    Thank you Carl for the clear video. In my case, the gas in the battery deformed my entire laptop and put a lot of mechanical stress on the circuit board. When the laptop got warm, it blue screened from the mechanical stress. The old batteries were reminding me more of an airbag than a laptop battery.

      Thanks for watching. You should need only the one screwdriver for this replacement, but if you are going to get into more work like this you will need more tools. :) I recommend getting a set of the small screwdrivers in various sizes and even maybe one of those sets with a handle and a bunch of replacable bits for all the common screw types. Another tip on the battery life is to check your task manager to see what is running in the background I often notice my battery going down faster than normal and find a task in the background sucking up a lot of CPU time. If you now what the task is and that it is safe to end it, you can kill the task to end the battery drain.

    Hi Carl. Thanks so much for this video. I was able to change out my battery and everything appears to be working perfectly! I was never able to find a battery that said Dell, so I bought one from Amazon for about $50. It's an off brand but the laptop appears to be accepting it fine with no hitches. Wish Dell wouldn't make it so hard to switch out batteries. I keep a laptop for a long time and run through several batteries during the life of it. Thanks!

    • @cdsmith
      @cdsmith  Před 4 lety +3

      Nice to know that it is possible that non-Dell branded batteries can work as well. I kind of figured they might work OK considering how many there are out there for sale but I was a bit worried about trying one when I replaced mine. It would be nice if it was easier to switch out batteries, but I can understand why they made the laptop this way. Now that they want to make many laptops very thin, they can't really design them with the older style detachable battery packs that had the thicker cylindrical 18650 cells inside. Maybe they could have designed it with a user replaceable battery pack with the flat battery inside, but even that might have made the laptop thicker because of the extra layers of plastic housing that would be necessary.

      I am used to the tabs on the back to replace the battery. Same as you. So I Felt the same as you, before doing it... it was fairly easy, once you locate the correct CZcams video. Did take about 20 minutes, because this was my first time and did not want to drop a screw or pull the wrong place on the back when removing it. One word of caution... Disconnect your old battery at the battery..NOT the mother board. If you do make sure you salvage the connector cable.
      AND
      I needed to use a very small flat head screw driver to remove the cable battery plug, you don't want to risk pulling on the wires and breaking one of the wirers.

    Hi Carl. Thanks for the great tutorial video. I was able to change out my old battery and install a brand new one. However, my laptop says 0% available (plugged in, not charging). Is there anything I can check to see why neither batteries are charging or is there a common problem with the Inspiron 15 7548? I thought maybe i just needed a fresh reboot after the install but it still isn't charging. Any advice would be great!

    You need to know the Model number ( example above is model 7569) a) not only to buy the correct battery, but b) Removal of the back.... for instance it is different on the models that turn into a tablet. [You need the model number if you look at CZcams to see the procedure.
    I just did my wife's Dell . Ordered a non Dell, but same watts, looked on youtube for the procedure. It went like clockwork. Plugged it in and battery was at 46%. It works fine and was charging up. They did recommend a "calibrate" and 3 drains and recharge initially.

    • @rhmyers
      @rhmyers Před 4 lety

      Addition: It came with two screwdrivers. Dell does use LockTite Blue, which makes sure the screws stay in, but not so much that you can't remove them.
      I slso complement Dell on the ease with which the back comes off after you have the screws removed. Even though there were 20 clips they back popped off quite easily … and surprisingly they lined up on the first try when reassembling.

      @cdsmith  Před 3 lety

      I don't have a link to a genuine Dell battery. I think the only way to be reasonably sure you are getting a genuine Dell battery is to buy it directly from them. At a far higher cost, if they even offer it. The WDX0R battery I used in my first replacement looked like a genuine dell but that seller has long since stopped selling it. When I bought the 33YDH battery for my second replacement I didn't even try to find one that said Dell on it.

    • @cdsmith
      @cdsmith  Před 4 lety

      Dell has used the "Inspiron 15 7000 Series" name for a wide range of laptops so I wouldn't know if the same battery would work for yours. You would need to check the specific model number, like for mine it's model 7569. Or just open it up to see what kind of battery is inside. As for the screws, I don't know the specifics other than they are tiny screws with philips heads. If you are just replacing the battery you shouldn't need new screws unless you lose one.

I have the DELL INSPIRON 13 7000 SERIES (2in1) laptop, got it back in 2017, just checked the Power Management Lite and it says "FAIR" and it says that I should consider changing the battery. I got the laptop from Best Buy here in Canada if you're familiar with that. Do you think they're capable of doing the battery work changes? Cause I dont have the tools to change it myself. Hope you respond. Cheers!

    • @cdsmith
      @cdsmith  Před 4 lety +1

      If Best Buy in Canada has Geek Squad like they do in the US they should be able to install a new battery for you. But it's actually not that hard to do, and if I remember right the only tools you need are a small philips screwdriver and some sort of plastic tool to wedge in the crack to pop the cover loose where it snaps in. Even something simple like a guitar pick can work for that. But if you don't feel confident in trying it yourself I would think Best Buy could do it for you. And if they do it you have the advantage of not having to worry about breaking something. It's on them to get the job done properly.

    Quick question- how long should it take to get the screws loose- I’ve trying to unscrew the back of my laptop and it only seems to get loose but it won’t pop off you know

    • @cdsmith
      @cdsmith  Před rokem

      It shouldn't take too many turns to loosen the screws. Maybe 5 to 10 turns. Often the screws will come out of the holes when they are loose but on some laptops the don't, they stay trapped in the back cover. The other thing is that the covers are usually also held on with snap together points around the edge. So you have to use something to pry around the edge all the way around and pop apart the spots that snap together. A guitar pick or something similar often works well to pop the cover loose without damaging anything.

      Sorry, I do not. The link is dead now as the seller is either not selling this battery or is no longer on Amazon. The battery I installed in this video didn't last very long anyway, and I have already replaced it again since then. But the last time I figured out I could replace it with a 4 cell battery and get much longer run time. See my newer video at czcams.com/video/R6cbvlZyg6E/video.html for how to do that. The 4 cell battery came from an Amazon seller called "FLYTEN INC" and it has been working very well.

    Can you hlep me?

    • @cdsmith
      @cdsmith  Před 4 lety +2

      There are several things you can do. First is check if you have the Dell Power Manager app installed. Right click on the battery symbol in the lower right of the task bar and see if the pop up shows "Dell Power Manager." If it does you can pick that and it might give you some information about your battery. On mine there is a link in the top right that says "order battery" that will take you to Dell's site. Unfortunately, when I clicked that it took me to a page that shows nothing about actually buying a battery. But it does have a bunch of information on how to determine the health of your battery. When I bought my battery I just did a search on Amazon and eBay by the model number of my laptop. I don't think all 7000 series use the same battery so you'll have to find the specific model number, like for mine it is 7569. Just search for "Dell Inspiron 7569 battery" but with your number in place of the 7569 if it is different. Another thing to watch for is for is the batteries that aren't "genuine" Dell batteries. I saw many that didn't even claim to be Dell batteries and I haven't used one of those so I don't know if it will work or if the laptop will refuse to use one of those. Dell says that genuine Dell batteries are only available from them, but the one I bought identifies as a genuine Dell battery in the Power Manager app and works OK.

    I have a dell Inspiron chromebook 7486 and having trouble finding a battery. My charger cable works fine but the laptop itself won’t charge. Any idea if this is the charging port that is messed up or the battery?
    I had to bend the charger a bit for it to charge for a bit but that method stopped working after a bit.

    • @cdsmith
      @cdsmith  Před 3 lety

      My charger adapter actually developed a break in the wires near the end that plugs into the laptop and for a while I had to bend the wire a bit to find the position that made connection. Eventually that stopped working and I had to buy a replacement power adapter. When I did, I bought a higher wattage one that charges the battery even faster. Yours could be that or it could be the port in the laptop. Or it could be that the laptop thinks the battery is damaged and doesn't want to charge it. My 7569 had a light on the front edge that changes color when the power adapter is plugged in and working. If yours has something like that, it would indicate if the charger has a good connection to the laptop or not. Also, you could check to see if yours has the Dell Power Manager app installed. That app will tell you the condition of your battery, and if it needs to be replaced, and when the power adapter is plugged in it should show if it is trying to charge the battery.

  • @BRicker2
    @BRicker2 Před 4 lety

    Hey Carl, I have a Dell 15 7573 so I assume it would be the same battery. Can you tell me if these Dell 7000 series will operate without a battery, while just using AC power adapter? I have an Asus laptop that does. Just wondering. Thanks.

    • @cdsmith
      @cdsmith  Před 4 lety +1

      I'm not sure if the 7573 uses the same battery or not. I found a battery site that shows a 56 Watt Hour 4 cell battery for the 7573, but then I found a CZcams video that shows the inside and you can clearly see the 42 Wh three cell battery like mine. Maybe the best thing to do is to take the bottom cover off yours and see what battery it has inside. That's what I did with mine when I wanted to replace it. I'm not sure if it would operate on AC without the battery installed. Most laptops will, and in the old days, when you could just push a latch and detach the battery, some people would do that on purpose to try to save charge cycles on the battery when the laptop was mainly being used at a desk. But lately I have seen laptops (like my older Toshiba in my other videos) with built in batteries that have no CMOS backup battery, because they think you don't need a CMOS backup battery when the main battery is not supposed to be removable by the user. In that case when you remove the main battery you lose your CMOS settings like boot order and the hardware clock settings. But these Dell Inspirons do have a CMOS backup battery so that shouldn't be a problem, so it may work fine.

Maybe that app will tell you if there is something wrong with the battery. Just click the windows icon and type "Dell Power Manager Lite" and it should come up in the search.

    • @cdsmith
      @cdsmith  Před 4 lety +1

      So then the question is if the problem is with the battery or the motherboard or the BIOS. The easiest thing would be to buy a new battery but that is kind of expensive to do without knowing if it is really the problem. I guess the next thing I would try is to unplug and closely inspect the connector for the battery and where it plugs into the board to see if there are any problems with the pins in both connectors. Maybe clean the connectors with some alcohol.
      Another thing to try would be to clear the BIOS config settings or even reflash the BIOS but I don't think that is very likely to fix the problem.

    • @cdsmith
      @cdsmith  Před 4 lety +1

      I don't know if that is expected. I know many laptops will run on AC without the battery installed but I don't know if this one will. It might indicate a bigger problem than just the battery. You could spend a bunch on a replacement battery and find out it still doesn't turn on. I guess the first thing to check is obvious things like if the green LED on the power adapter block comes on when plugged in, and does the light on the front edge of the laptop come on or do any blinking when plugged in on AC (but I'm not sure what that light on the front will do when no battery is installed since it normally indicates charging). You could try plugging an external monitor into the HDMI port to see if you get any video that way. I've seen laptops that seem dead just because the backlight in the LCD panel has failed.

      Thanks for the info. I suppose in the old days when you could just pull a latch and pop the battery off the back or out of the bottom of a laptop, they had to design them to be able to operate with the battery removed as people would expect that. Now that the battery is not removable by normal users they don't need to design it that way. Maybe they even use the battery as part of the power regulation, or to provide extra power during peak CPU usage times.

    I replaced my battery back in October and recently like a week ago the laptop just died. AC adapter LED doesn't light up, power button does nothing. It's possible that battery just crapped out or is it maybe the motherboard or fan just died?

    • @cdsmith
      @cdsmith  Před 4 lety

      That's a strange problem. First issue is that even if you have a problem with the laptop, the green LED on the power adapter should light up when it is plugged in on AC. Check anything you can with the adapter -- if the power cord is plugged tightly into the adapter and the outlet it's plugged into actually works. And check it while not plugged into the laptop, just in case the laptop is causing a problem. If the cord is plugged into the brick properly and you know the wall outlet works you might need a new adapter. But then there's the laptop. Even with a bad power adapter it should be able to run off battery. In normal use the laptop should shut down before the battery is completely dead, and so the battery should retain enough charge to at least power up to that BIOS screen that warns you that your battery is too low to boot up the laptop. So it's likely you have a problem with both the laptop and the charger. Which makes me wonder if the laptop had an issue that somehow also killed the power adapter. Which makes me worry that if you just buy a new power adapter it won't fix the problem and maybe you could even damage the new adapter if the laptop somehow had a fault that damaged it. On the other hand, you can find the power adapters fairly cheaply online. I found one on eBay for 12 dollars so it wouldn't cost much to get one and see if it fixes your problems.

    • @cdsmith
      @cdsmith  Před 4 lety

      You should be able to just buy an external USB adapter that looks like an external hard drive enclosure. One that is for M.2 drives. Just remove the drive and install it in the external enclosure and you should be able to plug it into another PC and get at your data. It will end up just working like a big flash drive. I don't actually have one for M.2 style drives so I can't make a specific recommendation. In general, Startech has a good reputation for this kind of product, but with a quick Amazon search I found a lot of USB to M.2 SSD adapters. Any of them would probably work but since I don't have a specific recommendation I would suggest looking at the reviews to see if any of them have bad reviews. You can get a cheap one that is just a circuit board with a USB connector on the end, or you can spend a bit more to get the nice one with an enclosure like an external drive and you could even continue to use the drive as a backup drive, and maybe get some value from the dead laptop by using it's drive as an external drive.

    My mother is frantic about it.

    • @cdsmith
      @cdsmith  Před 3 lety

      The data on the hard drive is not maintained by the power from the battery, so you should be able to replace the battery without losing any data. However, you should back up anything important before doing any repair work like this, because you can't anticipate what might go wrong. You could do something clumsy like drop your screwdriver on the motherboard and crack a chip. Or accidentally dump your coffee into the thing while it's open. You might think that you wouldn't do something like that, but that's what everyone thinks before an accident happens. Including me. :) So back up anything important. Everyone should be doing that anyway on a regular basis.

      @cdsmith  Před 3 lety

      It's always a bit scary to have to pull on a connector that doesn't seem to want to come out. I even broke a ribbon cable connector once because I thought it was the type where you slide the locking part to the side and it turned out to be the type where you lift it and it rotates up away from the cable. So in general, I recommend studying each connector carefully to determine the proper procedure for removing a cable. But in this case, with my battery, it is just a pull to remove type. Mine wasn't very hard to pull free, but if you have one that is not, it might be better to do as you suggest and use a small screwdriver on the connector to lever against the shell it plugs into. But be careful not to contact any of the pins in the connector and short out the battery. Even a momentary short could melt wires in the cable or damage pins.

      The model number does matter. I don't think it has to be a genuine Dell but it has to be the right model because there is a chip in the battery that the laptop checks to make sure it's right. Also probably has to be the right model to properly fit and have the right style of connector.

      Nope. The files on the hard drive do not require battery power to be maintained. There is some info in the BIOS settings that need power, like the time and date and some settings, but that is maintained by a little coin cell battery so that should be retained OK as well. However, it is still a good idea to back up your important files before doing a repair like this. You never know what kind of mishaps can occur that you wouldn't even think of.

    To this battery give your computer more running time? Than the original time of 6 hours?
    I recently bought a Inspiron 7500 2n1 black and the battery life barely last through one of my college lectures. The class is about 1hr and 30 minutes long and my battery drains from 100% to 21% - 15%. All I am doing is typing on google docs and surfing the web.

    • @cdsmith
      @cdsmith  Před 3 lety +1

      The original time was around 5 hours and with the new battery it was getting close to 7 hours when I did the switch. This is with light web browsing, word processing, spreadsheet, stuff like that, not games or video playback. Dell sells numerous different laptops under the 7500 2 in 1 name so I don't know how yours should compare, but it sounds like you aren't getting near the battery life I would expect. One thing you can do is launch the Task Manager and let it run in the background and if you see the battery draining check the task manager to see what is using the most processor time. Windows 10 task manager even has a column called "Power Usage Trend" that can tell you what apps are using the most power. This might let you know what is sucking up your battery power.

    • @cdsmith
      @cdsmith  Před 3 lety

      Excessive CPU use is a fault of the operating system, not the laptop. I've fought that a lot with Windows 10, where I find some background Windows process sucking up 30% of my CPU for like 10 minutes for no good reason. I've tried changing settings like going into the task scheduler and setting Windows Defender to not do full disk virus scans when the laptop is on battery, but it seems Microsoft thinks they know better and settings like that revert back to the way they want them when updates occur. I've thought about installing a Linux distribution just to see how much longer it lasts on battery. As for the side vents, do you mean the little square ones toward the front end of the laptop (toward the bottom in the view in my video)? I think those are just for sound to get out from the speakers that are right behind them.

    • @cdsmith
      @cdsmith  Před 4 lety

      Hmmm... You're not the first one to comment with a problem getting the screws out. My theory before was that the threaded inserts that they screw into are loose and spinning with the screw as you turn the screw. If the inserts are loose you may still be able to get the back off by removing the rest of the screws then carefully going around the edge popping loose the cover from where it snaps together. If the inserts are loose they might come out of their holes with the cover. But if that works then I'm not sure what to do to fix the situation. It depends on how they are broken. On other broken devices where I've seen this I have been successful at gluing the threaded inserts back in place with super glue or epoxy.

      @@cdsmith I found a video that helps with this problem, apparently the 7573 model has a chassis which attaches the top 6 screws to the back cover, so you can only remove the bottom 4 screws completely. For everyone who had this problem, I strongly recommend checking out xlearntechnow's video on it, but the gist is that you remove the bottom 4 screws, but leave in the top 6 which are closer to the vents (make sure you unscrew them as far as you can), and then you use a thin plastic object like a card or a guitar pick to pry open the back cover, starting with the section closer to the vents, and the remaining 6 screws come off with the cover. Other than this issue which it seems like was particular to my model, your video was very helpful and I appreciate your reply and efforts to help the situation.

      @cdsmith  Před 4 lety

      Swelling can affect many kinds of lithium ion batteries. I don't know if this particular one is more prone to swelling than other kinds of lithium ion batteries or not. But in general what is happening is that as the battery charges and discharges it wears out and the chemical reaction that goes back and forth with each cycle is not fully completing each time. This makes the gas as a byproduct of the reaction.
