this came out in 1974-75. This 'mini film' as Queen called it was pretty much the first 'music video'. Queen put this together because the show 'Top of the Pops" wouldnt let them perform this song on air since it was too long, so Queen produced it with their own money to help promote the song against the label's wishes. Also when Queen first started touring Freddie Mercury wanted the band to follow a 'black and/or white' theme. Meaning that for years they ALL dressed in either black or white at every concert. Obviously that changed as time went on, but one thing that's never changed is that Brian May(lead guitarist) has never cut his hair short. Queen has never realy explained what this song is about, closest was when Freddie said that it came from 3 song ideas that he joined together & other time he talked about it having something to do with the faust Opera, which is fitting since the album was called "Night At The Opera". R.I.P. Freddie Mercury you are truly missed. The Greatest Front main in history

I'm glad you mentioned that it was like 3 songs in one. That's exactly what a rhapsody is. It's a piece of music that has different musical themes and styles combined to make a cohesive whole. Listen to George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" and that will also give a good definition of what a rhapsody is.

Besides being an Astrophysicist, he is also a renowned expert (and historian) of Stereoscopic 3D photography - and his work with NASA and the European Space Agency has involved the compiling of 3D-viewable photographs and video derived from the raw data and images being sent back to Earth from various missions.
He has published multiple books of stereoscopic photographs - historical images from the Space Race to reach the Moon , his own stereo-photos he took over his years of touring in Queen, derived images of cosmic clouds from astrophotographer J.P. Metsavaino 😂- he owns London Stereoscopic Company which sells books, viewers, image cards, etc.
He has also begun his own Brian May Guitars (aka BMG) that sells a range of guitars (and basses) based upon his original handmade iconic Red Special. He has both less-expensive models and more-expensive ones, so to appeal to a wide range of aspiring players.
Let’s also not forget he is an ardent animal rescuer/rights activist, giving generously of his time, talents, voice, money and *connections* to push for the end to fox hunting, the end to widespread culling of the UK’s badger population , and to protect the hedgehog population.
All in all, Brian is a multi-talented genius with wide ranging interests and passions… and I wonder when the man ever sleeps ! 😊

Welcome little brother to the magical world of Queen!
Freddy composed and wrote the lyrics to this masterpiece.
He also sang all the parts in the music video.
If you want to see a brilliant piece of history watch 'Live aid 1985, Queen' it's 21 minute slot in a massive concert in the UK & USA that 1.4 BILLION people (it off 4.6 billion) watched live on TV and 72,000 people were in Wembley stadium in London.
I think I've watched people react to it at least 30-40 times, twice yesterday lol

This came out when I was 9 years old. I remember a of lot radio stations wouldn't play it at first because it was so long, but it got to number one in the music charts in the U.K. 'The Top 40' which was on the radio every Sunday evening. You would listen and wait to see which song was at the top of the charts at number 1, this song was number one for weeks. It was also one of the first music videos I remember seeing on TV. This meant Queen could tour, and the video could be played on shows like Top of the Pops because they couldn't appear live. Brings back so many memories. NICELY framed points about the power of the lyrics and the passion behind the song. Killer line, " ...I sometimes wish I'd never been born at all." When Freddie's handwritten lyrics of this song were on display, he had penciled a box around the "Nothing really matters to me." So you nailed it. When you talked about listening to this while driving in a car, I got another Queen song you might like. Completely different, pure FUN - COOL CAT (Queen official lyric video - never done live. Just promise me you'll turn up the volume for a bass line you don't want to miss.

If you're going to check out this era, try Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir" and "Whole Lotta Love." Many more greats from them, but that's a start. Or the Rolling Stones' "Sympathy for the Devil" and "Gimme Shelter." Those are a good place to start after checking out Elvis. Rock goes through a lot of transformations. Rock and Roll (that's Elvis and his ilk), Rock (This is where you start hearing heavier beats and lasts through the 70s (less so in the 80s and 90s), which shares times with Punk music (really wild screamers mostly from Britain) but is then taken over by New Wave in the 80s (A lot of synthesized music, more melodious, and quite different from other rock genres), then comes Grunge (synthesizer gone, back to basics garage band type music with a drummer, lead guitarist, rhythm guitarist, and bass--hard hitting and then is quickly swallowed up by a very similar Alternative music for the rest of the 90s). Later half of the 90s and early 2000s you get Nu Metal (one of my favorites, combines rap and absolutely slamming rock), and then Death Metal, Hardcore (and a slew of other names of similar genre. Not so crazy about this one, personally. It's less on melodies and more on rapid jumping from one riff to the next.)
If you decide to take the journey, you'll hear some of the greatest music ever. Songs that will become a part of who you are--everything from poignant to marching-to-war music that will jolt your T levels beyond whatever you've experienced before. Nature provides the best drugs.

The acapella opening was only lead singer, Freddie, singing all harmonies which were multitracked together. The "operatic" section were the band overdubbing the harmonies multiple times to create a choral effect. Three vocalists, four instruments and a gong. Queen!
(Since you mentioned Freddie's white silk suit, it sold at an auction of his belongings last September for $ 158,000 USD. The working lyrics manuscript for Bohemian Rhapsody sold for $ 1.7 Million and the snake bracelet that got a close-up during the piano sequence....$ 873,000.!)

I truly enjoyed watching the both of you experience the music of the greatest frontman and band to ever grace the stage, but without headphones or buds you're missing the magic of what went on in the studio. I hope you react to more Queen, because this is pure talent, all of them. No auto tune was never used because it hadn't been invented yet. 👍👑💙 ps you both are hilarious!

This reminds me of when you show a friend a song that you really love and you're just looking over at him like, "You get it? You get it, though?"

@9:19 “It’s like three different songs!”; this is the essence of a “rhapsody,” it meanders, like a river, taking us on a musical journey.

This song/music video was released in 1975. The clothes and hair are glam rock style.

Can you imagine being a kid in the UK watching this on top of the pops.[ Killer Queen ] was the first time I saw Freddy and fell in love with him. I have the feeling he was talking about coming out being gay. He had a background that it would have been difficult to do this. That's my take on this song. The whole band are extremely talented. He was very reserved in person but did not suffer fools. loved his cats. Beautiful man.

I had heard that this was his coming out story too. The "I just killed a man" was killing his father by telling his dad that he was gay. It was the hardest thing he ever did and he was afraid it would ruin his relationship with his dad.

I believe that too. I think that's why he always acted like it was just a couple of songs he threw together and understated the song so much. But it was clearly VERY important to him. He put everything into it AND would only let it be played in its entirety. That shows it meant so much to him.

You young un's don't know that this song was used in so many movies, so powerful it is. No idea what that sound does to you in person. I've never been, but only at dances as a young person.

Every time I hear this song, it is very physical for me. I am playing air guitar. I am playing air piano, air drums and waving my hands around like a conductor. It is a joyful experience, even though it is such a sad song. so glad to hear young people enjoy it as much as I do. I am 69 years old and it makes me feel young again.

One of the greatest vocal talents to ever walk the earth! Every member of this band will live in infamy! Do some research because they are literally pretty much highly educated genius in other fields! You will see this in the movie “Wayne’s World” after the movie came out I do believe (or after Live Aid” This song hit # 1 on the charts for the 2nd time….. years apart!
