  • 5hp L-Head was a good motor, but all aluminum block is wearing out and starting to egg-shape. Let me know if we should rebuild it to keep reverse, or buy a new motor?

    If it were cast iron, I would recommend a rebuild. The egg shaped aluminum bore would not give me a lot of confidence, so I would suggest to move on from that engine.
    Cannot believe a mouse found a way to get into the cylinder!

      Hey Micah! Great to hear from you. I wish it was cast iron and wish it had crank bearings instead of riding on the bare case. Hope you and the family are doing well!

    I guess it would depend on how much you want that reverse gearing setup? It is always nice to have a new motor. Too bad they no longer make that motor! ;-)

    I'm with you, the preditor engine would be cheaper overall.

    Hi Craig thank you for the breakdown made easy for the mechanically challenged.
    Do you have any videos regarding reassembly of the carburetor linkages?
    Thanks Mitch

      Not anything in depth, but Donyboy71 does. And I think he also has this 5hp Briggs motor linkage. Some of those videos are 360p and a bit granular but I’m pretty sure he has a video on this motor.

    Get a good running 5 Hp and swap out the end cover and camshaft

    I would just hone the cylinder put standard rings in it and maybe use it on a retro mini bike
    On aluminum cylinders Make Sure you file all the Sharp corners of the rings at the end gaps
    Aluminum walls get gouged by sharp edges really easy

      I like that idea Jim. That's a much cheaper alternative. I heard a number of machine shops won't machine an aluminum block anyway, haven't checked with the guy I used for the Onan years back.

    I'm all about rebuilding the engine. It's doesn't look ready for the grave.

      JERRY!!! I have to get a look at the crank journal and measure that as well. I found a lot of play at TDC yesterday.

    i have the very same tiller and used it quite often today it made a loud bang now the pull cord is very loose and it will not turn the engine over did i break a connecting rod or something? prior to this it kept stalling and was running really hard

    • @CraigArndt
      @CraigArndt  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Take the recoil off and see if you can turn the engine over by hand. If not it seized or broke something internally possibly.

    • @riprightjamz920

      @@CraigArndt my initial thought was that it broke a rod the bang was an internal noise and it was loud

    I'd hone that puppy and let er rip...what kind of gauge did you use with the mics?

    • @CraigArndt
      @CraigArndt  Před 2 lety

      I bought internal bore gauges in a set and also a set of micrometers, all from Amazon when I rebuilt my sons friends Gravely tractor. I looked around and read reviews but these are pretty nice for small engine work. I think I am going to keep this motor and rebuild it. I think it has some life left.

      Here is the video I did last year on the Harbor Freight Predator engine. Great motor, quiet and loads of power. 3/4 throttle is all you need on a Pony. czcams.com/video/LG1fj4j2vGI/video.html

      Is there a way to adapt the reverse gear to work on a predator engine?
