    I love how everyone is so surprised at how dark Roald Dahl books are. I love how he's not afraid to bring the darker elements to his children's books. I think its less noticeable because its always paired with a happy ending. And his autobiographical works are awesome for little ones as well.

    What I like about this film version vs the book, is that Aunt Spiker and Aunt Sponge do not die from getting run over by the peach and that they make their way to New York in the final act. While it logically doesn’t make sense how they got there, their arrival gives James a great opportunity to show his growth and character development. As he arrived all alone in a new city, he needed to confront his fears and move on from them. I love that he stood up to Aunt Spiker and Aunt Sponge. They did not show him love. The aunts got what they deserved.

    • @robbiewalker2831
      @robbiewalker2831 Před dnem

      I’d argue it’s an improvement over the non-existent Slugworth subplot from “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory”. Slugworth was non-relevant to the main plot of the Charlie book, but Aunts Sponge and Spiker in James and the Giant Peach are plot relevant, because they made James’ life miserable; so James telling off his horrible aunts, that are like the stepfamily from Cinderella, was more earned in the movie and it paid off.

  • @philiphamel8504
    @philiphamel8504 Před 2 lety +42

    So... my memory of the book is vague. (It has been close to 17 years since I've last read it, after all.) But I'm pretty sure the Rhino was just a real rhino that had escaped from the zoo, and in a freak accident during its rampage, James' parents were caught in the chaos. It didn't eat them. They were just victims of an accident

    • @choryllis6646
      @choryllis6646 Před 2 lety +16

      I have the book with me, and the exact line is, "Then, one day, James's mother and father went to London to do some shopping, and there a terrible thing happened. Both of them suddenly got eaten up (in full daylight, mind you, and on a crowded street) by an enormous angry rhinoceros which had escaped from the London Zoo." And it never gets mentioned again.
      I was always confused that a rhino would eat them, but writing it out now makes me think... James is 4 years old when this happens...What if it was a criminal escaping from jail? People refer to criminals in derogatory ways (he's an animal, an absolute beast) The zoo is a metaphor for jail and the "rhino" was an inmate making a break for it, and killed James's parents trying to flee the cops? Certainly it's hard enough to break it to a 4 year old their parents are gone, so I can't imagine too many people who go into exact detail about it...so maybe James began to overhear what happened to them without every fully knowing. "Can you believe it? That animal killed them!" "How did it get out from behind bars?" "He used a knife to take care of the guards, and then stampeded through the town!"
      But it could also just be an actual rhino escaped and the parents died in the chaos. Yours is probably much more plausible.

Also, The Glowworm is a much more important character in the book, having way more lines and stuff. I guess they just wanted less characters to animate, which I totally get.

    I saw this movie first time when I was about 10 or 11 yrs old, the "My Name is James" song made me cry. I'm not typically a very emotional person during movies but my dad had passed away a few years before and it just really got to me. I enjoyed the adventure and they use to play this movie alot on the Disney channel so I watched it quite a few times. I think it feels more nostalgic for those who've seen it as a kid and it's not quite the same watching as an adult for me. It's a real shame about the copyright issue as I really wanted to see your ParaNorman reaction (I love that movie) but I understand. It's very strange rules with youtube and they sometimes make no sense at all as some people will get their vids claimed while others don't, it seriously feels like a roll of the dice.

    I always suspected that the animated segment of the plot was James's interpretation of him finally escaping his aunt's place. Given that he could only make friends with bugs coupled with the names he'd been called over the years, he probably collected bugs and made up names and features for them. Also things like the mechanical shark producing fish heads is like the aunts following him and the very slopey waves he drew earlier looks exactly like the animated waves.

    When you said "All your crimes are coming to light, aunts," that reminds me of lot of that phrase from the Dhar Mann episodes, "What happens in the dark always comes to light". And also an observation I would love to share with you is an observation that I've made for so many years about the scene when James's insect friends come to his age when Spiker and Sponge we're trying to kill him. That reminds me a lot of the climatic scene at the end of Home Alone 2 when Harry and Marv were getting ready to kill Kevin but then the pigeon lady came to Kevin's aide. I mean there's lots of relevance to it. Spiker and Sponge freaking out when the bugs arrive reminds me a lot of when Marv was freaking out when he saw the pigeons in the tree. And when they get tied up and spun around reminds me a lot of Harry and Marv panicking when the pigeon started to swarm them and when Marv screams hysterically. And then the police officer seeing proof that Spiker and Sponge were evil to James just like when the cops read the note that Harry and Marv wanted to kill Kevin. And then Spiker and Sponge get hauled off to jail just like Harry and Marv

He was only 4 when this happened...can you imagine how hard it is to explain to someone that young that their parents are dead, and then you get the question of, "why?" I think that too many people around James just didn't know how to explain it to him, so he overheard them calling the escaped convict as, "an animal escaped from behind bars and had a knife." And James, being 4, turned that into a rhino.

    All books by Roald Dahl do have dark humour and elements (for instance, in one of his poems, where he parodies classic fairy tales, Little Red Riding Hood shoots the wolf from a pistol and then wears "a lovely furry wolfskin coat", but later adds a bag made of pig skin - guess where that came from...). And at first the giant fruit was to be a cherry, but a peach was chosen because it is "larger, juicier and splashes louder"

    My mom HATED this movie. She didn't like how many deviations it took from the book (she was most vocal about replacing the Cloud People with the Skeleton Pirates). I got to read it the year after it came out.
    Fun fact: a coworker of mine actually got to "meet" Roald Dahl. He did a lecture at her elementary school, and the teachers told the kids not to talk to him at all because he apparently didn't like children.

    They actually used Jack Skellington from Nightmare before Christmas as the pirate Captain, same puppet and heads
    (Fun fact, you can find two of Jack's heads in Coraline and Beetlejuice as well, in Coraline it's hidden in the yolk of an egg the Other Mother cracks open for Coraline's breakfast and in Beetlejuice it's at the tip of the tent that Beetlejuice wears as a hat in one scene)

    I wonder if J.K. Rowling took some inspiration for Harry Potter from this movie. There's so many similarities between the two. A little boy, whose parents were murdered by a dark, sinister creature/individual. Little boy grows up with hateful relatives--one tall and thin, one short and fat--who treat him like a slave, and do nothing for themselves. Then one day something magical happens to the boy (Harry Potter has the snake in the zoo escape, James has a giant peach grow in his own backyard). A strange man tells the little boy about magic. The boy goes off on an adventure with a group of friends that have creative and amazing personalities. They fight against monsters and enemies with skulls for faces. And in the end, the boy faces his fears in one final showdown with the evil creature/individual. He wins the fight, but gets hurt/killed and is resurrected. He reaches the conclusion of his story and everyone lives their lives happily ever after.
    A bit too on the nose? A bit convenient bit of storytelling?

    • @AngelusBrady
      @AngelusBrady Před 9 měsíci

      More likely from the book considering that came out in 1961. The movie came out in 1996 and the first Harry Potter book was 1997, I don't think there would have been enough time for JK Rowling to have watched the movie, write the book, get proof-read, edited, then find a publisher in that short amount of time.
