    The guys from the CSN FSB, who actually come to search houses in the mountain villages of the Caucasus, prefer steel and titanium. Until now, Altyns and Tig are passed on as samurai swords of a warrior setting off on a mission. There is a certain distrust of modern "plastic" helmets and ceramics, at least among those fighters who have been shot by AK. In addition, the Defender's groin is sometimes also reinforced with a steel plate, which soldiers purchase separately.

      Titanium is not "obsolete" as an armor material by any means, in fact it has some advantages, look into ulbrichts helmets, they still make modern titanium helmets for elite German unit like SEK. The russian Altyn was actually copied from a Swedish design I believe. But yes they are obsolete now. And in any case many "modern" russian helmets are weak knockoffs of ops core that are typically gost 1 or gost 2 in which case the altyn may actually be better or at least offer a face shield.

      To be fair, the IOTV is only 36 pounds if fully equipped with the additional armor. With just the vest, front and back plates, it's much less.

    This isn't spalling, this is splash. Spalling is fragments of the armor itself coming off the back face. Either way, I have thought about this problem and I think a decent solution would be to take some hardfacing welding rod compatible with w/e manganese steel alloy that is used (in the case of AR500 and similar) and laying a bead around the edge of the strike face, making a lip that would theoretically deflect splash away from the wearer. I doubt it would be measurably detrimental to the plate. It's something I'd like to try out.

    How would a defender with ceramic instead of steel plates fare against multiple shots? As a large anti-terrorism/military police vest, I would assume it was expected to go up against repeated pistol and assault rifle rounds instead of the larger rifle rounds. The spalling on the 5.56 rounds wasn't bad and only happened after a few rounds. Would a ceramic plate hold up to several rounds as well?
    These are just assumptions though, I have very little knowledge of modern armour. I only specialize in historical late medieval armour.

    • @Oxide_does_his_best
      @Oxide_does_his_best  Před 3 lety +49

      The 556 spall was bad, there shouldn't be any spall at all. If that stuff is digging into your skin you notice. The redut I've seen has a different plate bag that uses a single monolithic ceramic plate.

    • @joost1120
      @joost1120 Před 3 lety +12

      @@Oxide_does_his_best I didn't notice any spall on the first few shots though. After those shots the spalling did seem pretty bad, but not (immediately) fatal. Maybe in the context of police raids and counter-terrorism they saw the spalling as an acceptable tradeoff for stopping the bullets. The spalling could be lifethreatening, but shouldn't be a problem with first aid. Most firefights they're expected to go into are much shorter than those fought in warzones, and with medical aid on standby. I think they accepted the risk of spalling in return for being able to stop multiple hits.

    Ceramic breaks after a few hits, steel plates can keep you in the fight for an extremely long time so long as the shrapnel doesn't hit anything vital. A good solution to the issue with these plate carries would be kevlar sleeves maybe? Kind of like that weird chain mail arms and strap middle armor add on for plate armor in the medieval days. I forgot the name of it but shadiversity showed it on screen in one of his videos. Added weight, sure but, at least the rigs would hold up in combat for extreme fights.

      LOL @ the rant Oxide goes on around 8:40 - the plates stopped everything thrown at them except for the anti materiel bullets - what more do you want from them? They would keep their users alive and combat effective.
      Oxide doesn’t know the realities of budget, especially for having to procure millions of stock. for example if switching to a steel plate and carrier system was $300 extra per unit given the roughly 4,000,000 people who serve in Russian security services, combining the military, internal affairs police, and border guards, this is not accounting for private services nor non-federal police , that’s an extra $1,200,000,000 in total on top of other armor costs. That is a lot for an improvement that doesn’t really do anything, meaning protect the wearers better. And I am certain that I am forgetting about enormous hidden costs, like deals on, repairs replacements, and continuance, and so on.
      There are some very compelling reasons why not everyone outfits all their forces with the newest and best gear.

      @@akompsupport To channel Garand Thumb (who being a veteran and still serving Ranger who does comparative analyses), what is most important is to have some serviceable gear and train with it. Training is the single most important thing you can do. If you have to choose between Gucci gear and developing your skills, take the training. I've had people whine at me about my gear choices. I shoot 54R and x19 instead of Lapua and 10mm, I wear steel instead of ceramic, I run Wolf instead of Corbon, I wear some European pattern instead of Multicam, I have a a body armor instead of a carrier. Could I afford the nicer stuff? Yes.
      BUUUUUUUUUT!
      Then I wouldn't be able to afford the practice. Instead of 2 range sessions per week, with running the primo calibers, I'd be capped at 1 session a month. I would be hesitant to get my nice gear dirty and dinged. And with the massive savings, both upfront, and shot per shot, session per session, I have been able to afford things like real professional instruction at least once annually, regular range trips, participation in competition to check how sharp I really am, and so on. This would have been financially out of my reach if I went with all the latest and greatest.
      If you have to choose between hardware and practice, choose the practice. Good practice can make up for numerous shortcomings in gear, but no gear can save you from inadequate training. Under stress, you will not rise to the price tag of your gear, you will sink to the lowest level of your mastered training.

      Re: Practice. Yes, need to get out w/ your kit and train so you know what works and what needs to be modified/fixed/discarded, etc. Also important to be able to run away if need be with all that additional weight, etc.
