    i heard that the way he was racking up prizes so quickly in Korea is a proof that the producers were doing shady things, withholding prizes, in Japan, because it would’ve been much harder for them to intercept in a foreign country

      It would be perfectly fine and well if this poor dude had a John Wick moment and took out all the producers and everyone involved. The fact that they not only tortured this sweet, fun and genuinely wholesome bright dude but also broadcasted as "entertainment" and ALSO people watched him get tortured to laugh at him whilst he was butt naked and essentially becoming a playtoy for the whole country. It's dehumanizing and how the hell everyone involved is not sent to the jails is very very bizarre.

    The fact that I remember 1998 (the year I turned 11) as the greatest year from the '90s - all the while, *TOMOAKI HAMATSU* (call him by his *real* name), an incredibly intelligent and kind man, missed out on that ENTIRE YEAR because vile predators were profiting *_immensely_* by torturing him LIVE ON AIR to _MILLIONS_ of people, I just...     What terrified me was the music, and the commentary in the background. It was a similar tone of voice and similar music to one of my fave japanese shows ever, Old Enough- which is literally about toddlers going on cute little errands. They weren't treating this like a tragedy- they saw it as COMIC.

      The music and the announcer are extremely unsettling. You'd imagine it was meant to make the viewers feel uncomfortable, having such a contrast between the cheery voices and the miserable scene on the screen, but I think it was actually meant to be amusing and humorous. They really didn't see anything wrong with mocking the suffering of the "contestant"

      I don't think eating raw meat is nessesarily bad for your health. It could be but only if it the meat is contaminated, which most meat probably isn't.
      In a situation like this you're better off eating it. As you see it didn't kill him. I doubt it did him any harm at all.
      You should still just cook it though, assuming you can. kill all the bacteria and make it more nutritious.

    as a child in the special ed program of a not-so-great elementary school, i was periodically locked in padded rooms for sometimes up to 2-3 hours. that fucked me up for life.
    even having that experience (which is admittedly not really similar), i cannot IMAGINE what being locked away from society for over a year would do to someone, much less being mocked on TV and starved in addition to that. holy shit

      from what i remember of my state’s laws (it’s been a while since i looked at these laws & a while since elementary), they can indeed legally do that as long as they notify the principal after 30 minutes & the principal gives the go ahead 🙃
      the rooms technically don’t ‘lock’ tho, but they do have someone on the other side holding the door at all times so… essentially they do lock, just not with a locking mechanism that comes with the door.

      All of what charlie said was fact (idk, i think). But he only mention the bad side of it which is kinda unfair bc its not the bigger picture of this case. So in 90s a lot of japanese comedian had to participate in these types of game show such as Silent Library(more extreme than the us version), this show, etc in order to be famous. Which they did, they get their fame from that and currently became the senior comedian and get to be a commentarors of current show, if you ever see one they are the people in those little box on the corner of every game show.

    His real name is Tomoaki Hamatsu and he actually hasn't done that bad for himself. He's a local influencer in his area, eventually created his own acting stage group 'Eggplant Way' that travelled across Japan and he still gets on TV shows to this day. He's also climbed Mount Everest, which is pretty damn impressive.
    He also announced today (his birthday) that he'll be opening his own CZcams channel... so Charlie making this video on his birthday is also kind of an unintentional promo for his new channel I guess.... even if the majority of us don't speak japanese and will have no clue what he's saying.

    this story makes me unbelievably sad, and makes me respect this man so much. because of the hulu documentary that came out recently about this, he did this interview for time magazine about how he felt. he felt like he couldn’t leave the room when they transferred him to korea, because his mental health was so deteriorated that he felt that he couldn’t give up. the producer said that tomoaki was so incredibly angry about this that he saw “anger coming out of every pore in his skin.” he said throughout the time he wanted to die and was losing hair along with weight. i’m glad that the documentary is well received, and tomoaki (nasubi) said that he was happy that his documentary helped people that struggle with loneliness and isolation. absolute legend of a man

    The fact they chose to staff an entire team to keeping his junk censored while live instead of just giving him a single pair of boxer shorts is incredibly diabolical. They WANTED to keep this man in shame and I absolutely agree with Charlie's conspiracy that they were intentionally keeping clothing from entering the room. The whole draw of the show was he was naked in a room losing his mind.

    I fully believe this video was the reason the documentary was made. I'm so happy everyone gets to see this now and spread how vile it was, but also end the documentary with such a positive and warm feeling from all. This man is a fucking hero.       @@dswp4882 he didn't continue out of a contractual obligation. He did it out of societal pressure, corporate pressure, and legal pressure. You can't exactly get up an leave if you're wearing nothing but a pair of used panties you "got from sweepstakes". Not to mention devotion, determination, and perseverance are all respected characteristics in Japanese culture so quitting would have him looked down upon by society. Then there's the fact he was lied to the entire time by the producers, and while it may be easy to see those lies now they may have seemed much more enticing to him at the time, and those producers would've kept trying everything to keep him on as long as possible as shown when they kept raising the stakes at the end without telling him just to stretch their time airing this shit. Also they probably didn't have any sort of on site injury waiver or anything like that especially when they knew the very nature is this challenge could kill him, and unlike in America they likely weren't required at the time, and still probably aren't with the crazy shit they making into shows sometimes.

He explained in subsequent interviews that he didn't leave because obligation and endurance are important values in Japanese culture, and because he didn't have any clothes to wear in the outside world.
