In previous episodes we showed you an issue with water ingress due to lack of guttering and no overhang on our tiles resulting in rain water landing straight on our external wall stones, which then allowed water to seep in. We began fixing the problem by clearing out built up dirt and pointing in the gaps with mortar to seal it up, and now we have installed our temporary guttering and drainage until we can get the permanent metal solution installed in a few months!

Theo and Bee gave up their busy city lifestyles in 2014 to explore alternative living, and have lived in vans and boats since then without looking back! Along with their cat Ginjey Bear they have been driving around the world in their self converted Sprinter van. However, when the global pandemic hit they began converting their abandoned stone barn in Central Portugal to turn into a wonderful tiny stone cottage. Along the way, they have rescued a playful cat called Furrnando and have a wonderful flock of Chickens!

I would suggest that on the end of your drain pipe, if the whole thing is not buried, that you put a screen to keep out the rodents. They will find it and build a big old nest which will clog up the whole thing. The effort of putting a screen on it will save you headaches down the line.

You can also use a solid pipe cap that you drill drainage holes into. If you attach it with just a thin bead of outdoor caulk, instead of adhesive, you can take it off to clean out debris, when necessary.

I think I mentioned collecting the water off the barn roof before, an extra layer of water resiliance. Of course, one way to collect the water would be to divert it....to a pond or other catchment area. Hmm....🤔 Once you soften the paint, a wire brush may do the job?

A Wire brush for your angle grinder will make short work of removing the paint off the stone. White spirit is only good for paint that hasn't gone hard, you require proper paint stripper (nasty stuff) for old paint. Hence wire brushing and if the stone looks too clean after, a bit of soil and water will soon blend it in. I would also recommend a reducer for the downpipe going in to the drain pipe. 👍 😎 😸

You can attach something like a strip of plastic or something that goes up behind the end of the tiles attached to the rain gutter that will prevent water from running down your wall. Less work, it will keep your home natural and authentic and less expensive.

Why not get yourself a couple of IBC tanks and harvest the rainwater instead of drain it away?
For the gutter/ roof problem, mount a metal "shelf" under the tile into the gutter, that way the "low flow" still end up in the gutters...
Nice work anyway, keep up that good spirit, and stay safe.

    • @carda999

Yes mount a water butt or barrel on an elevated platform then you can pipe rainwater into the barn for doing dishes or boiling etc. Also fit an outside tap for watering plants etc. Shame to waste water on an off grid cabin.

I noticed the bare wood behind the gutter. Will this have a plastic barrier stapled along under the tile to protect the wood and lay over the other plastic. I live in a country that gets lots of rain so maybe that’s not needed and I’m being overly “beefin” and over protective. I just worry that splashback could be a problem at this spot.

Hi both, yes I know you've installed a temporary gutter, however you might want to consider a water collection Butt taking water from the roof....... then one outlet 3/5 up joined into the French Drain (yet to be installed) to help flush it clear. Another outlet at 4/5 up as an overflow to run to drain. Then a low outlet with tap at the base to recycle your water as you wish.
PS In the UK the roofing felt always overlaps into the guttering. - Just an idea for you to consider

Bee, you found such beautiful music for spanning around the property and the critters and kitties, it almost felt like springtime ! Kuddos on getting some gutter into place now, will give you more peace of mind in inclement weather. Lovely to just see you getting so many little chores and fixes in place, and working together in harmony. I agree with suggestion to find some rock-texture type paint to cover the white rock, will save you tons of time and effort and even if it doesn't completely match the other stone, it will fade into the overall look and not stick out like a sore thumb which bugs you Theo ! As they say, work smarter, not harder and don't sweat the small stuff and save your energy for the bigger issues 😎 Theo, you just keep rockin the socks, and Bee you just keep rockin with your beautiful smile and words. at the end of the pipe have a little retaining pond with a channel that goes across the slope- The water will stay on the land and then will help refresh your well water. Watched Homstead Paradise, got barren land. they do a very interesting rain collection system close to the top of the hill- small retaining ponds with channels carved into the slope that carry the water horizontal instead of flowing down hill and off the property. So you will have grassy areas around the channels because it gets more water per year than just a regular slope

Hi, the easy way and right way Is take of the bottom row of tile and put 18” dpc plastic under the first tile and allow the dpc to touch the bottom of the gutter. Pin the dpc to the rafters, it won’t take long but it is the proper way. Then you can forget all about the problems of any water running down the blocks . Regards Diane

    • @KingstonHomeMaintenance
      @KingstonHomeMaintenance Před 2 lety +8

Nearly the right idea but what you should use are felt supports, not dpc, these are a plastic length of about 1.5m. The undersarking Theo should be above your gutter, this alone would get the water into the gutter as this is seminpermable and doesn't allow water back in.

@@KingstonHomeMaintenance I can see from the video that there already is a few inches of undersarking (roofing felt) hanging just below the new guttering from underneath the tiles. If you were to cut a couple of vertical cuts, with a Stanley knife, either side of each gutter bracket you could lap the roofing felt into the gutter for most of its length. The sort of gutter brackets soled in England fix to the wall so you wouldn't have to make the cuts I described but as your gutter brackets fix on the edge of the tiles this the only way to get the roofing felt to lap into the gutter. I think the white stone gives the barn character. It can be a sentimental reminder of how much effort it took for Theo and Bea to rebuild the house.

I don't know about other peeps but I could watch a whole video of the cats and chickens with the soothing music you use.

Connection to each other and your land is what you two are about and we respect that immensely. Take care of each other and be well. Much love from Ottawa 🇨🇦

A temporary bodge for the roof tile overhang... A piece of string in each valley, extending down into the gutter. That will guide slow-flowing water down the string, away from the tile and wall, into the gutter.

You can help the rainwater go to into the gutter with a piece of wire that you glue to the last centimeter of your roof tile and let it hang down in your gutter. We do the same with a thin chain from the gutter to a rain barrel. Works well!

  • @martindumontakatherumrunne6019

Masonary paint is usually water based so white spirit won’t affect it. Brick acid might work or use a grinder with a flapper disc

Hi Bea and Theo! Yes, Theo a lean two would work nicely to correct the roof tiling drainage issue. That large pvc just doesn't look nice, it really stands out- but if you'd paint it the color of the beige barn stone it would certainly blend in and look much nicer. I am so excited for you all, every day you get something accomplished, closer to moving into your beautiful new home! I see your guttering problem. That roofing membrane could be arranged and supported with some timber to overlap the guttering to direct water into it, maybe. Currently, rain could dribble down the wall behind the guttering. You might avoid that if you can manage some jiggery pokery. Should last until you get the shed built.
