Checking Actual Heat Output Of A Rooftop Unit Using Testo Smart Probes

My pal Jason Rende has kindly reminded me that the discharge probe should be out of line of site of the heat exchanger if at all possible. The placement of 605i sensor in the supply may have messed with the final result. Although, the method and appliction still remains the same.
Checking actual heat output, in BTU/H, of any system has become very easy to do this day in age with tools like Testo Smart probes in conjunction with the Smart Probes app. In the video, I check system air flow and entire system performance using a 405i and two 605i Smart Probes.

Great video, I like to clock the meter, that will tell you the true input, I follow up with a flue gas combustion analysis and set combustion. Love your videos, keep them coming.

Well done sir. So many hacks on youTube, but not here. This is how you properly use fundamental principles and technology to understand the system. Even if the numbers are slightly off, you have a great baseline to compare performance in the future.

Testo also makes a wireless thermometer that is more ideal for testing a gas furnace supply temperature. I know on fieldpiece they don't recommend temperatures beyond 130-140F. According to Mr. Jim Bergmann, they are really designed for cooling testing and may affect it's calibration. Having one for the return would still be fine in order for seeing a relative humidity reading.
Take it for what it's worth.

The operating temp of the 605i is up to 122 degrees F. I hit 124 degrees. A touch outside the range but I like to live on the edge. In retrospect, it would have been better to put the probe a little more downstream. The app menu is called cooling/heating load. So in essence the prove and app are designed for heating calcs as well.

What size holes did you make for the probes and what did you use for plugs?

You can use the button on the probe to capture your measurements instead of hitting the button on the screen.
