- I hunker down from Tropical Storm Philippe in Mark's Cove, in the lovely Ship Harbor, Nova Scotia. Brilliant sunny weather soon returns, but fair winds, even in October, are hard to come by. Returning southwest along the Nova Scotia Atlantic coast one encounters persistent headwinds. The sailor has to pick his windows.

This channel is a rare treat among the many formulaic 'sailing' channels around today. It's Eric Aanderaa's tag line in practice: no bullshit - just sailing. No vain 20-30 something pointing a camera up her nose talking about feelings. No make-believe weather window we 'wait' three months for, then complain about the experience of sailing when it does come. (when our visas expire) On an honest to God blue water boat with proper lines. No engine, no push button sailing, no spastic 'made for TV' editing full of music and sound effects and wiki page narratives. Just a man and his craft, the way it should be.
Thanks mate! You just wrote my mission statement.
I totally agree.
Right on!
I second that.. most you tube sailors will wait and wait..then complain that they have no wind.. or instead of 5 knots we got 12..poor us and give us an audience. This channel is a gem to those that watch how it's done.
Hi Kevin
Mark and I get the navionics out so we can see where you have anchored. Some of your anchorages have been not to far from where we anchored! We always look forward to seeing your next video. Take care.
Hi Cindy, how do you like Navionics? I don't like the fact that you have to rent the charts, but that's happening with Open CPN now too. Plus Navionics is a one stop shop, you don't have to go to different suppliers for different chart areas.
@@howtosailoceans1423 Navionics has been good, however they recently reduced the number of devices that they allow you to run it on from 5 to 2. We find that a bit restrictive, so we’ve been trying out TZ iBoat, which looks good, and with extensive chart coverage too. We’ll get a chance to put TZ to the test when we get back on the water this spring.
Thanks for the video Kevin! Great stuff
Yeah about 5:40 seeing those waves breaking down wind makes my stress meter peg
Kevin, nomatter how long you have sailed or over how many lakes and oceans, you always can learn something new!
Sail On!⛵️🇺🇲
I have sailed in Nova Scotia the last decade and one thing I have learned. The wind forecasts are never accurate. Not bad for direction but off many times on wind strength. Loving the videos!
Awesome- watching now - have a great day
Inspiring!!! I've been watching this channel for years. Inspired me to start my own! Fair winds cap.
Thanks for stopping by, best with the channel!
Sailing the " Rock Garden" that is the Maritimes engineless is only for those at the very top of the Master Mariner.
October 8th!!!!! like we want a bit more real time than over 4 months ago. October 2023 is so yesterday.
After watching your channel, Kevin, I don't think I'll be able to reach for the key on my diesel without some degree of shame. As always, it's a pleasure to see what you're up to. I'm very much looking forward to seeing how you extricated yourself from the pitiless jaws of the Atlantic Maritimes.
"... the pitiless jaws of the Atlantic Maritimes" Nice turn of phrase! Yes, there's lots of things to hit in those parts and few of them are soft. Looks like some snow headed your way, though it looks like Boston is going to get most of it.
A fine reminder from the guy slathering on SPF 50! Feels like beach sand being rubbed in the wound.
@@michaelgullikson5235 Come to think of it, it's been nothing but sunny and warm for the past week ...
@@howtosailoceans1423 Grrrrr. Well, since I can't quite get there yet, I will very much be looking forward to hearing about your experiences. For what it is worth, what do you think of folding bicycles for those who cruise? Despite the risk of being mowed down in a foreign land, the idea certainly has appeal. What do you think?
@@michaelgullikson5235 It I had the storage space, absolutely.
So wonderful to see my familiar waters in Nova Scotia being navigated by an expert like Kevin, By the way, if you're back in Ship Harbour some time and need a hidey-hole, Long Cove on Wolfe Island (on the chart you showed) is great. We were in there during some untidy weather a few years back and barely felt a thing.
I take it Long Cove is on the east side of Wolfe Island. The chart only shows three feet in there, but it's not very detailed. Obviously a bit a local knowledge (you are the second person who recommended it to me).
I don't have the chart in front of me but by memory there was 10ft or more. And we were well within the cove, which is on the East side of Wolfe. Maybe other Nova Scotians would have that detail to hand.
Thankyou Kevin, you show us the many different moods of the outdoors on the water, I love those shots of sun under boom, cheers
Thank you, Kevin. I love how you make sailing look like a breeze. 😮
Safe sailing.
Enjoyed! Atlantic coast Oct/ Nov….not for the squeamish! Hope all is well in KW. Thanks, Andrew
Thanks Andrew. How are the Bahamas treating you and Stan? Still haven't made it to Key West, waiting on packages ...
@@howtosailoceans1423 ha! Waiting on the wind to veer ssw tonight and will sail out of Lee Stocking for Georgetown and groceries! Waiting on weather…I do a lot of it! Be safe!
@@reloadncharge9907 Sounds good! Yes, looks like a weak front passing over the Keys tonight.
Again, great work!
Thanks for the ride, Skipper. (as always)
"At least for the normal folks". ... LOL .... We must be mad then...
Indeed.
thanks, Kevin...
Thanks for stopping by, John.
Baby ruth looks fine reminds me of8 foot walker nay which i rowed and carry ed to Bahamas among the 10000 miles i sailedy pearson32 Magic
I sure know how to get my self into trouble,,,, and I have faith in my trusty diesel engine. However im not sure I'm smart enough to start it in time. (Or so my wife tells me)
Fantastic sailing video once again Kevin.
Best regards from Jarle
Lol. Engines are far more reliable today. I can remember the gasoline inboards back when I sailed with my dad. That was always hit or miss.
Oh I wish I had known you were there, I'd have brought you a case of beer! Yup, lots of rocks and ledges around there. That beach you passed on Wolfe's Island is spectacular, but the entrance to it's bay is kinda sketchy...
Kevin has went this far without an engine, why get one now. Just another maintenance item. I like purist sailing he does. He always has Mr. Tohatsu for those calms. Keep on trucking Kevin. You heading down to Puerto Rico?
"If you don't have a reliable diesel engine to get you out of trouble"........Well get one then!
Guess he doesn't choose to imitate you.
Kevin might get one, when he's about 90. Anything to distance himself from a nursing home ; )
Lol! Naw, just get a smaller boat I can row ...
Nice video. Did you retrieve your second anchor with your dinghy or did you recover both anchors from the deck of Ruth Avery?
Recovered from the deck. Hard to pull up a well set anchor from the dink.
Old Spice
Hi Kevin..you don't have to worry about the cold narly N Atlantic now. I say you should be cuddled up to a hot young island girl. I know that I would be!Lol 😊 Stay safe!
Why are you so far behind? So people can't come find you to bring you chowder?
