  • A calm morning just outside the Great Round Shoal channel becomes a brisk slog down Nantucket Sound to Vineyard Haven. There I conclude my two and a half day passage from Maine, combating the cold with a roaring fire in the Dickinson heater and a hot meal on the stove. Ah, contentment. I shall enjoy some late fall (November) cruising on Buzzards Bay while searching for a weather window to jump to Bermuda.

    Always like the racing between you two. Looking great. I believe with the code zero you could have eeked out that win. All in all great passage. Looking forward to your Bermuda passage

      Yeah, in the beginning the Code 0 would probably have gotten me far enough ahead to ensure victory at the other end ...

    Vineyard Haven is a great place to drop hook. Been there many times. I’ve been set back into Vineyard Sound in Quicks a few times. Much slower on the bay side. Watch out for the Willi-Wahs.

      Yeah, that current rips through Vineyard Sound. No shelter from an easterly though, unless you are inside the breakwall or go into the lagoon (or Tashmoo).

    There were recently two Alberg 35 footers on Ebay auction donations both with working diesels 1 in greater San Diego and 1 in Virginia (still up) going for very little money. View of the cabin with the heater on is comforting. Thanks.

    Firstly, I am impressed with your strength to pass Nantucket and head for the vineyard. And then, I thought I saw Charis, and I was rewarded. The old slightly unfurled jib trick…. Loved that with a good chuckle. A few strings in there and you provided a fine end of the day escape. Thank you!

      @@howtosailoceans1423 Salvador is a long way from Mindelo, sailing at the right time of year (Jeanuary), possibly riding the NE trades through the doldrums. You only get 2 x 90 day visa, probably will not be here when you arrive. It is not like the Caribbean.

    • @SavingMaverick55
      @SavingMaverick55 Před 5 měsíci

      @howtosailoceans1423 Thanks! With my very limited sailing experience, motoring through the canal is just fine by me. I wouldn't want to maneuver a big heavy wooden ketch through there under sail even if it was allowed. Too much current, too narrow.

      Gilmer and Alberg were both classically trained Naval Archtects - Annapolis and Gothenburg respectively. Both started with the concept of the North Sea hull - Atkins and Archer influenced. Both hardened the bilge turn and straightened the aft runs. Alberg went in for long overhangs to suit the CCA rule trends. Different above the waterline, but very similar below.
