when you think about the period the mille miglia ran through (1927-1957) and the cars that these people drove... you can only say men were men. people were expected to die during every race and in every race there were fatalities. the roads were mostly dirt even in the 50's and a lot of the cars prior to the first world war had more than 400 hp. in the 30's gp cars had up to 600 hp. the drivers who drove this race were legends in their own right and it truly was a golden age of racing. in 1931 tazio nuvolari would win the mille miglia driving an alfa romeo 6c, coming from second place in pitch black darkness on dirt roads and no amenities to make driving easier at all (keep in mind he was also a tiny person and had to drift the cars around corners because he couldn't turn the steering wheel if he slowed down) he switches off his lights in the middle of the night to surprise the car in front, which also happens to be his team mate, using nothing but the one rear light on the other car as a guide. he catches him up, and in the last second completely baffles his opponent when he switches on his lights and takes the lead to win the race. if that isn't legendary, then i don't know what is...

The fact that Sir Stirling Moss did this route back in 1955 in a Mercedes 300 SLR with narrow tires on unfamiliar public roads which were largely still poc-marked by WW2 allied bomb holes, sitting next to your driver who couldn't hear you(no radio)... RACING ( not riding along with ) other cars driven by locals who knew the route.... and you averaged 97.9mph over 1,000 miles and completed the entire course ( which now takes 4 days ) in 10 hours, 7 mins and 48 seconds... its a complete mindfuck of driving ability. Easily the greatest single driving feat by any racer...especially when you consider that because he didn't know the route, he was forced to carry extra weight ...Denis Jenkinson, his 'navigator'...his competitors, such as Fangio (2nd) and Kling (3rd) all drove alone. Not only did Moss drive the best drive in history, he also invented pace-notes.

It is definitely on my bucket list but sadly after a bout with cancer and a heart attack I am limited to watching people like Jay Leno get to do it and while 10 years ago I could have easily done 15 hours behind the wheel It would be a bit of a stretch for me. For now, I will have to satisfy myself with runs up and down the California and Oregon coasts in my 1974 Alfa Romeo Spider. For me, Life doesn't get much better. Thanks for this one Jay!

In '66 I got out of high school and during the summer found a 1954 XK120 in a used car lot for 1200 dollars. Got me hooked on cars as well. Low miles, white-red leather with steel wheels and rear fender skirts. Man said it was owned by Augie Papst. Original books and tool kit, terrible heater and had a plaque on the dash stating it to be a replica of the car that hit 137MPH in Belgium. All the canvas was original and it had that smell. I kept that and wound up with a few more...worked my butt off until I was drafted. College? Nope..cars. While I was gone my mother sold the works. I came home and my cars were gone. Never could replace any of them, life just took over. I'm 65 now and everytime I see one I almost cry.1200 dollars.

Couple of mistaments of fact. 1) Sterling actually averaged 97.9 mph, not "over 100 mph".2) The 300 SLRs top speed at red line (7,500 rpm) was 170--no where near the 200 mph figure Jay mentioned. 3) They did stop several times for fuel and once for fresh tires....and a pee. The fact that their average speed included these stops makes the achievement that much more amazing.

R.I.P. Sir Stirling Moss (1929-2020) "He defined his era of racing as much as it defined him and that time was a very special and formative one. Moss is a name that is woven indelibly into the sport’s very fabric. We will not see his like again." (Mark Hughes wring in Motor Sport Magazine.

Thanks so much...I felt like I was in my XK140 again! It would bump a rattle a bit till you got past 95MPH and then she would settle down and cruise (actually felt like the whole car lowered about an inch). Seemed happiest purring at around 110MPH for hours.

For anyone who has a passion for wind in their hair driving listen to Martin Brundle from 16.43. Absolutely mesmerizing. His words for me more or less put me in the driving seat of that wonderful D type. Harks back to the days when Britain was truly Great ! Helped in part by Jaguar naturally ! What a car ! What else could you want ?
What a trip. I can only wish that I had the ability to afford such an experience. Thank you Jay !

Found myself driving in front of an XK120 in Epping, Essex, just yesterday. Creamy white, open top, correct period number plate (license plate), utterly beautiful. Funny thing, the roadster and I passed by a 1964 Routemaster bus, on heritage tourist duty. If only I could use my camera, would have been the coolest "retro" camphone shot ever!

Spent the weekend in Bologna specifically to see this event. Was incredible to see such great cars in such a beautiful setting. Got up at the crack of dawn to see the drivers depart on the final leg back to Brescia. Sadly no sign of Jay, he must have left veeery early! Great video, best I've seen.

What fun! Jay is living the American dream, driving a British car, in Italy. How cool is that.. Really liked the Sterling Moss clips as well.

It's just joyous to see Jay engaged in his great passion at this level and there is none more worthy than one of the all-time greatest guardians of automotive heritage! Thanks for sharing the trip!!!
