    Hey Nick, good to see someone that understands why and how liners float explaining it on youtube. As an owner of an inground pool company for over 35 years we've seen this a lot! A few tips for you, one you were lucky and just pumping the water out didn't leave any wrinkles but oftentimes that's not the case and pushing the liner around with an algae brush or something soft on your vacuum pole can help assist it. I also heard you mention a sump pump in one corner, we've actually done those but one caveat is sometimes when we get heavy rains the power goes out and boom, there goes the liner. Not a problem if it goes back without wrinkles but in some cases you'll get a bunch of material where it doesn't belong. Something you should consider if you have a relief lower than the pool is a passive vent, essentially it's a wall fitting with a mesh screen that goes through the wall behind the liner, when the water rises it allows a path of escape and does't require power. Of course it only works where you can have some pitch to the pipe and an outlet on the side of a hill. Another think we've done if the pool has a solid floor is pump water behind a liner to lift it and remove wrinkles without draining the pool. So many people cause liners to float by pumping off covers in the spring time near the pool or taking water out of the pool before a heavy rain storm, totally the wrong thing to do but it's very hard to explain to the common person how this all works (same as displacement when snow goes on a pool cover, we get about 300 calls every spring for water loss because of that) Have a great day!

      Thanks so much for the feedback. The key has been (as you've described), NOT to drain the pool at all in the spring. Haven't had a problem since. I do really like the idea of the passive vent. I am assuming this is similar to what you see on fiber glass pools so they don't pop out of the ground like a boat! I've seen some awfully devastating photos of this sort of situation on the internet!

    • @BobsPoolService
      @BobsPoolService Před 2 lety +1

      @@NickOz Yeah, that's KEY but few people understand the concept. I've not only seen fiberglass pools float but even gunite and cement ones totally popped out of the ground! Once that happens the pool is ruined, pipes are all broken, draining a cement pool without opening the reliefs in the bottom can be a 75,000 dollar mistake.

    This video saved our summer!! For months we’ve had a floating liner that has continued to worsen. We have a container pool so we knew it wasn’t ground water... but had no idea how to get the water out from behind the liner. One tiny patch and this technique and its good as new!!

    Hey you rock. I live in Upsate, NY about an hour from Canada so we have these issues and we got 10 inches of rain in the last 2 days so my liner floated and I had a bubble in my pool. I had one of these pumps because of other issues and it worked great. Thank you so much for posting this! I subscribed to your channel as well. Will check out other projects you have posted. Cheers to Canadian beer!

    I would get horrible ground water behind my liner causing 3-5 ft sections to float. Well i suppose i allowed it to get to the horrible state, it didnt just happen over night. Anyways, by accident one day, i over filled the pool. Wasnt overflowing yet but it was over the skimmer; and the ground water disappeared & liner situated back tight like magic.

      You will need to dig down 4' next to the pool closest to wherever your grade slopes the greatest so the water can be discharged without coming back. If I go a head with this I'll be renting a mini-excavator to dig out a hole about 5' away from my pool's edge. I will also dig out a trench for the drain pipe. There is video on the subject here. czcams.com/video/r980exBfzb0/video.html

    Great topic....I am just across the border in Michigan. I've been dealing with this problem for 17 years. I asked the guy that put the pool in, do we need a drainage system? He repeatedly told me no....bone head pool guy. I had a 3' Honda trash pump on the side of my pool every year...sometimes twice a year. it was super annoying un-clipping the liner and then getting hot water to snap the liner back into place. I would reduce the 3" suction on my pump to 1" so that it would fit behind the liner. I would also lubricate the hose or you will not be able to remove it because of all of the pressure from the water. The liner would always snap back into place/no wrinkles (27ml thick liner). I had hundreds, maybe thousands of gallons of water behind my liner. After many years of this problem and many pool guys wanting to rip out all of my landscaping, I found a product on the internet that I believed in (Alameda Pools in Virginia Beach - Drain-Flo system). It is a 4" x 2' stainless steel/resin plastic product with perferated holes in it that installs from the pool side (galvanized pool wall has to be cut/notched) to relieve the pressure. This thin piece fits behind the liner. We are in the process of finishing the project now. We cut some of the concrete and installed a huge outdoor sump pump. Backfilling it with (3) yards of 3/4 inch stone and that should do it. It was the toughest dig of my guys life. All clay, took (2) days and there were utility lines everywhere. I am also replacing the liner (14 years old). I would not pump the water behind the liner back into the pool. Not the cleanest. I documented my problem and I will publish it when done, #wateralwayswins

      Hi Anthony, please update us on your progress. I was going to pump the water outside of the pool, but it was crystal clear, so didn't see any harm. I got lucky with the small amount I had to pump out. Great suggestion on lubricating the hose, it was definitely hard to pull it out. It was worse last year and I used a drill pump - took 4 hours. I've also seen people use their pool pump with 2" flex hose to do this job, but it seemed like a pain in the ass to me. I've heard about the drain-flo system. If my issues persist next year I will be digging out a sump pit 4' next to the shallow end of the pool and installing a vertical 12" culvert pipe with a sump pump with a 20' run of drain pipe to the low part of my property. When I built the pool, I back filled with a lot of clear stone due to the high water table, so my hope is that the sump will take care of most of the issues for me.

    • @anthonyjosephdickow6160
      @anthonyjosephdickow6160 Před 4 lety +1

      @@NickOz Besides lubricating the hose, I used 1" spa line (very strong and rigid). I chamfered the end so that it would not have any sharp edges on it and so that the pump would not lose prime. With the strong pump that i was using anything weak and the hose would collapse on its self.

      @@NickOz Hey guys, I have the same issue with my pool. I have the 4' pipe with a pump that runs every hour for 1 minute to completely empty it. Problem is, the liner is mushy all around the corners of the pool. I also have a wrinkle that has formed on the ramp going into the deep end. If I put my foot on the wall to floor edge, I am estimating at least 3 inches of play. I am hoping and assuming that if I get all the ground water out from behind the liner, it will hopefully pull the wrinkle. As for removing the liner from the coping, I have concerns of putting it back so I haven't tried it. I was thinking a permanent tube run behind the liner with with an access above the water line. Not the most attractive, but perhaps easiest.

    • @michaeldundas8245
      @michaeldundas8245 Před 4 lety

      How on earth do you get the liner out of that track. I can see what holds it at my pool steps but looking for something that won’t puncture as I pry it off the track, like a bicycle tire lever or rounded screwdriver etc.

    • @NickOz
      @NickOz  Před 4 lety

      @@sebastiandimartino7600 How far away from the pool is your 4' pipe? How high does the water in the pipe get in relation to the level of the water in the liner? Technically, if you get your ground water level below the level of the liner, hydrostatic pressure should suck the liner back against the sidewalls and the bottom of the pool - It should be nice and tight. If this doesn't work, it might be because the higher water level may have sucked muddy sludge between the sidewalls/pool bottom and the liner which doesn't allow that water to drain properly to the pipe. Maybe try adjusting the pump in your pipe to run more often keeping the water level as low as possible.

    • @NickOz
      @NickOz  Před 4 měsíci +1

      the hydrostatic pressure is uniform behind the liner all around the pool. It doesn't matter where you put the hose as long as its below the water level thats inside the pool liner. I only has a hose that was about 2' below the edge of the pool.
