There is what’s called a bloom on eggs that protects them until you wash them. Back in the day my grandma kept eggs in a basket on the table.

Hi Chris, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and Jo.
Thanks for taking us shopping. When I had my business and lived there, Walter Mart was where I often shopped at. I miss the seasonal fruits.
And about the eggs not being refrigerated, that is correct. In the olden days, eggs were not washed. There's a thin layer on eggs called "bloom" which is a natural way of preserving eggs up to 6 weeks with no refrigeration. We have over 400 egg laying chickens and we sell our eggs unwashed which is what most people want. We clean off the poop, if any. We keep our chicken's bedding clean.

Nice vid CFC. Going to the grocery is much the same as it was in the US except I don't see anyone busted by security for trying to steal here in the Philz unlike California. Use a calc or divide by ~ 50 to figure out how many dollars you are spending :)
Sometimes we hit a similar type of grocer instead of the big mall grocer for dried clear noodles, dried mushrooms, larger containers of ice cream. My wife prefers the open market for meat and veggies but sometimes you need something in a pinch and all of these stores have Filipino staples. I can't find sour cream, or non- irradiated fresh milk anywhere (understandably) but I recently found a Yogurt vendor in the big mall. But they have real salted butter and Philly cream cheese in many stores. I use the Nestle powered milk for my coffee creamer so her nephews trudge over daily to make some milk for themselves. I think westerners coming to any reasonably sized city in the Philz can find most of what they want or a close approximation as far as food items for cooking. I do have to order some favored over the counter meds and toiletries off of Lazada for home delivery because they are not sold in any of our stores which is fine.

I think first time visitors to the Phil might be shocked getting off the plane in Cebu, i think fir the first week maybe stay near IT Park if you have the money before getting more used to your surroundings. But, unless your wealthy, i would try to move to a way cheaper place.

Not financially, but some guideance on best way to navigate once I get there. I'm 64 yrs. old, and going through divorce right now. I got into teaching late so don't have full retirirement, but enough to live there or in SE Asia. I heard you give some reasons why you left US and I totally agree with you. I wonder if bagels are common over there. I try to stay away from bread and other refined carbs but I do indulge in a cinnamon-raisin bagel every now and then. Ya, those snacks that wreaks havoc on one's system and cause the usual chronic dis-eases. That's a good deal for a 1.12 kg (2.5 lb) of powdered milk at US$7.65...assuming that it's not laden with fillers and other undesirable stuff. I actually prefer powdered milk for coffee, hot chocolate, oatmeal, etc. as it doesn't go bad; no point in getting fresh milk that sour in a few days. Why not just get pure instant coffee without the added sugar? Are ready-to-serve (washed) packaged salads (cabbage, kale, Brussels sprouts, arugula, spinach, etc. or a combo thereof...you know, the good stuff) available at larger supermarkets like they are in the US? "Sorry. Out of stock, sir."😁 The savings got nullified by the 12% sales tax. That's pretty steep...much higher than those of the most expensive cities in the US not to mention that many if not all States do not tax groceries. Just sayin'.

Western produce are expensive because they have to be imported......duties & taxes. So, don't expect those to be cheap. You must be able to adopt to the local brand if you really want to save $$$$$$$$. I'll give you a tip and you can save hundreds of dollars by just going to a public market for fresh fruits, vegetables, and fish then the meat at the groceries. You can ask your partner to go to the wet market if you can't stand the smell of the fish section while you shop at the groceries for the meat and others that you can't find in the public market.
