This video is about Pros and Cons of Washington DC and living in the District of Columbia. We break down the pros and cons of Washington dc and this video is part 1, the pros. Tracy and I were taking one of our frequent Washing DC vacations and met with our daughter to chat about living in Washington DC, working in Washington DC, and a key pro of having accessible transportation. Our daughter Jasmine gave some great DC tips and we touched on other topics including business in Washington DC, colleges in Washington DC, what neighborhoods to live in and things to consider when moving to Washington DC. Whether it's fantastic dining or free sightseeing, there are lots of pros and things to do in Washington DC.
What a wonderful video. As a 31 year financially responsible Black homeowner this video was very uplifting to my spirit. In the past I lived in the hood for many years but it was just a mere stepping stone to something greater. We will have our home paid off in 12 years and we are NOT IN THE HOOD anymore. Prayerfulness is everything.
So happy for you Lucretia. Vision and prayer are powerful. Check out our podcast too on Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Stitcher and Spotify. It’s called Joyfully Married After. Thanks for watching!
I love how while your daughter is talking you guys are co-signing, it's so cute. Perfect! :)
Thanks for the love! And thanks for watching!
Thanks for the informative video guys!
Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for sharing your insights and advice. You three are inspiring, beautiful and full of wisdom. Peace, Love, and Health
Thanks for the Love! And thanks for watching!
Thank you all for the excellent information on both videos! Lovely family! I'm from NC and my husband is from DC. We are always back and forth. We love both.
So glad to hear from someone who knows. Thanks for watching!
Thank you guys so much!!!! This was very insightful. I wrote everything and will be doing some research for sure. Jasmine was great! I am getting my degree in social work, so knowing it will be easier to find a job there makes me happy. I love your family. It looks like you guys have a great bond. Thanks again!
+Danielle Coleman you are more than welcome. So glad you found value in the video. We love you back! All the best to you!
Great family vibes, seems like you guys are excellent parents, y’all did a wonderful job I’m feeling this
Thanks for the love and thanks for watching!
Loved part 1 and part 2! My husband and I are seriously considering moving to DC in the next coming months and both of these videos have been very helpful! Thanks so much for sharing!

The best pros and cons on a city ever!! 💕💕💕 Thank you!
So glad you found it valuable Dr. Kai! Check out our website, HeathandTracy.com and our podcast too, “Joyfully Married After “ on your favorite audio platform 😉
You guys, thank you SO MUCH for going through this topic. I have been looking into moving the area for a job and just to find out that its hard to survive/nearly impossible to survive on less than 50,000 a year, is a HUGE tip foe me. as a person who just graduated and looking to relocate there, its great to know at what point I'm being low balled and what amount isn't worth the move. Thank you.
That’s why we did it! So glad we could help. Get your coins if moving to the DMV. Thanks for watching!
Very informative, thank you! You've confirmed for me that the pros outweigh the cons.
Glad this was helpful. DC is a great place! Pricey but awesome. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this video. It’s really helpful
Glad you found it valuable Carlos. Check out our podcast too on Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Stitcher and Spotify. Thanks for watching!

Yep, traffic and cost was the #1 reason for the move to NC, But would love to go back. Absolutely love you all!! Peace and blessings!
Plus and minuses to everything in life. It’s about what’s best for you, your budget and your life at a given time. All the best Nicole! Thanks again for watching!
I was just offered a job in DC and your videos gave me better insight on DC. I am currently in Atlanta and the cost of living is very affordable. Good video!
+ItsGippetto congratulations! We LOVE DC! You can make a real go of it there. Not as easy as the ATL but looks of opportunity. Best quality of life too is to live as close as you can to work. Good luck and thanks for watching!
I love your channel. I am originally from NC too. I attended Saint Augustine's University and NCCU for grad school. I am in Richmond now, but I plan on moving to DC next year when my lease is up. There is so much more opportunity as far as career advancement. Thank you for all the helpful tips!!!
+Nini J you'll really enjoy DC. Take your wallet though! Thanks for watching! Check us out at HeathandTracy.com too Nini😉
+Nini J Good luck on the move! We love DC. It will make you or break you. Stay prayed up and thanks for watching! HBCU love ❤️
I'm from NC too and DC does have more advancement! I agree.
Hey nini did you ever move to dc
Even with all the cons in DC, I'm still trying to move there. I used to live in NOVA and I'd go to DC during holidays.
We LOVE DC!!! Get your coins up!
Yes with all the cons I’m still going to move lol I’m from Detroit
Me and my grandmother are deciding to move to DC since we already have a house there...these videos are very informative! Thank you!
That is HUGE! Please make sure you keep it and you will be sitting pretty on the future. Thanks for watching!
HeathandTracyTV No problem! It is my great grandmother’s house, and it has been there for YEARS. I just hope that it will stay like that . However, so you think it is vital to have a car in DC? I do not drive yet and I need to know if I should get a hold on that 😂😂
No! Isn’t that awesome! You won’t NEED a car in DC. But having ACCESS to one is nice. Go ahead and get your drivers license so that you can use Zip car and other services like that. They are abundant in DC. Always Capital Bike system is EVERYWHERE! My daughter has lived there for 4 years without a car, but she has a license so she can get one whenever she needs it.
One Beautiful Family!!!! Just BEAUTIFUL
Really appreciate the kind words ramelep...Thanks for watching!
that was very insightful. thanks! 😃

I Appreciated these videos, good points.
+Jerry Cronan sure thing . Glad you found value. Check us out at HeathandTracy.com as well. Thanks for watching!
I was born and raised in DC and it has changed A LOT. I hate to hear they are passing out speed tickets by camera (makes me not want to visit home) charging you for grocery bags, love being outside = more exercise, love that it's a lot to do. I don't know a lot about rent b/c the parents were paying that bill.
DC is awesome! Bring your checkbook though!😉 Thanks for watching!
Yes the cameras are everywhere. It makes me feel like I should just drive school zone speed all the time
Thank you for doing this video! I currently live in Michigan and recently finished my Masters. I'm looking to move to DC or Atlanta sometime this year. It's been hard making a decision so I plan to apply for jobs in both areas and see what happens.
Take you time and visit both. We are working on getting our ATL video done soon too. We still visit and have many connections there. Good Luck and thanks for watching!
Great video. I lived in Silver Spring (Downtown) back in the early 2000s, during the transformation that took place here, as well across DC proper. It's interesting because parts of DC that few people would venture into are now living, dining and entertainment hotspots. Now compared to then, there are parts of both regions that are virtually unrecognizable. When I first moved there in 2000, my apartment IN downtown Silver Spring was 600 a month, utilities included. I was near a Metro, about 5 blocks away (had to cross Georgia Ave) and only used my car on the weekends as I commuted to Arlington. Fast forward to 2007 , the rent was $1200 for a 1 BR. I can only imagine in 2018 what the prices are now and the construction and new development is continuing. If you love Ethiopian cuisine and culture, the DMV, esp Adams Morgan, Alexandria and Silver Spring (huge population of Ethiopians here) is the place to be. If i'm not mistaken, the DMV has the largest population of Ethiopians outside of that respective country and the capitol of Addis Abba. You can also get good Caribbean cuisine, African (Sub-Saharan), Asian, Middle Eastern you name it. Living here wore on me and I moved away as it was no longer my cup of tea, but that doesn't mean it's not for someone else.
Lots of things to live about DC. It certainly has changed quite a bit over the years...True, it can weigh on you. Thanks for the great commentary. Appreciate you watching!
Absolutely
@@HeathandTracyTV bad changes for the average native....horrible extream gentrification.
Would like to reiterate how important these videos are as a black person trying to move out of state. Thank you guys for these city reviews
Thanks for the love and thanks for watching!
Lovely family!! Wealth of information I'm a Florida Realtor near 12-years looking for change. Your Cary-NC & this video is super helpful. So far I’m loving DC reviews much better. Higher housing cost is super good for the industry so thx peeps.
Real estate is popping in the DC area. Great opportunity for US to rise to the higher end. Keep your FL home tho. Thanks for watching!
I’m a Virginia Native born and raise in the Hampton roads area I’m looking to move too DC area by 2023 🤦🏾♀️ I’m just haven’t a hard time choosing between either Alexandria or Arlington could somebody please help me out with some info Please Thank you🕯🙏🕯
Look for upcoming info! Live show soon! Thanks for watching!
Informative video
Thanks so much Amyia. Have you heard our podcast? It's called Joyfully Married After on iTunes, Google Play and Stitcher. Check us out! Thanks so much for watching.
Thanx for the video. It's expensive in Cali too but atleast we can live by the beach with 35k. Some things is hard to compromise on.
You have been doing your research! Thanks for watching!

+eazyboyfresh wow....Thanks for watching!
Just gotta say I love the energy of your family...
Thanks for the love and thanks for watching!
Update! bit.ly/Wheredidweland
i feel like you guys are my family. lol this is great. i definetly still want to move to dc
We ARE your family! DC is my favorite..just make sure you prepare.
Same here, I'm moving there too.
Hey tianna did you ever move to dc
DC Rules! ^_^
I am considering moving to the DC area, I am from the metro-Philadelphia area, and I currently live in the metro-Atlanta area. I plan on doing all the research on the move. All the videos I have watched, this has been the most informative video I have seen yet. I am an independent contractor, and I am trying to stay away from the corporate structure. I am from the hood, so somewhere that is partially "hood" but efficient and affordable. The weather wont be a problem, I'm more into networking with the creatives, thinkers, and do-ers.
Lots of creatives in the DC area, BUT because of the cost of living they also have “day jobs”. Please keep that in mind before heading that way. You can do it if you Network and hook up with people you know. The support system is real! Good luck and thanks for watching!
There's more places about my city as a native perspective. But you guys are great and hit a lot of it...lol love you vlogs.
Thanks so much for love and respect Steven. Appreciate you watching!
You guys are great!!! See I told you in the previous video there was no point in wasting life and Youth blowing the dust off of each other in North Carolina. True it has beautiful typography , but guess what you can drive there from you are lovely home and gorgeous Prince George's. I transferred to Howard from Fayetteville State. A native New Yorker so you know I had no love for NC. Especially in Fayetteville where the slave market still stands and is a revered City icon. I have raised my family right here in the Washington area. Cheaper than New York, but with all the New York accoutrement and still only 5 hours from New York by car 3 by Amtrak. Let's face it this is the capital of black middle class. I love it and I'm thankful to God for having been guided here. Blessings always to you and your wonderful family
Thank you so much for the video!! I am a freshman in college and I want to move there! It is very scary since I am not going as a “ proper college bound” student so I have to figure out how to survive there I am afraid I won’t find any minimum wage jobs to at least help me with the expenses but I really wanna go there for my future career I live in Florida and I hate it it’s hoot and although house living is cheap there’s barely jobs out here and they all pay so low so it’s not worth it and it’s not diverse at all; there’s a bunch of Hispanics here so I feel isolated it just sucks hopefully I can make it there as a regular transfer college student 😩🙏🏿
Great schools here! Lots of different jobs here too. Also, rent is reasonable. Good luck on the move and thanks for watching! Pray on it!
HeathandTracyTV Thank you I sure will!
Dream of Jasmine I found. Jasmine is so smart all three of you are so smart.
She is going to start joining us at the end of June on our Saturday morning Lives!
What are some outlying areas in VA & MD that you would reccomend for someone working in DC.
I’m from crazy NYC (Brooklyn to be exact) so I’ve seen it all!
Take your pic Angelique. Bethesda, Chevy Chase, Silver Spring, Hyattsville, Capital Heights, College Park, Arlington, Alexandria, Tyson’s Corner. The closer in the more expensive...All the best. Thanks for watching!
@@HeathandTracyTV Thank you for sharing all this helpful info! Hubby and I are looking to make the move in 2021 however not in DC ultimately but rather in MD. However, we are looking to rent our first year in or around DC until we get a feel for where we would like to settle at in the MD/VA metro area. :)
Thank you for both pros and cons. I'm still moving but Jazmine has warned me 😀.
Thanks for watching!
Trust and Believe🤣🤣🤣 I'm cracking up over here
Trust! 🤣
exactly !!!! CONNECTICUT SNOW IS SERIOUS!!!🤣🥶🥶🥶🥶❤
You know ALL about it 😁
I live in Minneapolis and I randomly got a boot put on my car that was sitting in a weird spot in a chipotle parking lot. I will never forget the feeling of coming out of chipotle full and ready to go home and take a nap, and seeing that bright yellow boot on my car 😂😂😂
Dominique, we have experienced this too 🤣. Thanks for watching!
Y’all got it. Lol. I’m in Florida living one block from the water 900sq ft for $900. Huge balcony. North is crowded
We love Florida Corey. Sounds like you have a nice set up! Catch our live show in Saturdays at 11am Eastern. Thanks for watching!
Moving to D.C from Miami this upcoming weekend for a career move. Thankfully, I have family to stay with until I get on my feet. What really concerns me is the weather change and getting lost with the trains. Are there any groups that you can recommend for POC that are looking for rooms in the city with other POC?
Hey Clarence, do you mean you’re moving to DC? If so, the weather is not too extreme. You have all 4 seasons so dress appropriately. The trains are are easy. Just go to metro 🚇 website and look at the map. Between Lyft, Uber and Metro, you’ll be fine...Thanks for watching!
@@HeathandTracyTV I found a DC housing group on FB. I'll check it out. Thanks for the tips, this video informed me on a lot!! Definetly will check out the metro website as well.
HEY Jazzy!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
❤️❤️❤️❤️
This is interesting considering that I happened to watch your video on Living in NC because it’s where my husband and I live (Greensboro ) BUT we are currently looking at moving to the dmv area , so here I am again! Both of us have lived in expensive cities when single but we moved to Nc to settled down- yet work is presenting this option . SO what I can get over (tears) is leaving out BRand new custom built home to go back to renting in the dmv area , it’s not just cost it’s what you get for the cost . At this season of life, apartment living is not an option SO I guess the commutes will be longer etc .... and the prospect of owning a home again in the future is questionable and I HATE it ! We are trying to start a family and this is why I’ve struggled with wanting to do this ... don’t know if I’ll ever get over it
Congratulations! Love the DMV! If we go back we will be in the city in an apartment. Save those coins.. you are going to need them! Good luck on the move and thanks for watching... again.
I can identify about allergies while living in DC. I was allergic to some of the trees there.
I moved to the South, and since I moved here, I do not have allergies.
Even though there is a tremendous amount of pollen here.
Allergies 🤧 affect people differently. I have them here but they are manageable. Thanks for watching!
Originally from VA. Been on the Wes for 8 years since military. Do yall know much about Maryland? Got accepted for a federal job with the FDA in Silver Springs. Its pricey of course, in regards to cost of living. Any suggestions for great places to live with high sense of quality, safe, and for ideal for starting a family?
Maryland is great for proximity to DC but it has a higher cost of living than most places in the south. But it is Cheaper than living in DC proper. Look at Upper Marlboro and PG County for better pricing.
@@HeathandTracyTV Will do thank you!
The Penalty for driving in DC is Parking and Street Cameras are all over the DMV but you learn where they are at fast!!!
#FACTS. Thanks for watching!
We take the subway...as for driving I used to go thru red lights, drive on oncoming traffic lanes, pause at stop signs, and park in front of hydrants....and it was all legal😄🚒
Google Maps lets you know where the street cameras are which is pretty cool lol
Hey, I'm getting ready to move to DC...I was going through videos about living in DC and came across your channel...I'm also from the South...what's your recommendations on living in DC with a 60,615 starting salary...thanks for your time...
If you can avoid having a car or driving it a lot. You may also want to look at have roommates while you get settled. DC is an exciting place to live but expensive. Good luck on the move and thanks for watching!
Live close to work &/or close to the metro so you can get to work easily; without driving. Location is really important. Keep your costs down and get a roommate or two or three if necessary. Take some time to get acclimated and then readjust....Thanks for watching. Check out our podcast too on Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Stitcher and Spotify. Joyfully Married After. All the best on your move!
Can we get the video on Maryland or Virginia?
Good idea! Thanks for watching!
It's sunny in D.C.!
As they say in DC, “Sho you right”😉. Thanks for watching!
I miss the cold !! All 4 seasons!!!
All 4 are here for sure!
And we get snow...this past winter it was a decent amount speed out from Dec to March...and cold.
Looking to get back to DC soon! Left DC for Atlanta two years ago and while it’s a fine city, it’s no DC
Agreed! DC aid our favorite. Lived in the ATL and great place, but between the two I would LOVE to live in DC.
Jasmine you so gorgeous looking !! Cute hairstyle and fly looking sunglasses!!
Thanks for the kind words Russell! Thanks for watching!
@@HeathandTracyTV Yes yes!! I live in Atlanta. I visited D.C. one time for the 2015 Million Man March. We stayed at a hotel near Springfield Mall in Springfield, Virginia. Lovely city but very expensive too live. You got to have a good paying job to live there. I do want to visit again.
Your daughter is a her dad copy. Amazing family. Is there a way you guys can do a video focusing in the DMV area for someone who graduated from college looking for a job & good Neighborhood, affordable and graduate schools. I want your advice plz. I'm coming from New York City
Mari, thanks so much for the kind words. I think if you watch both DC videos again, most of your questions would be answered. Use Google to identify the companies you want to target. Google Federal jobs. Get your LinkedIn tight. Find people in the area that are willing to help you; get you an introduction for and interview. Do some research on interviewing skills. Go for it! Thanks for watching Mari. Check us out at HeathandTracy.com ;-)
My husband got thousands of dollars worth of tickets when he worked at the state dept...and spent hundreds a month on garage parking, so glad he works now somewhere that has a parking lot for free! Now it's ezpass he's paying a load on. D.C. takes all your money. We are thinking of just moving to the city to just have him take the metro.
The city might make sense Donnie. All the best! Thanks for watching!
I love her great video
We do too! Thanks for watching!
Where were you guys sitting here? looks like a beautiful area
City Center, Washington DC..
Any tips on looking for jobs? I’m young and have no degree. I am moving to DC if I can and have meat cutting construction and warehouse and restaurant experience. Any good jobs?
Check out Amazon’s website. They have warehouses in Northern VA and Maryland. They have some other jobs that don’t require degrees too. You could supplement with a restaurant or grocery store type work. Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s , etc. Best of luck! Thanks for watching! DC sounds like NYC
We like DC a bit better than NY, but different strokes for different folks! Thanks for watching!
It’s so different than NYC
It’s more like the European cities.
Im from NJ. Newark NJ at that. Im planning on going to DC because Of Georgetown University. What are your opinions of that school? Is it easy to get a job at the white house around there?
Dont go to south east DC, north east DC,pg county boarder from DC(marlow heights)AKA THE GETTO and some parts of Montgomery county.
Many of these areas are rapidly changing from the stereotype mentioned. I would be careful in ALL parts of the city. We we robbed during the day in “NW”. So it doesn’t matter. Stay alert at all times in ALL areas of town.
@@rapboutit623 Ignore this persons statements...this is another example of ignorant fear mongering.
@@HeathandTracyTV exactly...that's from not knowing stereotype fear mongering.
I was in bright wood 1400$ a month. It was steep but I could NEVER do roommates. Awesome video tho!

This past winter was brutal
Yes it’s like that sometimes! Thanks for watching!
Which one do you like better there or Georgia
It’s close, but DC...
This is true
you folks did a fine job rising your daughter!! She has a very good head on her shoulders. My dad always said to me you only get one shot at raising children you don’t get to go back and try a do over at least not with the same child lol

I'm surpised you didn't mention traffic.
We lived in the ATL, traffic in the DMV doesn’t phase us. Thanks for watching!
Also the damn metro keeps getting higher
+asianwweblissfan truth😦. Thanks so much for watching !
Not that much...
How bad is the driving inwashington dc?
It has its peak times to stay away from certain thoroughfares. It’s pretty bad during the week but manageable on the weekends. When we go during the week we try to leave the car at the hotel and stay in a walkable area. We also use Lyft and Uber a lot.
HeathandTracyTV good to know, thanks.
Terrible traffic
Lots of construction and road work during non rush hrs....but a lot of the time not bad at all.Its Nothern Virginia that stays bad.
Actually it's San Jose, CA and Boston, Mass. The average rent for a one bedroom apartment is $2500/mo...
We were actually stating that DC is the most expensive to live in. Not just real estate. The cities you mentioned that have SLIGHTLY higher real estate PRICES actually pay more for the same occupations. Service/government and corporate. When you take the ratio’s of net income towards your life.. ie transportation, food, clothing, shelter. WDC is more. If you move to NYC or CA you income will rise, assisting with the DELTA. Keep in mind the largest employer in DC is the Government and most of the employees live in the area NOT DC proper. The DMV is more reasonable than NYC an The larger West coast cities but not DC proper. I know that the colleagues that work for the company that I worked for pays the CA and NY employees at least 10k more for the same position just because they reside in those states. So the warning is still corrected you will
Not be paid the same. Not disagreeing just clarifying the statement to not mislead and help others watching understand. Thanks for watching!
Cute video
Thank you!
We spend that much here..I promise...so what's the jobs like?
Sooo many jobs here. They don’t pay as much as West coast or larger cities which is becoming a problem, but you should be able to find one.
yo she your daughter is like a ROBOT MONEY SAVER SHE has got it down HEY GUYS YOU taught her so so well.
Someone has to teach and pass it on.
The most DC thing about this video is an affluent black family out to lunch giving financial advice to strangers...this is the culture here...like you want to see the black american dream come to the city
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this, I am a young gay male with a partner defintely considering relocating to DC.
YOUR daughter is so funny
Love her.
If you work in dc find somewhere to live in prince George's county md or Montgomery county they both border D.C. and its cheaper and nicer far less crime and you can catch the metro into D.C. from there
Get advice! Especially near the metro. Thanks for watching!

In the beginning of the video she said she lived in the ’hood, but the neighborhood was changing. Is that because of more gentrification, or is the neighborhood just getting better (like community building, etc)? I know gentrification is a big grievance in D.C., but I was curious about this circumstance.
+Anaisja Henry gentrification...

HeathandTracyTV Hey Heath and Tracy. Welcome to Washington. I too migrated here from
Georgia 😊 Go Bulldogs !! Atlanta is not the Atlanta I knew anymore, it has grown and change so much since the Olympics. I been in Washington for over 3 decades and during that time you betcha the cost of living here has increased significantly. Infact the city radically changes like every 4 or 5 years. Coming from Georgia winter ❄️ is cold but not compared to Chicago or Minnesota or upstate New York. I think people here overreact to the threat of a snowstorm. Heath I don't believe Washington, DC is the most expensive city in the United States. Y'all might wanna do a little bit more research. I'm sure In some cases you will find DC slightly less expensive than New York City or San Francisco. I don't know of any other city that will literally pay people to sit around all day. This town is saturated with law firms and governmental agencies (job security) that don't require much training or experience and a lot of them pay very well. What I love most about Washington is that it is diverse but unfortunately separate, conservative ave pretentious. It's international and cosmopolitan and small enough to maneuver without relying on a car or public transportation. Lawd knows traffic here is horrendous. The metro here sucks major ass and that ain't no lie. D C has a rich history and culture that I'm sorry to say a lot people here don't take the time to expose themselves to 😭or take advantage of. Hold on to yourselves and each other. Too many people come here and become corrupted.
