I think he means booing of his name when teams read out and throwing of a few plastic cups. Sad really what the media try and do. The criticism wasn't about his dress sense or his family or anything personal. It was about his ability as a manager of an elite team. They are trying to spin the narrative that because he's got to 2 finals he must be good. What they arent factoring in the argument is the level of players at his disposal. If turkey or denmark had got to the final, that's an achievement, but it's the least England could expect with the raft of domestic winners in their squad. If you count up the CL winners, league winners, fa cup winners medals in that england team I bet it's by far the most decorated team in the tournament. Managing to scrape through against minnows with minutes to go or on penalty's and scam the way to the final is meant to be an achievement we should be proud of according to these guys. That is just a misrepresentation. Here in Holland the major TV channel experts are equally harsh about SG. Van der Vaart judged the approach of England harshly. Steve Mc Manaman was quite vocal about this too. Other journalists on ESPN.. It's quite mainstream and logical that we should expect the most expensive and valued national team in the world to perform more dominantly, do keep the ball better, to adapt better to changes in the opposite team. If anything, Southgate's personal qualities that he undoubtedly has and the changes he has managed to make quite ingeniously around the team, have clouded the degree to which he was out of his depth. Perhaps things could have worked out if he had had his personal stature, man management and social skills, complemented by a more modern set of coaches alongside him, like Queiroz was to Fergie or Flick and Loew used to be, perhaps this would have worked.

If I look at the big picture of Gareth Southgate's reign, he has taken England to a higher level, and I commend him for that. In the 2018 WC he exceeded expectations by taking England to a SF. However, in that game he handed the initiative to Croatia, and lost the game. If he had learnt from that and not repeated the same mistake in Euro 2020(1), England would finally have won a tournament, that for me was the big, missed opportunity. They may have gone into WC 2022 and Euro 2024 with a different mindset, really believing that they can win tournaments. Instead, they adopted a cautious approach and when they came up against quality opposition, they succumbed. Spain 2024 are a better team than Italy 2020(1), they strolled to the final, while England scrapped and scraped their way there. I hope whoever takes over, can take the team to the next level.

I'm really impressed by the decision Southgate took not to continue as an England's head coach, it reminded me of the time Tata Martino announced departure from Argentina team after losing Copa America 2016. Therefore, it's going to be hard to find a new manager for England after what Gareth did.

Southgate comes across like the Grail knight, Sir Percival, the most gracious and innocent of the Knights of the Round Table. Percival came closest in the Grail Quest but was simply unable to grasp the Holy Grail because he thought to much, as he later confessed, he realized that he did not have the required faith.
There are times you need a Mordred. They may be unthinking, cruel, and vicious, they may betray you BUT that's the price you pay for success.
You were a waste of time Sir Southgate. Now for a Mordred, "Leader, Leader, Leader!"

There´s a certain demographic of person who is going to insist that the next manager plays intense, fast paced attacking football, then spends the next 2 years criticising players for saying that they get tired and play too many games, then will act shocked when the England team look exhausted playing Miami, LA and Mexico City in July and we get put out of our misery in ET the last 16 🤣

Correct.. let's play high pressing football at 4pm in Mexico City during the summer and then criticise the Manager for not playing Antony Gordon when to play him you'd have to bench Foden or Bellingham. Lets bring in Kevin Keegan and and Terry McDermott to take us forward!

When kane came out for the second half, and after we equalised, then went deep defence again instead of going at spain, just showed Southgate's limitations, just not brave enough to have a real go at spain, Southgate is a really great guy, he did unite england players and fan's, the most continued success since 66. But it was the defeat to italy. We had them at 1-0 and never pressed for a 2nd. We got deeper and deeper against an average Italian team, i do think he should be knighted. We now need a manager to take us one step further and win a major tournament. The FA. Need to show ambition and make a good offer to klopp, sadly they won't, and will appoint a safe, yes man, who will conform to the FA's mediocre way of boring stability, when we have the players for attacking rock nroll football.

I've no doubt that Southgate is a wonderful human being who endeared himself to both players and the media.
But, here's the but. At no stretch of the imagination can anyone consider or think of Southgate as an elite coach and tactician. His list of tactical errors is numerous and not just in Euro 2024
Happy retirement, Gareth. Now, the FA has to find that elite coach who can mould England's generational talent into a cohesive team that will get bums off seats

I think Southgate fell short when it came to in-game player changes and in sticking to players like Kane who simply were not performing well from the start. Otherwise, I think Southgate did well and there is a need perhaps for us to reign in our perception of just how good our players are, whether individually or as a team, as I think a lot of the responsibility falls on their shoulders for not performing close to their best. We only saw brief fleeting moments of brilliance which showed what they can do and it was in those moments that got us over the line. The question is, aside from not playing free flowing attacking players like Palmer from the start, why don’t the players show that kind of gusto consistently or more frequently during games?

Supporters' voices on social media, down the pub, or at work are as important, if not more so, than the media clique on here who are paying homage to Southgate and the way he set up his teams throughout the Euros. Southgate turned a group of exciting and talented pros into a bore fest
There is no way that anyone with an ounce of knowledge of the beautiful game could describe Southgate as an elite coach and tactician.

The major thing with this whole England situation can be explained by The Dunning-Kruger effect, it is a cognitive bias in which people with limited competence in a particular domain overestimate their abilities. In laymans terms you may watch an England game and think you know better but actually you are just a partial observer thinking you know more than actual trained individuals.

I totally get Kaveh's opinion on that if England go back to pre 2016, 2020, people (majority are forgetful or fickle) are going to start calling for Southgate because most managers won't even take England to the final. We'll see. It all depends on how the next one does.
