  • “Psalm 16 (You are My Portion and My Cup)” - Patricia Van Ness
Sung by the Choir of Trinity Wall Street, New York City
    Director of Music: Julian Wachner
Recorded in July 2021 at Trinity Church Wall Street and presented by Amplify Female Composers in the Fall Female Composer Fridays series, coordinated by Carolyn Craig and Janet Yieh.
Today’s #FemaleComposerFriday anthem is Patricia Van Ness’s “Psalm 16 (You Are My Portion and My Cup).” We are especially excited to share this first recording of this work!
Van Ness is an American composer whose works have been commissioned, premiered, and performed by ensembles and organizations including the King’s Singers, Heidelberg New Music Festival, Chanticleer, the Spoleto Festival Orchestra, and many more. She is Composer-in-Residence at St. Paul’s Episcopal in Burlingame, CA (@Susan Jane Matthews, Director of Music), has been awarded residencies with the Boston Landmarks Orchestra and with Coro Allegro, and is Staff Composer at First Church in Cambridge, MA (Peter Sykes, Director of Music). More information can be found on her website, www.patriciava....
One of Van Ness’s current projects is to set all 150 psalms, in MUSIC FOR THE PSALMS, dedicated to Peter Sykes. Psalm 16 specifically was commissioned by and dedicated to Carson Cooman. The scores are available for free on her website.
This psalm setting foregrounds a simple, single-note chant line, which proclaims the text, while the other voice parts swirl around this line, painting the text and coming ever more to the fore towards the final “Alleluia.”

Amplify Female Composers is a new platform created by Carolyn Craig and Janet Yieh that seeks to encourage the performance of sacred music by female composers and arrangers. Our hope is to expand the rich repertoire of music in liturgical music programs, and to send this excellent music out into the world as a helpful resource for all church musicians and music lovers alike. The platform also hosts Resources and Articles pages to refer readers to some of the incredible work surrounding the choral and organ music of female composers and arrangers.
