  • Smith & Wesson Gen 3 Reliability
Kraken demos his 4506-1 eating empty cases from slide lock. Back in the day, something like this was a public relations selling point. Why? Reliability of semiautomatics was a big concern in a lot of circles. Especially amongst the duty-wheel-gun crowd.
This problem will seem foreign to most of our viewers today. But one has to remember, most of you grew up in the shadow of Glock’s success. Back then a lot of people just, “couldn’t trust an auto”. And, “wheel guns NEVER jam”.
Neither statement of course is true. But it was a different time.
Also don’t even mention the subject of hollow point ammunition, shape and ogive tech. And expecting THAT to feed in autos reliably. That is almost a bridge too far.
So a Smith & Wesson police rep demoing a gun feeding empty brass from slide lock?! To a bunch of wheel gun guys! Talk about making an impression.
“How’d they do that? Dunno. Must be a special trick”.

It can’t be overstated, parlor tricks like this went a long way in convincing old coppers that semi-autos could be as good as revolvers.

I love the old metal guns. I like Gen 3 smith's, 1911's, German Sigs, and HK P7 series. It's all I really own.

I think that these guns should make a comeback.

@@joaopedrobaggio4475 The only way that happens is if they become as expensive as Colt Pythons did. At that point, Smith would be incentivized to not leave money on the table.
But if that were to happen it wouldn’t be for another 20-30 years.

@joaopedrobaggio4475 The days of professional craftsman making pistols is all but done outside of high end 1911's. We live in a quick, cheap, easy society now. I would do anything to have HK Germany start making the P7's again. This current generation just wants cheap Tupperware guns. Unfortunately I think this generation will find in 30yrs that they missed out on the fond experiences we have had along the way with handbuilt pistols. The appreciation in pistols that someone spent working and fitting together. As opposed to slapping one together off of an assembly line.

I see where you are coming from. I am a little more pragmatic on the matter. For starters, there are more high-end 1911s being made today than ever before. So the demand is there. Also…I am not so sure personally that “craftsmanship” marketing isn’t just that: marketing. The peak example of that for me is hand checkering. As a performance based shooter, I want the best checkering I can get. But I also don’t care to pay Bob Marvel’s or Jason Burton’s hourly prices to do it either. I would rather just have a CNC cut the checkering and leave those man hours free to get the gun done faster in other areas.
All I heard for the better part of 40 years was the Colt Python ain’t coming back. The tooling was mostly obsolete and the human skill developed to do all the final fitting by hand was gone and retired. Then Pythons got to 5-7-8k. And look what happened. Colt remade the gun, that is more durable for extended shooting, has a better DA trigger pull, and it’s in the teens. 2” 4” 6” 8”. Now both stainless and blued. As many options as you can shake a stick at.
If these Smiths get to be THAT valuable, they will be remade. Certainly “the one” everyone seems to want. Might be a while. But a S&W from this era isn’t some lost technology like Greek Fire, Egyptian embalming methods or the Antikythera Mechanism. It’s a mid-century, mass produced gun.
