    There's a lot of marketing going on here. basically it's Chinook salmon, NOT a different sub species. They're just being grown to larger sizes. Also Chinook are not native to New Zealand, they were introduced, and New Zealand is the largest exporter of Chinook salmon in the world, so saying that they "didn't even know they were there" is disingenuous.

      898792 Thank you for toning down the Hype and excitement about the farm raised King Salmon that is being farm raised in New Zealand . I am not sure if New Zealand had established natural Salmon runs by transplanting them from one of the Native runs of the Pacific Salmon.

    1. They use water from the Te Waikoropupū Springs.
    2. Seals come "all the way from the sea" to eat the fish.
    In other words, it's near Golden Bay, New Zealand.

    A fence to keep the seals from trekking through the forest to get these special salmon? People paying $17,000 for one farmed salmon? Farmed salmon who's flesh is gray until it's dyed pink? I live in Washington State in the US, Tyee just means it's a big Chinook salmon. Fishermen get $15 a pound for wild Chinook (Sockeye only gets $10 a pound). It is neither rare or mythical, just more upscale that what you would find in a can. Fact checking this on the internet probably would have only set you back only 5 minutes.

      @@harrycurrie9664 I spent 3 more minutes of my life finding that part and you're right, 17 hundred, which is in the realm of reasonable. After another 2 minute investment of my time I learned (from a sketchy AI summary) that salmon farmers now feed supplements to their fish so their flesh isn't grey anymore. Maybe if this guy fed them some of that wasabi to give them a spicy kick he would have something special. That or feed them coffee beans and roast what they poop out. For some reason people pay big money for coffee that was naturally processed by exotic animals. Who knows, maybe that coffee would be high in omega-3's.

      Growing up in Milwaukee, WI, my family was poor enough that availability of meat was sometimes an issue.

    The only reason they are growing large is they are unable to swim up a fresh water river to breed. That fresh water causes salmon to deteriorate as they search for a suitable place to lay eggs. The King salmon in Alaska become very large because there are less dammed rivers that keep total numbers down.

    • @joemurphy6736
      @joemurphy6736 Před 3 měsíci +1

      i’m not sure if freshwater is what directly causes the deterioration of salmon. In the great lakes, salmon spend their whole lives in freshwater and only deteriorate after entering the spawning system, some even spend their whole lives in very large rivers. however, I am unfamiliar with the exact reason why they decline so rapidly after entering streams.
