stay humble and not be top proud as if you yourself are somewhat of a deity
I guess the other central thing to Islam is that we believe there is an afterworld/ hereafter where all people who die will be resurrected in a different, eternal world where you will go to heaven first or hell first and then heaven, depending on your sins or good deeds. Muslims believe that this Earth is a mere test and not the real world. All the glories, the losses, they simply do not matter. What matters is how well did you serve God in this world. Did you do good deeds and help people in need, make beneficial inventions, philantropy? Or did you only take and take and never give, just for your own pleasures? This is what matters in Islam.
not servant of God, slave of God. islam is a religion of slavery, not of freedom. so please keep that in mind when you consider becoming moslem. if you like being a free person, not for you. if you like being a slave to a master, 100% for you.........
@@AsifKhan-hf9zy wouldn't any rational being be a salve to the omniscient instead of being a slave to personal desires and hedonism...
not to mention that your interpretation of "freedom" is contradictory at its core as not a single world view or political stance exists that allows you to be unrestricted in all things, which goes back to the statement of "its better to be a slave to the omniscient (objective limitations) than to personal desires (subjective limitations).
its a well recognized idea in psychology that the mind will always have a governing view, again your choice wether you prefer a subjective view or an objective view...
Prayer does play a big part in improving sleep and ,for lack of scientific term, inner peace. IT SURE DOES.
May Allah teach me to smile while talking so that people can get benefit and good effect from me!

When the Arabs pre-Islam would see the Ancient Greek temples they were in awe and understood the importance of praying to the spiritual. Islam has come a long way

Hope you will respond to this
Beautiful
I see more comments about people talking about the comments than the actual comments they're talking about.
guys im muslim, believe me the prayers when you hear you must pray 5 times you understand that is obligation but the truth that when we pray, we feel calm we feel confident and have faith in a greater force that control our life and nothing happens without its permission and also thats what helps us to go through the difficulties in life by keeping us positive and strong, i really suggest guys that you at least read the quran or watch about islam or read the life or the prophet mohamed peace be upon him
love you
People were on the correct path, they all were monotheists, i.e. worshipping none but the Creator. But they deviated, invented new ideas into the religion, worshipped others, distorted the religion. So God sent messengers to guide people back to the straight path.
God said: And I did not create the jinns and humans except to worship Me. Quran 51:56 And He, the most high, said: And We certainly sent into every nation a messenger, [saying], "Worship God and avoid Taghut (Taghut: Anything worshipped other than God.)" Quran 16:36.
All kinds of worship must be for God alone. So, asking Jesus, Muhammad or “saints” for help is polytheism.
