    When Woody talks about "healthier lunches" he is truly speaking from a place of ignorance. "Haha these crazy republicans getting mad at that?" No Woody, it was us who were actually still in high school when it happened and all they did was cut our portions. I had to start buying food from another place every day because I could not get enough to feel full at school and could not stay focused because of it.

    Born in '92, went to two private schools my whole life. Preschool-8th, then high school for two years until I dropped out and did the GED. First school we didn't have food. You brought your own lunch, and you bought milk. You'd bring it in a lunchbox, Pre-5 had stalls in the hallway outside their rooms and they ate in homeroom. 6-8 was a transition period to get kids ready for high school, so you got lockers. You got your books, got your lunch out of your locker and the day's second half of books and went to homeroom, no trips between periods allowed for no particular reason.
    High school we finally got normal lunch like the public school kids, but we still had to pay daily. Now, I DESPISE food. Like I hate literally 99% of the edible material on planet Earth for human beings. But my school was actually alright. You usually had two options each day, pizza was the usual constant, a side of French fries (occasionally tater tots) and a large soda for $5. Chicken tenders were alright, must be from the same place as a restaurant in town because they're the same, weird but still good in a nostalgic way. Like a dry pizza pocket consistency with a punch of salty flesh. Nuggets (medallions more like) were straight up fire, only rivaled by the Personal Pizza which was my order 90% of the time. 2 pizza slices every few weeks were done by a local family place, they were alright. Then I remember a really rare spaghetti dish and one or twice a month taco that no on was every thrilled about neither of with I ate. Maybe burgers or something but I don't eat them so I wouldn't even remember if they had them.
    Usually smuggled food from home to eat at school, then pocket the $15-25 bucks a week I was supposed to be getting food and then parlay it either flipping drugs in school or YuGiOh/Pokemon cards/videos online for marijuana and cigarette money. Fries nearly always went to my bro would I'd chill with before and after school. He'd usually be waiting around after for his mom to get off work, so I'd stay and we'd get baked, figured a daily fry for smoke outs was fair trade.

    • @Zenon0K
      @Zenon0K Před 2 lety

      And as far as stealing goes, things were always locked up except for two things. One, we'd constantly steal their lighters to use. And second, sometime they forgot to turn off the soda machine. So there were a couple times were we absolutely raided that thing. One time someone randomly had 2 litter bottles and he got 3 kids filling up bottles and like 8 kids running all over the school finding more random kids letting them know the machine was a go today. We were just handing out bottles and bottles of soda to kids like it was an Army regiment finding water in the jungle and making a production line.
      But the Holy Fucking Motherload happened once while I was there after school one day. Someone found out that the freezer was unlocked, so like 5 kids just started taking whatever they could find and running stuff outside before coming back for more. Boxes and boxes of personal pizzas, French fries, chicken, potato chips, cookies, cheese, sauce.

    No. You didn’t experience Michelle Obama ruining it. 2nd grade we had amazing food that was like chicken nuggets and we had grill out days where the principal would cook real hotdogs and burgers. Now we have rotten milk and undercooked food because they got no funding for food and they’re trying to save money. I don’t want to have to pick between spaghetti that’s been burnt into a brick or enchiladas that aren’t thawed out right. I had quite a few of those “field trips” where you had to pay for everything that day, including admission and food. During a handful of them my mom called me in sick for the day, then took me to the same place herself. She knew I’d get a lot more out of it being able to do whatever the fuck we wanted instead of following a group. We’d get to see the whole zoo, and I’d talk to classmates and they’d tell me “We only got to see the Africa exhibit and the ocean exhibit because Billy wouldn’t shut his mouth.”
    My mother also did this numerous days when no field trip was planned. She’d call me in sick to take me to the zoo or a museum for the day. And honestly I learned a lot more from that than being in class sometimes. I was always a step ahead of everyone else in grade school so those days taught me more than the class could.

The first one actually had a sub counter where it was essentially a subway just with better ingredients and my school after that had a different hot meal every day and loads of sandwich and panini options etc. However my primary school when I was a little kid served the most budget food, I think most the of the meat consisted of scrotum and labia.

    The problem with Michelle Obama’s “healthy school lunch” plan is that it outlined minimal and maximal nutritional requirements (between x and y amount of carbs, less than z calories, at least v portions of vegetables) which in and of itself isn’t bad, but brought about some issues. For one, schools with low budgets often source food from an outside vendor, meaning that school’s lunches are essentially TV dinners. They’re pre-prepped frozen dishes that the cafeteria workers just heat up and serve. When these guidelines were enacted, those manufacturers had to find ways to make TV dinners healthy. Because of the fact that TV dinners are inherently full of preservatives and unhealthy ingredients, this meant that quality of ingredients was cut across the board. White flour switched to the cheapest whole grain possible. Fats were almost entirely eliminated. Sodium levels were cut. Now, as you can imagine, a TV dinner that’s been made worse in order to be “healthy” is going to make kids think that healthy food tastes disgusting. And it did.
    This wasn’t as much of a problem in schools that had the budget to create meals from scratch, as even if they had to make some substitutions, those meals would always usurp their frozen counterparts.

    I had processed food in elementary school when I lived in a big city and it wasn't very good. But in middle school we had a option to get a slice of Pizza Hut pizza or Taco Bell burrito if we didn't want the regular school lunch. In high school I moved to another state in a small town with a lot less students. The food was way better bc it was homemade but was only like 150 kids in my whole high school and in middle school before I moved from had 2,000 students. So I see why the food was homemade bc a lot less people. The small town I lived in didn't have many fast food options so most of the time even when I was senior I stayed and at lunch at the school. I was the only senior that did that lol.
