  • Both from Irish families and both natives of Glasgow, Houghton and Nevin went down different paths at international level.
    At our BoyleSports Roadshow at The Back Page pub in Phibsborough, Dublin, they told Kevin Kilbane why they went for Ireland and Scotland respectively

    Its 2021 in America the Irish diaspora is celebrated as a culture but yet in Scotland were still treated with distain. Proud to be an Irishman even with an accent like Pat and Ray.

      Fair play to Ray Houghton for sticking to his guns, had a fine career which he can be very proud of. Scotland royally screwed up missing out on him.

    I think Nevin is wrong. Houghton was a player who saw a lot of the ball, and was encouraged to beat his man, and come inside from the wing. If Nevin had an opportunity there he would have prospered with it, but a good guy, and understand why he felt more Scottish than the rest of the family

  • @kennymoffat
    @kennymoffat Před rokem

    Not sure I am completely buying this from Ray Houghton. He was 24 and had never had a full cap from Scotland. He probably thought that he didn't have a shot with Scotland, who had not shortage of top midfield players at that time, and so took the call from Ireland when it came his way.
    Not convinced on the story about Roxburgh not picking English based players either. He was the U16 coach when Scotland won the Euros in 1982, and that team had a number of English based players, as did his later full Scotland teams. I suspect he was just being overlooked by Roxburgh because he had better options.

      There have been times when people of Scottish descent represented Scotland. Sean Lineen is from New Zealand and played for Scotland at rugby. Richard Gough is South African and Don Huthcison is English and they played football for Scotland. It works both ways.

    Kilbane is a Dummy.
    He crucified Rice for eventually choosing England to pursue his International career,and here he is months and months ago listening to former players with strong Irish connections explaining to him their reasons for selecting Ireland or Scotland.The difference between Houghton,Nevin
    versus Kilbane is that they would have easily been selected for either country,absolutely no question,Kilbane would never in a million years have been asked to play for England,he wasn’t good enough to have had that dilemma.

      CJ Yes, and he arguably had the best years of his career afterwards- he won the PFA Player of the Year award in 1993, starred at two world cups, was outstanding when Villa stopped United doing the treble in 1994. Pearce too was an outstanding player but was selected more often at full back if memory serves.
      Denis Irwin was probably the best full back in the Premier League in the 1990s and his medal tally demonstrates that. A very good free kick taker and crosser of the ball too, only for David Beckham emerging he would have racked up some goal tally for a defender. So yes, a better footballer than Graeme Le Saux.
