    Southgate's record with England is very flattering, and the criticism he's received is fair. He's had extremely favourable draws in tournaments. The only real win they have had when they weren't the favourites was Germany ro16 in at Euro 2020. Most of the English players play attacking/possession based football for their clubs but have to sit back when they play for England.

    What a fair and balanced approach here. I hope enough people appreciate Gareth Southgate. Always so much negativity and criticism these days. He’s had so many people having a go at him. Let’s see how the next person gets on. Yes the players had a hand in this. I hope they take it onboard. They were on the pitch. They were the ones who had control, or not, of that ball. Some really did not look like they do at club level. They couldn’t keep the ball. Another manager can only succeed if they do their part in the pitch. Let’s hope Gareth Southgate gets respect and is acknowledged for his service.

    Millis is Wrong! You can play the way England played but you have to win at the end of the day. You can’t play awful football and still end up losing when it matters most time after time. If England pressed on and came up short because they got an unlucky break or came up against a team that was genuinely better than them people would understand. People are upset because they feel like England left a lot on the table and didn’t play to their strengths.

    The major thing with this whole England situation can be explained by The Dunning-Kruger effect, it is a cognitive bias in which people with limited competence in a particular domain overestimate their abilities. In laymans terms you may watch an England game and think you know better but actually you are just a partial observer thinking you know more than actual trained individuals.

  • @beedav9236
    @beedav9236 Před měsícem +1

    Danny Mills always talks nonsense. Players underperform for many reasons. First, England had no identifiable playing system/style. Their pressing was poor, they did not play as a counter-attacking team neither did they play on the front foot, players playing out of position Another key reason for that is because the quality of coaching the team had. What people like Danny Mills miss is this, these players play in different systems, so when they get together, the manager has to identify what way the team is going to play. Take Spain for example, Luis Enrique, the previous manager played in a totally different way from Luis De La Fuentes. Good players are able to adapt to multiple playing styles provided they are well coached in that system. I often hear the nonsense, 'The coaches have little time to implement a playing style' .That is like I said, absolute Rubbish. Ralf Ragnick took over the Austrian team and see how much they improved. The Ivorian national team fired their manager mid tournament because of how poor they were, appointed a new coach and they went on the win the competition. These players are not newbies and can easily adapt if the ideas are properly communicated and worked on. Danny Mills has said so much nonsense to the degree I do not expect any reasonable explanation to come out of his mouth. This is the same guy who said that if Pep Guardiola was given the opportunity to work with Jude Bellingham, he would promptly turn it down.

    I think a lot of England fans want to take a hard "Win silverware or nothing" stance, believing it'll act as the motivation required. Problem is that when Germans or Argentinians are rough on a national team that's already won plenty, they tend to respond by winning more trophies not too long afterwards. In our situation it just looks like toxic desperation crossingbover into delusion, winning us nothing and in fact leading to us massively regressing. In our lifetime, half an hour from the big one at Wembley could well be as good as it gets. Fans scoffed at it. Now we'll be lucky if the dark days don't return.
    By the way, good on Danny Mills for finally being the one to point out that no, managers do not give players intricate moment by moment guides on how to play, they've got to use their own talents and common sense to MAKE things happen.

  • @TimOgutu-rq3ly
    @TimOgutu-rq3ly Před měsícem

    I’m really surprised by these so called professionals looking at those games and saying that Pickford played well. Yes he did make the saves but that is what he was there for . Pickford was a major problem by constantly booting the ball upfield. In the modern football with midfielders like Rodri and Laporte, Ruiz and Le Normand all over 6 foot. They were just lapping it up. In fact that was the biggest problem with England retaining possession. None of our players are used to playing that way anymore. Only Rice had the physical presence to contend for those balls( Bellingham was on the wing and Kane didn’t fancy it) Any manager worth his worth would have either given Pickford special instructions or changed him. For me he is also very panicky and shouts a lot .It seems to be an English goalie thing Hart , Ramsdale even Mary Earls a very emotional in goal and sometimes make irrational decisions. A good example is have a looks at Pickford during crosses. I bet you will notice that he would always come out and then change his mind and go back. He would always be caught in no man’s land. It’s sheer luck that we didn’t concede with him doing that. And what is the deal with all the shouting . Creates tension for me. I can see why both Pep and Arteta changed these keepers for ones who are more settled and try to keep possession. Trafford is the future for me. So Danny you have so much more experience than me but in your eagerness to defend Southgate( We understand he is your mate and you guys probably played together or apart of the exEngland union.) I can’t understand how you could have missed so much.
    The most productive player for England was Saka and you didn’t even mention him. Next was Cole Palmer who barely had a look in Guehi , Konsa and Watkins.
    Southgate failed to utilise his Squad . Why leave Rushford (tournament proven) and Grealish even Sancho at home carry Gordon and barely use him.
    Why did he not carry a spare left full back the carried Dunk
    Why play trippier again and again while Gomez had played that positional all season for Liverpool ( Most of it while they were top of the league. Trippier had such a bad season and there were rumours he was almost sold by his club.
    He was trying out his system within the tournament whereas every other coach chose their squads according to how they wanted to play .
    He kept talking about missing Phillips carried Wharton and then never played him.(Not even in the third group game even though we were pretty much through.
    N
    He is good guy so good that he is incapable of making those ruthless decisions necessary to win a tournament
    For example Argentina went into the World Cup with Martinez as their top striker. He didn’t perform and was benched with Alvarez taking his place . They ended up winning the tournament based on his goals. In the Cora America the roles were switched with Martinez scoring most of their goals. In tournament football the coach has to be ruthless to get the best for the team. It’s from these decisions we had heroes like scillachi, Rossi who emerged out of nowhere and set tournaments alight. Or not if Southgate was their coaches.
    I dare not go into Kane, or Bellingham or Rice’s issues.
    But please mr Mills Pickford was probably as much a culpable as was Southgate with all the mistakes highlighted the fact you can’t see it worries me a lot about the state of professionals turning into coaching in England.

    Mills is right to a certaon extent. Some people are celebrating, yet they should hold their horses and be careful what they wish for.
    Southgate has raised standards and expectations. Under Southgate England has gone deep into tournaments. There is now an expectation to win and het to finals. If the next man doesn't qualify or get out of the group-stage, people will be crying out for Southgate in a few years time! There will have to be pragmatism at times, not all teams can merely be turned over.
    In terms of the new manager:
    If English, has to be: Eddie Howe or Carsley.
    If non-English: Klopp (though doubtful he would ever take, as he wants to relax, so no idea why his name is being constantly thrown into the mix).
    No way Lampard, Rooney or Gerrard. They have poor man-management and inter-personal skills.

You could have given other examples than Guardiola and Mourinho because Guardiola has been much more succesfull than Mourinho in his career playing attractive football, whilst Mourinho was succesfull on his first teams but since many years ago has had a very moderate success.
    You say it's all about winning and you can play the worst football in the world that as long as you win that will be fine. But what happens when you play crap football and you don't win? If you are not winning anyway, at least you could play decent football.

    Why is it going to be a difficult role to fulfill? Which manager wouldn't want to coach arguably the best crop of players since 1996, where some of them are bordering on world class. Southgate did well but it could've been so tactically better.

    • @chucky7826
      @chucky7826 Před měsícem +1

      Because what manager wants to put up with the English media, deluded media and fans like you with absolute nonsense like "best crop since 96", and anything but winning a trophy is failure even though ye have never been a big hitter at tournaments. Every England team from about 96-2006 would absolutely smash this team

    1. The English soccer community (fans and journalists) pull down their own too often. The reason they have many wonderkids that did not live to the hype and no manager in the last 5 decades that is really successful.
    2. There is a disturbing obsession with attacking football and so called “entertaining” football among most fans these days. Fans are increasingly becoming unrealistic in their expectations of how they believe football should be played all the time.
    3. One of the reason is too many biased and subjective journalists these days. Absolutely nothing to learn from them. They always have an agenda against manager, team or player.

    Pep and kloop will definitely do a better job than southgate even if they get a short period of time. Just look at spain and germany how their play style changed in a matter of months . So, stop giving us excuses relating to time. Southgate is an england manager since 2016 and his playing didn't changed a bit.

    The argument that club managers get day after day to implement a style is ridiculous BTW. If you don't have that time, take your best players, build the system around them and how they play and go from there. The Foden issue the whole tournament was ridiculous

  • @molotovcocktail7645
    @molotovcocktail7645 Před měsícem

    Absolutely correct from Danny. How you win isn't important so long as you win. England lack identity. Do you want a possession based football or is a counter attacking system your prefferd system. Perhaps, a blend of both? Now, playing the 'best' football don't always win you major tournaments. The team who know their identity do well. Greece 2004 is a very good example.

    To my mind it’s been opportunities missed, to win you’ve got to have the ability and mindset…, we had the ability which was clear but unfortunately his mindset denied us the chance to be champions several times! He can be proud of his achievements but shamed for not fulfilling the promise of the players he managed as Englands Manager!

    oh right Mills its the taking part that counts then, I actually agree with most of it. I doubt England will have the success they have had with Southgate but we needed the change we need an tough manager who will stick to a plan and drop players who are not up to it. Id go with an older man like Redknapp with Lampard as assistant if we go with a younger Id get Howe forget Potter.

    They were about players adapting , fighting, and playing for each other.. not for the manager or the fans.. for each other.

    I thank Southgate and he has done great job but some of his decision was questionable because some players are not in their regular positions, no natural left footed left back apart from Luke Shaw, substitute was coming on too late. He could have been out at round of 16 by Slovakia. He was also lucky with draws. He took as to 2 finals but we didn't get the trophy and that's really disappointing and play ugly football. He was too loyal to players like Kane, Foden and Saka when they weren't performing.

    If the remit is to win a trophy, you get Klopp, or Mourinho. These guys will be contact regularly when allowed, for England get-together's, and i am sure they don't mind a 2 or 4 year sabaticle from club managing.
    What did Eddie Howe do with Newcastle in Champions League, group stages...this last season? he was found out, against Dortmund, AC Milan.
    Southgate hasn't even won is the Nations League Cup...!!!
    Why this anti-foreign manager for England, the women's manager Sarah Wiegman is dutch. She has won England the Euros in 2022.

    Danny was spot on here. Most English football fans only are interested in football related to their club, they aren't interested in any other football if it doesn't involve their team. Look at the Euro teams, all those "lesser" teams have players in Serie A, La Liga, Bundesliga and the Premier League, but we have this attitude of, never heard of em therefore we'll easily beat them. Ignorance
