    Good tip. I suspect that vibration is also reduced adding to a cleaner cut. Loved the board flip at the end.

    I knew a few woodworkers who came across this issue some years back; they used jb weld and sanded it smooth with a strip of flexible sandpaper while the saw was running (kind of like how you polish something on a lathe). No blade, obviously.
    Great to see you making videos again btw!

    Thanks so much. For the longest time I thought I had a defective dado set. The chippers were either had a defective teeth or a not perfectly rounded arbor hole. One thing I noticed is that it always takes place in the first chipper which led me to your video. Mystery solved. Thanks so much.

    I bought a Freud SBOX8: 8" Box Joint Cutter Set sometime back and it probably had given me the step in the cut on the left side of about .003 so I was going to make a jewelry box and use my new Incra to make it and noticed this step in the cut. I saw your youtube video and put the super glue on my Sears contractor table saw arbor shaft but instead of shaving off the excess CA I just forced the arbor nut to shove the two blades over and tested it and it cut perfectly.

    That works great for a small dado but It doesn’t look like it would work if you wanted a 3/4” dado. You would need to put ca glue on on quite a few threads, making it difficult for a perfect center, even if can just pick out spots. It also seems too tedious for larger dados. I could be wrong so please let me know. Thanks

    My dado stack came with spacers and the instructions said to always use a spacer after the blade before any chipper inserts. Never knew why it said to do that, but I guess this is why. No glue needed, just follow the instructions. 🤷‍♂

      @@Craftswright what keeps the other blades from sagging on the threaded section? Also you could wrap the small section with a piece of tape or equivalent.

    • @Craftswright
      @Craftswright  Před rokem +1

      Good question! The “peaks” of the other threads are much closer together, not allowing a blade to sink down into the “valleys” between. But that very first valley? Oh brother it’s a big’un!

  • @rayalires39

    Mine seems to cut the edges deeper than the middle.

  • @billparrish4385
    @billparrish4385 Před rokem +4

    Why is the gap there in the first place? It doesn't look like wear, it looks machined, but I can think of no reason to machine something that deep, after the shoulder and before starting to cut the threads. Other than to intentionally mess up a dado stack? Only partially joking, since they're illegal in some countries as an unsafe table saw accessory?

    • @billparrish4385
      @billparrish4385 Před rokem

      Oh, and by the way, great hack! AND great info! I was just about to use mine on an old Craftsman contractor saw for the first time, so I'll know to look for this.

    • @Kineth1
      @Kineth1 Před rokem +7

      If it is turned on a manual lathe... I often see machinists on CZcams cut a ring into the base of a threaded section because it takes multiple cuts to fully cut a thread, and when they disengage the movement for the thread cutting tool, the part keeps spinning, with the tip of the tool right in that groove.

    • @billparrish4385
      @billparrish4385 Před rokem +4

      @@Kineth1 Oh, like a relief groove to give the cutter someplace to not be bottomed out, not still engaged with the piece, so that it's not touching on that end of the shallower thread cut? Yeah, that does make sense. Probably is the reason. Forget my conspiracy theory about messing up dado stacks.... 😎

    • @evanbarnes9984
      @evanbarnes9984 Před rokem +5

      @@billparrish4385 that's exactly what it is! It indicates that these arbors are single point threaded on a lathe. You have to provide clearance for the tool. Plus, that rounded groove prevents stress risers at the point where the shoulder meets the thread. Blondihacks has excellent videos on single point threading if you want to see how it works in more detail! Plus her videos are awesome. In general, it's a good practice to look for a mechanistic explanation for something like this before assuming a malignant conspiracy. I think if more people practice that skill the world would be better.

    • @billparrish4385
      @billparrish4385 Před rokem +4

      @@evanbarnes9984 The world would indeed be a better place if that practice were followed. And, at the risk of loading yet another life lesson into that 1/16th inch groove, my hypothesis came about from an ignorance of the finer points of machining threads into a shaft, plus a factoid I'd heard about some places outlawing stacked blades as being too dangerous. That difference in 'knowledge sets' between people can often be found at the bottom of many conspiracy theories. We live in such a robust information age, we often (somewhat arrogantly) think we already have a pretty good handle on most relevant facts, and then are surprised when we learn about a relief cut aiding in machining threads, and realize those hoofbeats we heard were in fact just a horse, and not a zebra at all. Sometimes a little humility in recognition of everything we don't know can be useful. 😎
      Cheers, and thanks for your observation!
