Man, why are you not wearing PC glasses when doing such things? It's very dangerous! Your eyes are almost priceless (true for everybody's)!
Once I've got my skull trauma and got the surgery (some kind of titanium net implant inside) then I've started to value my eyes much more! After the surgery I was learning to control my left eye from the beginning. It wasn't easy for about a week maybe. Then also it did became more sensetive to wind and etc. I've started to wear PC glasses in street very often. Now it's almost my best thing that I take on any trip :) It protects from rain+wind, snow+wind and from dust (obviously).

I wouldn't say they're great; they're probably not as good as an Epiphone. I've seen poorly cut nuts and terrible tuning machines. Sure, you can fix those issues (including pickups) but the reason most people buy them is BECAUSE they say "Gibson" on the headstock. I wouldn't want some dumb name on there.
However, I HAVE had success with (some of) these things. I've recorded songs with them (without upgrades) and nobody bats an eyelid.

I own a few Chinese knockoff guitars that I’ve put work into and turned into great guitars. As a left handed guitar player the knockoffs are sometimes the only way of getting the kind of guitar you want at a reasonable price. Things have improved for lefties in recent years, but there are still a lot of manufacturers out there who treat us like dirt. Frankly until that changes they deserve to be counterfeited. Reason to buy one: logos are important to A LOT of people. I’ve bought a few and put about $600 into them and made some pretty amazing guitars. I’d rather play a fake Gibson with cool parts on it because it’s nicer to look at than a beginner Harley Benton.

Easy-peasy, and very simple: sand and repaint the headstock, and, if needed, alter the headstock profile.
I came across two Fender counterfeits, and I repainted the headstocks to match the body color - one black and one red. Before that I slightly altered the headstock profile to be less 'Fenderish'. Jobs done.
Some of the counterfeits aren't bad guitars in their own right, but should not be confused with OEM.
Any remaining items like truss rod covers etc., should be replaced. Not a difficult thing to do.

Ive stated before a very close friend of mine works at a big USA manufacturing company. He said that the painted body guitars many times are built with the scrap left over lumber. He said he personally has seen 4, 5, 6,and even 7 piece bodies. They are not going to just throw it away. And they cant make a transparent finish guitar out of many different pieces. So yeah. I do think the Chibson era is over and done, but the Chibson phenomenon had one huge merit, it pushed all major brands to design and put out very affordable models to counter the Chibson attack, which for a while was taking business away from them. As a result, aspiring players do now have plenty of choice of real brand instruments, with solid specs, which are way more reliable and consistent than Chibsons because of big brand QC, in the same price range where Chibsons operated, so there is, indeed, no reason left whatsoever to buy a Chibson, and that is a very different landscape vs. 10 years ago.

Fair point. I was thinking "Chibson phenomenon" beyond actual LP copies, more in terms of Chinese ali**press counterfeits at large, which, being one-off private orders, can range anywhere between "about ok" to technically unplayable, which by origin and purchasing method offer no guarantee whatsoever, and... well, they're illegal. And no, I wouldn't consider present Gibson to be a progress in guitar making. I'm thinking of other brands which offer great affordable alternatives, even LP style guitars, without the risk and gamble of Chibsons.

I would stamp the back of the head stock with fake or counterfeit just like they do with 2nds or the same way they stamp the serial number. You could always remove the branding and replace it with something like a decal that says CHIBSON. Probably not the best thing to do inside with no protection/mask. You have no clue what you can be breathing or spreading around you studio/home. What a lot of people do not take into consideration is the counterfeit less expensive guitars. I have seen fake Epis, Squires, LTD, Schecters. They are usually sold thru shady dealers over seas. I used to have a link to an Australian shop that was selling knockoffs of a lot of brands.

A Very entertaining video. The grinder was a bit overkill but looked fun. So what is your take on partscasters? I could not afford one of those AVRI Fender Jaguars so I built mine over almost a year of buying genuine fender parts a few each month. It is for my own use and wont ever be sold. Does not being assembled at Fender by an actual employee make it fake? All guitar parts are mass produced and stored in bins where each piece is picked to complete a guitar. Does that make every single one produced a partscaster also? Always awesome content on your channel.

Nothing wrong with owning a Chibson as long as it's for personal use only and you don't ever plan to sell it. There are Chibsons with impeccable looks for a fraction of the price of even an Epiphone, let alone Gibson. Get a set of good pickups like Seymour Duncan JB/Jazz for $200 and you still have a nice guitar for half of the price of an Epiphone. Besides I heard that even Slash played a Chibson in some of GNR early videos.

It wasnt a chinese fake although it was a Les Paul replica (I guess still a fake but a custom build not a mass production fake) - it was a Les Paul replica made by reknown guitar builder Kris Derrig. This guitar was eventually how he connected with Gibson. They endorsed his use of this custom guitar and eventually made a reissue of this Kris Derrig guitar under the Gibson banner.

I’m all for getting Chibsons off the marketplace. As far as cheap brands go, obviously, I’m for affordability so everyone can have an opportunity to play, but at this point, I only buy higher end($500 and up) not necessarily because they play better, but it’s nice if something happens in the future and you need money fast, you can always pawn or sell your USA Gibson of Fender. Trying to borrow money on cheap equipment is aggravating as hell.

In terms of value lot less stress about it possibly getting stolen compared to a real Gibson. Never thought about selling it because its so good but should I in the future of course I'd be 100% honest about it being a knock off and perhaps even consider removing the logo too. Although I'd never do it this way with a grinder......thats making a lot of unnessasary damage.

Love this video Max and totally agree with every point. CZcamsrs that review these guitars debate quality and value for the price but for me, if they're so good, why arent the chinese manufacturers putting their own name on them - because if they did, NO ONE would buy them. They may be good builds, but people buy them because of the brand logos on the headstock. I also agree that there is no good reason to buy one - it just perpetuates the issue. My issue isnt so much owning one but the chance that you could be part of someone getting scammed once the guitar leaves your possession. Good for you for making the video and "disposing" the logos on the guitars you own.
