The hymn-like part of this piece actually is considered an unofficial second national anthem in Finland.
The choir isn't in the original piece, though; Sibelius wrote it for orchestra only, and it's still usually performed without the choir. The lyrics were written 40 years later, and the choir simply follows the string parts. Sibelius was against choral arrangements of the piece for decades, but eventually changed his mind and approved these lyrics when a conductor asked for permission to add them.

    • @chefren77
      @chefren77 Před rokem +12

Maamme isn't actually official either, there is no law that defines a national anthem. It has just become the national anthem by popular adaptation, which at least in my mind is an even stronger endorsement.
For reference, the gorgeous Finlandia Hymn can be heard here: czcams.com/video/9PBGPdYAG0c/video.html

@@chefren77 They use maamme laulu in world championships etc. so at least that is why it is therefore considered the official national song. • @coolsenjoyer
      @coolsenjoyer Před 9 měsíci +2

@@SorbusAucubaria It's used in far more official occasions than just sports and it still doesn't make it the official national anthem, just the de facto one. Hi there! This piece by Jean Sibelius was composed during the time that Finland was a Grand Duchy of the Russian Empire directly under the control of the Russian Czars, from 1808 until the Russian revolution when the Bolsheviks took over.
The music had a 'secret' message to the Finlanders. In the beginning, the very dark and ominous music depicts the mounting oppression of the Russian rule, the 'russification' and Finland being unfree like a serf or slave. Then the music depicts the awakening of resistance and of a national spirit among the Finnish people. After that, the music interprets the turmoil and uprising, at least in spirit, of the people and their longing and hope to be free, their dream of freedom and of finally being a sovereign, independent state. This last and most moving part of the song describes this longing for freedom and the love that the Finnish people have for their own, precious and beautiful country.
This 'message' in its entirety was understood by the Finns, but was disguised as depicting a dark and stormy night and the break of dawn that followed.
Originally, the work had no lyrics. They were later created first in Finnish and then in Swedish, our two official languages.
By the way, the Finlandia is not our national anthem, but many people think that it should be. It's such a powerful piece.
It appears that the melody has been 'hijacked' by various groups in other countries. Some have used it as a psalm in church, some as their national anthem, and even some questionable groups as their group song.
Our national anthem is called "Vårt Land" in Swedish (Our land) and "Maamme" in Finnish. The words are from a poem in Swedish by our national poet Johan Ludvig Runeberg, a Swedish-speaking Finlander, just as Jean Sibelius.

    • @AndyFlagg1

yea vi alla pratar Svenska om den nöden uppenbarar sig. Sibelius is a Finn and inspired by his Fatherland. Sweden is our Brother, a sibling who destroyed temples and culture of magnificient civilization just by the orders of the Pope and lutheran christian bloody 300 years schooling. Perusing the National Archive texts shows this cruel fact. BUT let it be, we have a genetic memory, listening to firs hum sparkles things which the celebrated ones understand. Remembering the suffering belongs to it, but doesn't collide with the enlightment. Finlandia is us. I love the Swdish Anthem with its pompous royal glory. It's one in three greatest; Finnish, German and Swedish ones. Only God Save the Queen comes close. German Anthem's lyrics are seriously sublime, listen to them some time. Love y'all.

A rare occasion to hear the version with added choir this time, and it does add to the piece, although the original did not need any "help" for it to become one of the most identifiable tunes in, from and about Finland! The way that main melody works itself through the orchestral textures to finally emerge in full glory gives me chills every time; I can only imagine what it is to be a Finn and hear this, especially Live!
Only Smetana's "Vltava" from his unique "Ma Vlast" cycle probably stirs this level of national identification and pride, while also being recognizable worldwide.

Finlandia is a lot harder to sing than Maamme, which is the national anthem of Finland, and it's just nice to hear national anthems sung by everyone at different occasions. nevertheless Finlandia is definitely the better piece of music, which is why the short-lived African state of Biafra chose it as its national anthem, with different words of course. supposedly because the president was a fan of Sibelius. there are also quite a lot of different Christian hymns sung in churches that use the composition from Finlandia with different words.
my grandmother was always proud to have seen Sibelius walking on the street in his later years and he was definitely a celebrity, although back then celebrity was different. I've also visited Ainola in Järvenpää as a kid with my other grandmother and it's certainly a peaceful place, so it's no wonder that Sibelius and his wife chose to be buried there.

I decided anyway start to listen to it..
Then.. I realized, that Finlandia was meant to me EXCACTLY for this morning 30.11. 2023.
This is actually a historical morning, because first time after the wartime, when our parents and grandparents fought agains Russia, we have been forced to close Finland's eastern border totally.
This decision was made due to Russia's bulling and mind-games during last weeks and days.
When listening to Finlandia I just totally realized the historical moment.
Once again I saw the beautiful nature of Finland in my mind and I felt the changing motions, which also earlier generations in Finland have been going through when living during "the years of danger" and through war time.

A year ago, the oldest choir in Finland stood outside the russian embassy and sang Finlandia and everywhere the lyrics said "Finland", they substituted " Ukraine". The cry for freedom will go on, even in the darkest times. You, as a blackman, should know that. Never surrender.

Finland, behold, thy daylight now is dawning,
the threat of night has now been driven away.
The skylark calls across the light of morning,
the blue of heaven lets it have its way,
and now the day the powers of night is scorning:
thy daylight dawns, O Finland of ours!
Finland, arise, and raise towards the highest
thy head now crowned with mighty memory.
Finland, arise, for to the world thou criest
that thou hast thrown off thy slavery,
beneath oppression´s yoke thou never liest.
Thy morning´s come, O Finland of ours!
(This translation of Koskenniemi´s text is by Keith Bosley.)

Want moore goose bumps? Listen this : Sibelius: Symphony No. 5 - III. Allegro molto - London Philharmonic Orchestra. It's late winter, shoveling snow, then the swans arrive in the North, they bring spring with them. Sibelius loves nature and birds, especially swans

May I recommend a project for your channel? I think it could be cool to have one day of the week focused on Beethoven sonatas and you listen to them in order from 1 to 32. I noticed on some of your previous videos that you felt sonatas were harder to approach and the Beethoven sonatas really are a staple of all classical music that came after (a famous pianist once called them the New Testament, with Bachs well tempered klavier as the Old Testament). Just an idea!

Well, many people considered choosing this as a national anthem, but many others felt that iit's a bit too complicated, so they picked Maamme laulu instead.

  • @k85

The reason some of Sibelius' pieces like this or few others (e.g. Karelia, Intermezzo) are NOT in the role of Finnish national anthem is purely so as to not embarrass the rest of the world, because nothing compares. There's just nothing else to it. It isn't polite to humiliate everyone into bitter envy. So the prudent choice is a mild piece of music like the one we do have.
    😀

    Lyrics of Finlandia.
This is my song, O God of all the nations,
A song of peace for lands afar and mine.
This is my home, the country where my heart is,
Here are my hopes, my dreams, my holy shrine.
But other hearts in other lands are beating,
With hopes and dreams as true and high as mine.
My country's skies are bluer than the ocean,
And sunlight beams on clover leaf and pine.
But other lands have sunlight too, and clover,
And skies are everywhere as blue as mine.
O hear my song, thou God of all the nations,
A song of peace for their land and for mine.
My country's skies are bluer than the ocean,
And sunlight beams on clover leaf and pine.
But other lands have sunlight too, and clover,
And skies are everywhere as blue as mine.
O hear my song, thou God of all the nations,
A song of peace for their land and for mine.

You are doing a great job reacting to this music. And I would like to make a suggestion, maybe two.
    1) Barber violin concerto
    2) Ravel Tzigane
    3) Brahms violin concerto
4)Anything by Debussy (I suggest La Mer)
I really love those pieces and I would like to know what you think ( at least of one between them)

If you study the history of why it ain't then changing it now would be to disrespect their choice, the ones that kept our country free. Like they didn't have computers back then when it started to spread and it was a song most knew, plus that its more neutral so Finlandia wouldn't fit in every occasion. Yes Finlandia is perfect for our independence day because its a day of remembering.
This is not a question about if a woman is a man or if a man is a woman, this is our fore fathers that chose this and the least we should do for the freedom we have today is respect their choices. Can't find music like this today so maybe they knew a thing or two more than us also. I get angry when I read that people are so ignorant that they aren't even able to respect the generations before us enough to stay true to the country they made for us, like they had to suffer through times we never have even seen or experienced so if maamme was their choice then it should stay as that. Maybe its not always about you! Like should we change the flag also because its not as good looking as it could be?!?
Yes everyone is allowed an opinion but today's youth acts before they think and stop this changing everything just because the grass seems greener on the other side of the fence.
Edit: This was a response to the comments I read every time I watch a video with this song and not your reaction. Like it would not fit in if it was played when we win a gold medal, it would be wrong to play it then.
