    I'm born in a Hindu family in India and we don't really celebrate Christmas here but Diwali is the biggest festival here. My favourite tradition on Diwali is making Rangoli... it's an art made of dry colors on the floor and then lighting up the whole house with beautiful lamps (called diyas in Hindi) and candles

    • @darsh____
      @darsh____ Před 6 měsíci +2

      I can completely relate to that as an Indian and a Hindu.
      Every year, as Diwali approaches, my sister and i make rangoli in our corridor and our neighbors/ residents of the building come and appriciate our effort a lot and we also light up the entire house with divas and scented candles ❤
      It is truly one of the most magical times of the year❤

    My favourite Christmas tradition:
    I grew up in a large family with 6 children, and every year before Christmas, we'd pick a day where all of us together would cut paper stars/snowflakes of all shapes, sizes and colours. These would then be stuck on all the kitchen and living room windows. My mum taught all of us how to make them from a very young age and it's been so fun to see the designs becoming more beautiful and intricate every year. Once the stars are on the windows, it's like the christmas festivities can officially begin.
    Last year I spent a few months in England, and it was the first and only christmas I've ever been away from my family. I missed them so much. When I told my flatmates about this tradition that I love, a few of them wanted to learn how to do it. We then spent our day cutting stars together and sticking them on the windows, and it was like I had a little piece of home with me. It's a nice memory to have.

    I am Polish, and the christmas tradition that I find the most special is leaving an empty seat with a set of dishes and cutlery at the Christmas Eve table. On that winter night families open their homes and hearts for an unexpected guest, travellers and the most lonely, so they can join the celebrations and feel the warmth of christmas spirit. The empty seat reminds us also of our loved ones who are no longer with us, but whose presence and love lives on in our hearts and, that magical night, seems almost tangible.

      This is actually a custom we do every year in Greece: on Christmas eve morning and on new year's eve afternoon children go from door to door singing carols, and the houses' owners open the doors and give them some money and chocolates. These song are in fact announcing to the homeowner that on that noght Jesus will be born and the new year will begin respectively. My favorite ritual is probably making latte with espresso that made with my moka pot, lighting a candle in my late grandma's candle holder and creating myself a magical atmosphere to write a little diary and then read a book. Sometimes I do a time lapse and read until my candle runs out, and I found really cool to videotape it. I prefer to do this ritual in my room on the garden floor, it is very pleasant to watch the chickens, cats and birds in the garden. This fall, I also planted tulips, hyacinths and daffodils bulbs. Planting bulbs was also one of the most important rituals of my last 1-2 months.
    And before I forget, I wanted to say that if you have uploaded a new video before this coffee-candle-book ritual I am describing, I will definitely watch you first, Ruby. You motivate me so much and also I feel like I'm doing this routine with a friend.

I would only be able to see my granny when she travelled far to stay three times a year: my birthday, my brother's birthday and Christmas. On Christmas Eve my granny would ask me to go "shopping", which wasn't exactly possible in our small Scottish village. What she would really do is take me to a small coffee shop and treat me to a cake and drink and we'd talk for hours. When I was little I thought this was so special as my family "thought we were shopping" (they knew what we were up to really!) and created a special bond between me and my gran. Unfortunately she can't come to visit anymore as she has Alzheimer's disease, so me and my mum have carried on the tradition instead!
