Back to my simple, homey life in the Japanese countryside 🌱 I’m trying to spend as much time with my family as I can 😙 What have you been up to lately?
>I'm 100 years old Reina, dear, if you're 100, I'm 150 and you're the prettiest 100 anyone ever seen. Nowadays, no one makes fun of someone's interests even if it's normal for someone who's supposed to be older than us the viewers or you the sensei~
There can NEVER be enough fruit shit Reina. Never. EDIT: teach me how to make nuka-zuke please おばあちゃん, it looks delicious. Lactic fermentation RULES bruh
It’s a whole ass process 😂 It takes a bit to get the right flavor and mixture of the nukamiso but after that you just keep shoving cucumbers and daikon in there every other day 🥒
@@reinascully must... resist... That's what she said... oops. Damn, that sounds amazing. I've fermented stuff before, but I've never been able to incorporate it into any kind of daily routine. Kudos.
I always look so forward to your blogs. Bringing us through Japan, showing the culture, the food even the transportation. I think it’s awesome that you’ve socialized with the older ladies to go to task on such things like making pickles, that’s awesome! I grew up on the Jersey Shore. So we are both from dirty Jersey… I’m also jealous that you have older family to do such things with! Thank you for you
Reina, I absolutely love seeing these countryside vlogs of Japan. I see a lot of Tokyo and other big cities but it's so nice to get these countryside views of Japan. I love it.
ouch, no wonder why you were crying, get that stuff in your eye and that is going hurt like hell, my friend. be careful. good unboxing, i am still thinking about trying that bokksu service. got to try and work it into my monthly budget.
The TJs Ube cookies are an excellent choice, they are yummy with coffee or tea! The udon looked soo yummy. I’m feeling so snackish after watching this one 😋
@@reinascully their Ube mochi waffles are also amazing, but could probably be made at home with sweet rice flour and Ube extract if you never get a chance to snag a box.
😱 they should put warnings on them or something! These ume fruit & trees are everywhere so we’re all warned as kids not to eat them 🫣 glad you didn’t get sick!
I was able to buy my mother the Naku-miso base when I was at Don Quijote Hawaii. The store imports from Japan and you never know if it will be available in the future. My mother(originally from Tokyo) was so happy. I bought 3 bags for her to share with friends, but she refused to share! Yes, Japanese watermelon is expensive, but the best! I was in Iwakuni years ago, the clerk marked down a hand full of ¥1500 grapes to ¥500. I couldn’t buy them out of guilt. I felt so sorry for the locals paying such a high price. You made a beautiful dinner. Thanks for such a great video.
That was really nice to see. Why are fruit prices so high? Your meal looked absolutely delicious. 😋 Also the scenery with the waterfall was absolutely beautiful. 😁 NJ says hi.🖐
@10:30 this is the kid's favorite udon place. They even have it "To-Go" which is pretty nice. They have um all over... our local Aeon mall has one, and there is one really close to our train station too, so always can find food for the tiny one.
Okinawa is part of the Ryukyu Islands, so the label was trying to be more inclusive than just shouting out to Okinawa Islands specifically. If you meant "Okinawa Prefecture" it's basically the same as the Ryukyu Island Chain (long story short: you weren't really wrong at all!).
😉 Fun vid as always! Love your いなか vlogs♥
You know more or less of me living in Okinawa Sensei Reina for so long & the Shikuwasa aka Shekwasha is a flavor that… I can’t fully get on board with. I tried to use the juice & it was so bitter that I couldn’t get into. Maybe I should just use some juice when I cook VERY SELECTIVE things… I enjoy your videos when it comes to the music too. Makes it very soothing along with the recordings. The only thing about the traveling to come here is that yes it’s open but from my understanding is that any foreigners who do not have a visa or is a citizen has to go through a tour group only. Which means I cannot see my family at all if they come even if they are on a tour group. I tel everyone to stand by for a bit longer until Japan can have more relaxing rules traveling here.
Ahh yes..I myself had to transition into pickling, drying and whatever fermenting our own excess foods, herbs and spices. Dunno if I'll end up making my own yogurt.
I just watched Tokyo Lens' video in Kodanyu: the almost abandoned village in the Gifu mountains Edit: not trying to promote other videos. But thought you'd like the flipping gorgeousness of it.
Ahh, inaka life looks so nice! I wish I could move further away from Tokyo. Ideally, I'd like to move to Shonan since I have some friends out there and it's such a warm inviting place.
Wonderful, I always love these kinds of videos you do about regular life, makes me miss my time I lived in Japan so much and makes me REALLY wish I had that time when I was older to really enjoy it rather than mostly partying. Also never enough about the fruit, hahahaha
Fantastic, real living in Japan! Fantastic Vlog as always! Love the grandma sustainability vibe😊. I live right here in Numanzu and want to see this shrine that you went to. Where exactly is it? It is beautiful. I am addicted to waterfalls! I also love fish and was happy to watch you prepare your fish. I usually broil it. I will try pan-seared next.
Funny if you are Japanese you cut up tofu in your hand with a sharp knife. My family is always mortified. I love pickling in nuka. I did that through the pandemic.
Our watermelons look different here in California we have giant rectangular oval shaped ones or little circle ones like the 5 dollar one you showed :D in the summer its usually 25 to 50 cents per pound so a big watermelon will usually cost like 10 to 20 dollars depending on the size and price 😄☺
I had a pre covid ticket to japan that waited 2 years and the airline said i have to use it in may so i had to change to seoul, it was a great trip but im upset that restrictions were removed right after my trip...
There’s a pretty good selection of plum wine at a lot of Japanese / Asian supermarkets! The most popular brand is called Choya Umeshu and comes in a green cylinder bottle with ume at the bottom 🥃
Your poor eye! Is it ok after that hot oil? Also your dinner looks super yummy! I love fish with vinegar. I use garlic vinegar on fried fish and wow it packs a punch. I like to drench mine with it...my parents always think I'm weird for it lol.
Reina! Was the salmon dried? Did I miss that? It looked dry in the grocery store, but wet/fresh when you cooked it. I’ve tried to do the breakfast salmon and I never know if I’m doing it correctly. I also have eyes that attract everything. Raining? A drop in the eye. Someone’s A/C droplets? A drop in the eye. Cooking with oil? A drop in the eye. 🥲
Uhhhg!! Those fruit prices! Yikes! 60.00 yen for a one mango!! I could get 3/4 of a tank of gas with that with these crazy gas prices in the states!! But those little 5.00 yen melon are cute and perfect for one or two people for a few days. Japanese fruit makes me cry in pain.
I don't know if I'm late to the video because you posted it earlier in the morning of Japan but here in the states it's the afternoon what is the best time to leave a comment so you'll see it ❔
I wonder why fruit is so expensive there? Is it an import/export thing? Is it like a weird tax thing? Can’t speak to quality difference but I can’t imagine even a large quality difference being the only cause for a 3x price difference. Especially since other food categories don’t seem to be too different from other countries I’ve been in.
People are are giving you crap about the prices of fruit in japan have never tasted the glorious fruit n Japan. Not the machanical farmed rubbish we get here. For example, those expensive grapes are hand wrapped on the vine and and the yeaild is minimized to get teh biggest budo possible. Not even the same.
How was that salmon..... like out? Was it frozen? It looked hard... I mean ... I'm sure it wasn't just raw salmon in a box right? Right? Frozen i understand...I'm concerned how it being kept cold.... I'm just concerned in general....
Perhaps you could explain. I welcomed her home.
