- We had a birthday party for our son Quest.At this party a couple of children, 12 year olds, said a few cuss words as they were playing in a basketball tournament. This took us by surprise and also sparked todays topic: are kids getting too comfortable cussing in front of adults these days? Lets talk about it!

I’m Gen X and my daughter is a Millennial. One of her friends called me by my first name as if we are peers. That’s an all around no-no.. When I was growing up I had to “put a handle” on adults names. My mom and grandma’s friends were “Auntie”.. We are definitely living in a new era.
While working in my yard I heard 2 young black teens cuss my white male neighbor out for telling them to stop walking through his back yard every day. He was not out of line at all in the way he spoke to them. When they made it to the street and he went inside I told them they knew they were wrong. They gave me a yes ma'am and took another path after that. Kids respect who they choose to respect.
Kids respect adults who give and demand it in return.
And that’s the problem with our kids… no real parents so they have no self-respect

As an educator I am telling since parenting styles have changed our jobs have become so hard. I wish we could go back to having higher standards as a collective. Also I am 37 and still don’t curse in front of my mother the deaconess😂. She may be 70 but her back hand is stronger baby.
And to co-sign this comment I am 36 and decided to retire from education because not only are many parents not receptive to other adults correcting their children it is also not supported much by public and charter school administration departments. Black communities in the past esteemed respect but that viewpoint is crumbling. It’s very sad to see.

As a grown 45 year old I try not to curse and I don’t curse in front of my own mom so I’m not letting my kid or any kid curse. It’s about respect
I’m 47. I’ll never forget how eloquently my Grandma would speak ~ very slow, quiet but confident. Always smiling ~ you would think she just gave you a compliment you didn’t quite understand ~ no ma’am!! She just gave you the business and never once said anything distasteful! It was truly an art.

I am 74 years old and hear kids, young people and adults cursing all the time but if I say something they will curse me out (it’s happen to me before). Television, movies social media and their parents and relatives ALLOW it.

I’m 55 and I remember not being able to say, “you are a lie” or the word “fool”!
My momma didn’t play that. My siblings and I heard her or other adults curse but you just couldn’t say “bad words”.
They didn’t have to explain it to you, it was just what it was🙌🏾

I totally agree. I'm 61 and I still don't like to hear a child call someone a lie. We had to say you're telling a "story ". I don't expect children to say that now, but my grandchildren can say that's not true. But you a lie coming out of a child's mouth, is disrespectful to me. As the elders used to say "give a child an inch and they will take a mile". It's true, a child will try you sooner or later and if you don't have control over your household, you're going to be in a world of trouble.
I'm 32 and couldn't DARE say the word lie around my grandad. He's from the country and "lie' seemed worse than the other bad words! Ohhhh and NEVA EVA call him a lie! Haha. Now I don't like hearing kids say lie. They don't understand! LOL
I know that's right, Chance. I don't know how NOT to do it! I was standing in line at the store the other day and little boy walked in front of me and didn't say a word...he did it again and before I knew it, I said, "say excuse me Sweetie!" It takes a village!
2006-current I’ve taught male inmates GED and Life Skills as a volunteer. No such thing as a slip up, depends on situations , I’m grown. YOU CAN CONTROL YOUR LANGUAGE. Those men who are every kind of criminal by conviction……. ARE NOT permitted to use profanity and get caught! Respect and self control is the goal. Write ups, isolation, canceled visitation are just a few of the consequences for cursing violations. Sooo if that’s expected of grown men, we can do better if we want to. I believe our goal should be to practice showing up in the world as your best self. What comes out of us is what’s in us.
I feel like as people we've fallen so far out with the value of respect and how valuable it is, not just as a kid but also adult but in all facets of life that bit of self-control can go so far in other forms of self-control

I remember in my childhood the adults would be mindful a child was present and knew they were going to say a bad word they would say--"cover your ears". Don't see that no more!!!
Teeth, gums, and throat would be missing if I EVER cussed at my parents or any adult!😂 Kids now disrespect adults and some parents co-sign their behaviors. Just pitiful.

My dad was from Ga and one time he heard my brother say “lie” and boy did he get a talkin to! So if lie was a curse we dare not say a 4 letter cuss word! I’m 67 and will not even say lie or cuss in front of my 90 yr old father! Respect was given and received! Some of the children today have parents almost their age who curse, drink and smoke with their children! They justify it by saying oh I want them to do it with me at home so they don’t get hurt outside doing it! Or they are trying to be friends with the kids! I don’t agree with any of it, I’m not giving my kids a pass to do DRUGS, than they will do anything that comes their way! Teach your children to be respectful and to say NO when they need to! Adults are supposed to be their child’s first role model! We need a happy healthy respectful relationship with the youth! I can think of many things to do with children that doesn’t involve DRUGS or cussin! Yes I agree with Tab n Chance, parents don’t want to parent their children, it’s hard dedication and continuous work! But so worth it!!! Be well and be grateful you have children to be parented! I’m 53 years old and I feel uncomfortable hearing grown adults cuss around their parents. I don’t even like to see drinking beer, liquor with the parents. There are just some things we should not do. I do believe it’s a cultural thing.

Chance you hit the nail on the head. I'm a HS teacher. This is MOST DEFINITELY a problem. To add, I teach English. From the first day to our last day of school, you will use vocabulary and elevated language to articulate your thoughts and feelings. Profanity/cussing is blatant disrespect and it will NOT BE TOLERATED. Some people want the title of parent, but not the responsibility.
My parents would say, stay in a child’s place and whenever they weren’t around we better act as if they are in the room. Because we never knew everyone they knew, so we would be scared of being told on. I’m in my 40s and ain’t no way I’m cussing in front of my parents or anyone who can be them, an aunt, uncle or grandparents. No ma’am!!!😂
This episode was much needed. Those of us who value respect and the authority as parents, that GOD has entrusted to us, is slipping away. My son is 30, and he knows better because of what was established as a child. I will also say that it's ok for our children to hold us accountable as well. As adults, we should learn as adults how to better express ourselves without all the filth. Difficult habits to break, but it can be done. After all, the Bible says the children will lead them. 😊
I try to live in away that my kids can follow. I display the behavior that I want them to display. If I get mad I don't cuss, I try not to lose my cool but I try to practice what I preach. I have to count myself down, evaluate the situation and choose my response rather than just react. Our generation grew up with do as I say not as I do - I hate that saying because its a double standard to me it tells the child I'm grown so I can do whatever I want without consequences But we know there are consequences. It tells the child that the adult can be angry but the child can't. So I decided to be what I want to see. Don't get me wrong I've had my moments but by the grace of God I strive everyday to show them how to do life better. This is a great topic.
Thank you for this discussion. I ask my husband all the time as to what is going on with these young children cursing and adults being okay with it. I am 63 and I still don’t curse in front of my mom or kids. Somewhere the line has to be drawn.

I loved this discussion. I agree. It’s out of control. I’m a middle school teacher and the cursing is HORRIBLE. Lord help me to continue to hold them responsible 😢.
We need more parents like them! Especially strong fathers!
I’m 26 w/ a 3 year old & I 100% agree. There may be a lack of parenting in this generation and a desire to have our kids reach their full potential at every age. Simply because we know now that kids are capable of so much. However, we can’t give them the leniency this early to say whatever they want or to talk like an adult. There still needs to be a level of respect kept so there needs to be a balance. Some parents aren’t setting up those boundaries because they want to steer away from “traditional morals” so bad.

The way some of these parents make their children rush to "grow up" tells the real story.
They want to use the kids as staff to cook, clean, and work for them so the parents can relax (I'm not talking about tweens/ teens).
Or they want to have a "built-in-bestie". To talk about mature subjects that young minds are not ready for at all.
They also want them with weaves, lip gloss, adult twin outfits, manicures, pedicures, over the top birthday parties, I can go on and on…I’m like what they going to do when they become 17/18…let a child enjoy their childhood innocently for as long as they can.

I’m 63, I still don’t curse in front of certain people. When I was in middle school/high school I cursed around my friends and peers, if I thought I thought I was grown enough to curse in front of an adult, I would get the snot knocked out of me! Then I would go home and get the rest of the snot knocked out of me. The kids today have no home training. None at all!!

I’m so glad to hear someone else speak on this topic because I have been asking my kids about this a long time now. My oldest is 32 and I noticed kids cursing when I attended his games and I asked him what is up with that. There are all kinds of parents and grand parents in the stands, and kids just cursing in front of adults? Where do they do that at? when I was younger there’s no WAY I would ever curse in front of ANY adults. He said mom times have changed this is how kids talk. I said unacceptable. I heard one of his friends curse in my house once he was in college and I asked him do you curse in front of your mom and he said yes and I said well we don’t curse in front of moms in this house. This has gotten out of control

We had to say telling a story or caboose, that’s if we were explaining something to them. It was a 5 girls and 1 boy in my family and I’m the youngest. What I see today just saddens my heart. Tab and Chance, I want to thank you for your content...always real, funny and engaging! As a person that worked in the field of education for over 20 years, I have witnessed the lack of respect that children have for adults as well as themselves. I agree that respect must be earned, unfortunately, very few parents are sending their best children to engage with others on a daily basis. My mind is blown by the way children speak and behave these days...especially in the presence of adults. We have to continue to pray over these babies... like it or not, they are our future.

I think one of the main shifts came from generation X where we would not curse in front of our parents or other adults. The generations start having children a the younger ages so their children was basically growing up with them. Children raising children, so unfortunately the children were exposed to a lot of adult things early on. They got to see and hear too much way too soon, and it was funny because they were being raised by a child that happened to be a mom. At 14 and 17 your still a kid with a lot of maturing to do, so raising a child when you still have a child like mentality, and unfortunately its being passed down to the next generation. Most of us generation X are grandparents and great grandparents.
I agree with Tab and Chance. My husband and I lead by example and do not curse in front of our children. I don't even allow my teens to blast music with cursing in it, in my home because we have younger children and I feel it is disrespectful to me, them and our house. Great conversation as always!

Agreed. I’m a teacher and correcting children has gotten so hard because parents don’t want you to say anything , but your child is in my care most of the day and I’m supposed to just let them run wild and act grown? School settings are getting more tense because of this.
I think this is an excellent conversation. I think there are so many layers though.
1. I've been in the room with adults countless times of all generations cussing like it's nothing. Angry and cussing or just talking and cussing. I have to get up and move or say something about it. I don't always feel comfortable confronting them because people are insane these days. It may not be a conversation, it may be they're armed and I don't know it.
2. Social media has destroyed and is destroying childhood. DESTROYING. It adds to this epidemic of no morals, no respect for others or elders. I'm white and you will NEVER hear me cuss in front of my parents or grandparents, or anyone. My dad cusses like it's normal speak, I've always hated it. It's disrespectful to me as a person, as his kid.
3. It's disrespectful. Period. Not even just to elders, it's disrespectful to everyone. It's not just a word, words are powerful.

Let’s be for real here, it’s all about how you were raised and what you were exposed to as a child. I grew up in a house hold where the adults were actually parents and exposed me to things that I do as an adult. At that time, I knew where my place was as a child and I wasn’t trying to step over those boundaries. Yes, I did say some things that I wasn’t supposed to say, but I never did it around my parents. Whether people realize it or not, you may pick up bad habits that has been passed down without even realizing it until someone exposes it to you.

I see coaches cursing at 10 year old boys, and the parents don't say anything. I was furious!!! Therefore, many of the kids mimic what's being done to them.

I had to rewatch this with my three younger children who love to curse in private. 🤦🏾♀️. We needed this video. I never cursed infront of adults growing up and I rarely curse now. My momma use to say when I was a kid I loved cursing. And mine are the same.

Discipline and teaching begins in the home and continues in their schools, but when homes and school systems are broken and permissive, some children will mirror that.
Discipline begins at home (period). Kids learn their foundation from home before they even come to school. Teachers bear the repercussions of students who are not taught appropriate behaviors at home.

Thank you both for such an on time topic. I just had this conversation with my twenty one year old granddaughter. I don't tolerate the crusing. even at that age. Kiddingly she continued to use language that I did not approve of, so I disconnected a call, and I have not taken her calls since. It's been about three days now, which is a very long time for us to go without speaking. I really want her to take this seriously and know that when I say I feel disrespected,That is exactly what I mean.

I was a 2nd grade teacher, and they were talking about porn, but they were calling it porm. When I realized what the boy was trying to tell the class, what he saw in the hotel he and his family were staying in because they were homeless, I had to immediately stop the class and go get the male principal. A lot of what kids say, see, and do today is the parent's fault!

I really appreciate yall doing these. I'm a younger parent and even when I hear kids cursing I'm slightly taken aback. And I WANT to address it but don't know how. Especially these days with how other younger parents raise their children and the internet influence. But THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for this and the advice. such a good discussion. I worked in a bookstore some years back. A young boy ran from the door to where I was standing at the customer service desk. I approached him and asked him to please stop running in the store. Very nice like. 1min later the mom walks up and approaches me and says I will speak to my own child regarding running. She wasn't a Karen. She, as well as I am, was a woman of color. It took all of me not to clapback. If your child ran ahead of you, apparently you did not tell him to stop running and by the time she got to where I was at, he could've knocked over a couple of people. Entitlement is real.
We couldn't even say hell or liar. Those were considered cuss words also. I literally had to hold myself back from smacking my 7 yo in the mouth for saying hell. I did tell him with love not to use that word again.
My father wouldn't let me say 'pissed' or 'liar'...ohhh wee

Chance, you are correct. At 62, I NEVER ever used that language in front of my parents nor any elders. These parents are setting their children up to lose out on opportunities at all ages because they do not want to parent.

It’s indeed a problem. I work with young children and they are very proficient with the profanity…I’ve seen them cussing at church too. Yes, words are indeed powerful. Life and death rests with the power of our tongues. Thanks for this discussion ❤🙏🏽👏🏽
