I had no idea that I'd ever see it again, but a little over a week ago, while at a local mechanics shop here in the county I live in, I spotted my bike! Someone who lives in the city, which is 50 miles away, where it had been stolen, had brought it out for repairs. Needless to say, it was loaded up and delivered to my house, a mile from that shop! It has sustained a lot of damage, but I am in the process of rebuilding it. Your idea of leaving off the chromed plastic head covers is exactly what I have planned. The chrome had started to peel off anyway, and besides, I think they look cheesey and cheap... I've got some good styling cues from your build. They came with the bike. I guess the previous owner changed them

How hard was it to black out the forks?
It wasn't too bad, I had to take it to a pro for spraying
any mods to the cables to fit the handlebars
No, luckily, the cable was just long enough so I didn't need to extend it
