For those who don't know, this scenario is based on multiple poems and scenarios described by people in the trenches. One of the most famous being how a German soldier wanted to shoot a horse dead, because it was stuck in barbed wire in a crater-ditch. For days it screemed as its intestines were stuck in the barbed wire and the horse desperately tried to fight loose. The wild, fearful eyes of the horse was all that ever raised above the crater and never far enough for anyone to risk camoflague to shoot it. So they waited, in silence, on both sides, for the screaming horse to scream and scream and scream. For almost a week, before it finally silenced.

However, I have read stories where US citizens went to the U.K., managed to enlist in the British Army, and were then honorably discharged under direct orders from the King & US State Department. In 1914 and 1915 the USA was *neutral.* Biggest mistake the USA ever did was get into that war. Why? WWII is just WWI with the crazies who survived the Great War in charge. Neutrality works. The USA is winless in war since 1945 because we are never neutral.
I think he had just gotten home on New Year's Eve 1919-1920. So almost 3 years, if he went early. I think he said he volunteered soon after the US declared war but I can't swear to it.
Jimmy volunteered right after the Lusitania was sunk. He mentions it in one episode where he's at Princeton, and he goes to the recruiting station after sleeping with his Mom.
Jimmy fought in France for 3 years? The US declared war on Germany in April of 1917 and US troops didn't arrive on the Western Front until the summer of 1918. The war ended in November of 1918, so Jimmy's math doesn't add up, unless he was serving with the French or English armies.
+foresight87 was in the army for 3 years doesn't mean he fought all 3 years. When he did fight it was mostly in france. You can be in the army for 4 years ( i think thats the standard term) and not see any action depends if theres any fighting going on if not you just do regular duties
There were many Americans who volunteered as part of a fighting force with other allied nations, though I'm not exactly sure how that worked back then, as the rules were quite different then.

Favorite scene. Jimmy and Richard are badasses.
Got the prototype Karen screaming in every scene !
It seems to happen a lot in this show. It's super irritating.
Yeah, its only a person shot in the eye.
Just love the "Phantom of the Opera" intro music at the end.
The magnificent introduction of Mr. Richard Harrow's work...
This story right here is why Jimmy was the way he was....never rattled...never felt "threatened" when others tried getting tough with him...you go back...Jimmy hardly raised his voice...
Once you've seen REAL hell....(WAR) ...everything else seems petty and trivial
I honestly believe...had this guy been a soldier too....Jimmy very well might not have let Harrow kill him...
Good point.Jimmy said he died in the trenches.
"You won't"
Damn right
Jimmy and Richard were two of my favorite characters.
It's the only time when Jimmy confessed details about war time to anyone (other than Harrow, who was also a vet). And he could do that only by knowing that this man is going to die in a minute. So he used that opportunity.
Revenge is Best Served COLD!!
"1 inch below the eye"
One of my favorite shows...
Best gangster series I've seen it is very underrated. I've watched it four time and will again.
I think the shot under the eye should officially be called “the Richard Harrow-special”
Mad Meddling Maddow Yeah Lot Of People Die From A Under The Eye Shot In This Show
It's a Death Cum Blast
One of the best scenes of TV history.
That’s a stretch
Calm your tits buddy
This was the very scene that made me realize that this show was going to get really good ❤ a show about real life gangsters but also with two ex soldiers/thugs/assassins is why i fell in love with this show even more
Jimmy & Richard the real badasses that nobody ever tried to talk shit to or fist fight , even Lucky & Capone feared these two
One of my favorite scenes of all time
That is one fucked up aspect ratio!
Man, this scene gives me the goosebumps...
I love the Grim Reaper music at the end
I hate how in season one anytime there was a kill there was some hysterical woman screaming her ass off in the background. Totally kills the mood for a lot of otherwise well filmed scenes. Check Pearls suicide for another example.
+Tobey VanWeston Its like the dogs barking in The Wire
Or a trumpet player freaking out in OZ.
that was little richard...
Well do you expect them to walk by the body and not give a shit?
@@asokahanderson122 i expect them to not scream up and down like a 🎢 rollercoaster for a minute straight, maybe a "oh my god" or "insert expletives here" but anything but what she did.
Jimmy was living in Chicago with Capone, and a prostitute in their "house" was savagely knifed across the fact as some kind of demented "lesson." Jimmy felt close to her in his own fashion, and felt the need to avenge this thoughtless cruelty.
And I'm glad other people have written about Jimmy's relationship with his own experiences in the war and his relationship with his own death. I don't think I would have seen it this way without their takes on it, and it deepened my appreciation.
Thanks for the explanation, I had forgotten what this dude had done.
Jimmy was sleeping with Pearl - not for money - and while he wasn’t in love with he did think she was a sweet girl, plus Jimmy generally hated women getting hurt
I never understood how Jimmy served 3 years in the war when the US only joined in 1917.
he volunteered, the states knew about the war from the beginning just did not officially join it.
@@jhondahl3111 nope. Men could join specialized units, like the flying units under the French or the French Foreign Legion.
@@Easy-Eight Don't be silly.
@@jhondahl3111 That sounds like bullshit to me.
3:41-3:46 love how you can just barely make out her still screaming 😂😂😂😂
Great acting!
This was a damn good series ♥️
One of the best
He was drafted in 1917, the usual hitch was three years, and he was discharged in 1920.
I think he had just gotten home on New Year's Eve 1919-1920. So almost 3 years, if he went early. I think he said he volunteered soon after the US declared war but I can't swear to it.
He was drafter in 1917?
Jimmy volunteered right after the Lusitania was sunk. He mentions it in one episode where he's at Princeton, and he goes to the recruiting station after sleeping with his Mom.
Masterpiece 🔥
Almost impossible to describe the horror and the nightmares. It is the only way to describe things goes on while in a combat duty serving the war!
He was in the Army for three years: 1917, 1918, 1919. He wasn't discharged until 1919 which is why when the show begins in 1920 he's just gotten back.
There were many Americans who volunteered as part of a fighting force with other allied nations, though I'm not exactly sure how that worked back then, as the rules were quite different then.
dont be THAT guy...
think as an american you'd have to travel to the UK or Canada to join up, im sure they didnt care what your nationality was (unless you were from an opposing nation), they needed bodies
Richard Harrow is such an amazing character. I know this is really weird, but does he remind anybody else of the 'Ghouls' in the Fallout franchise?
This show was a masterpiece.
damn straight
Three years? How? The US joined WWI on April 2, 1917, and the war ended on November 11, 1918.
Obviously his entire enlistment wich lasted trough occupation into 1920 or he could have been redeployed to the russian intervention.
@@Ulyssestnt He spent a lot of that time in the hospital for his shattered leg bone.
Great scene.
Awesome little detail: After he gets shot, you can see the curtains in the window behind the waiter shift as the sniper disappears.
I feel this is a key scene that predicts Jimmy's death. Jimmy always saw himself as the soldier trapped in the wire, no matter what he did the pain got worst. The soldier never wanted death but Jimmy was willing to accept his fate and saw no way out of his past. He lookd to Nucky to "pull the trigger"
Best monolog ever.
He should have fired one more time to save everyone in the shop from the screaming banshee
definitely the coolest, brick-shtting moment of the show so far
Yeah sure, it doesn't look like you're carrying a rifle.
💀💀💀
psych scene,gotta luv it.
I've never seen the show, but I've seen 5-6 short clips here on YT. Thank God for YT! Now I don't have to waste my time watching the series
Jimmy was hot as hell, but I must say that I was also attracted to Richard. Half of his face was blown off, yet his character drew me in. I was not surprised at all that a beautiful woman like Julia had fallen in love with him. I remember being so happy for him when she came along.
they weren’t with him for his
looks…
Oh, shit! I JUST got the Phantom Of The Opera reference))))))))))
“I’m gonna go now, I don’t wanna ever you ever again” that was the most polite way to threaten someone
"Mutti, mutti..."
That's german for mama
It's actually pronounced "Mutta"
In my language that means "shit" so it was kinda funny hearing Jimmy say it
@@seanhuds229 no, it is not.
@@miroslavklose779 Well it obviously depends where you are from, but I can assure you thats how people pronounce it where I am.
