Mac OS 9 is the last 'classic' operating system before OS X was released. In this video I run through some fun reasons to install it, and how to actually get all of the software required in order to set up OS 9 on your Mac, Windows or Linux based machine!

I still have my first OG blue iMac, as well as both G4 & G5 PowerPC desktops that (I came across abandoned) tucked in my apartment closet. Haven't done anything with them yet.
I also have a 2008 iMac I use as a musical noise maker, and for casual retro game emulation (NES/SNES/N64)
I am actually funny enough typing this on a 2013 iMac (i74770, GTX750m gpu,16gb ram, 256 NVME OS drive, 1tb external SSD) that I found "parts only" for $50!
Did a complete tear down and refurbished/upgrade with $40 in parts.
    Currently running Catalina.
Fantastic computer for basic Audio Production and light to mid video editing IMO.
    Really dig your channel man.
Hope you are safe and well.

Will drives mounted in the Home system show up in the emulated system? I have some old Mac OS 7.5-era floppies that will not mount in a modern OS.

I got a IIcx here (I think it has OS 7.6??... definitely 7.5), but the last time I tried starting it up (~15 years ago), I got the power-on sound and the green light, but no video (unless the monitor needed an adaptor I didn't have). I do not have the technical expertise to recap anything. I'm sure the mobo needs it. It might need new PRAM too, or maybe a new battery.
I wish I knew someone in the Phoenix area who could look this thing over with me and diagnose its state.
I'd also like to find out if there's a way to test that HD and see if it still works. Would a modern Mac even be able to "see" it?
    * Does this SheepShaver run in Big Sur?
    * Can you transfer files between Big Sur and OS 9?
    * Can you save files to a different format that can open in Big Sur?

In another video, it had you give the Mac OS 9 1gb of space in the Sheepsaver. Can I go back and change it to add more? Some apps I have are around 500 MB

Great video! I like Mac OS 9, though it would freeze often when I use it with older Mac games, etc... so frustrating... When I get a chance I'd like to use Sheepshaver to use it again, though I do have some older Macs that could run it native...

It is quite fun to get going. It also feels like it is a bit more stable in the very latest release, 9.2.2. I also have an iBook that I play old games on every now and then, the trackpad is still better than most Windows machines today!

My favourite computer is my 1999 Lombard Powerbook, which runs a "fan-made" version of Mac OS 9.2.2 with the latest graphics drivers. I play games from my childhood on the Lombard, including Bugdom, Diablo (I finally beat the game a couple of years ago), Escape Velocity and Sentinels of Ceth, and I also really like its simpler, more straightforward version of iTunes.
Overall, it's an extremely solid, reliable computer, especially with its 128GB Compact Flash card "SSD", through which it boots in a relatively snappy 1 minute, 20 seconds (compared to 2 minutes, 10 seconds with a mechanical drive). It freezes occasionally, but mainly when mounting disc images through Toast (thankfully, I found a great workaround using the Virtual CD/DVD Utility).
I've boosted it to 512MB of RAM, added two extra USB ports via a PCMCIA card, applied modern silver thermal paste to the processor, I bought a VST Firewire card (but rarely use it), and I installed a slot-loading optical drive taken from a G5 iMac.
I just ordered a second-generation iPod Classic, which was the last iPod to be compatible with Mac OS 9. I'm really looking forward to using it as my Lombard's dedicated iPod (just as my green iPod Mini is my G4 Cube's iPod). :D
