  • What is pyloric stenosis? Where is the blockage? What do the symptoms look like and how is it different from reflux or spitting up in babies?

I think that important to mention the change in fluid balance
    Hypochloremia (loss of HCL)
    Hypokalaemia
    Hyponatraemia and
    Metabolic alkalosis

Thank you and I completely agree - these are important electrolyte imbalances to keep in mind, especially when approaching supportive treatment. Good idea for potential follow-up video or a general discussion on physiology of persistent vomiting.
Cool dynamic profile image, by the way!

    Hi Dr. Amy,
Is spitting up clear liquid common with this? My son is turning 4 months old on the 18th. He was born 5 pounds and 2 oz, so gaining weight has been a problem for him since before he was born. He would spit up after we bottle fed him (breastmilk) so we have been holding him up for 30 mins after each feeding. He use to vomit or spit up a lot when I burped him over my shoulder but I started burping him on my lap and it has improved. The problem I'm having is that not too long or even an hour or two after feeding, he will spit up clear liquid. Like it's water shooting out of a syringe. It's not shooting across the room like the "exorcist" but you can tell it's forceful and he makes a face while he does it. I'm worried he'll choke in his sleep from this and I hate seeing him in discomfort. Plus, I feel like this could be the reason he's slowly gaining weight, he just hit 10 pounds. I brought this up to my doctor and she suggested oatmeal in his bottle and being a first time mom, I asked many moms and they advised that was a bad idea.
I hope to hear from you!

Hi there! So there are limits to what I can advise you over the internet, unless I'm your son's actual doctor, but I do want to point out that normal weight gain for newborns is to double their birth weight around 5-6 months. So it looks like he is actually perfectly on track to do that, if not already. Since the weight growth is actually okay, it makes everything a lot more optimistic.
Since he's already almost doubling his birth weight at 4 months, one of the many reasons he's spitting up more could actually be because he's taking in too much. Statistically, choking from spitting up is not something you need to worry about with a term and otherwise healthy baby, but again I encourage you to discuss with your own doctor, since he/she knows the whole medical history. Unfortunately I can't give you more specific advice without knowing you guys, but I would talk to your doctor about baby-led-weaning and see if he can start trying some foods. I agree thickening the milk in the bottle is no longer the recommended thing to do. Good luck to you!

Oh my gosh. Dr. Amy, can you help me? My daughter is almost 14 now and I can't watch her suffer anymore! I don't know what is wrong with her. She projectile vomited as a baby regular enfamil and soy. I breast fed at the beginning, but I dont remember if it happened then. Anyway, no problems through her toddler years up until about 5. That is when this heartburn thing started up. It's been on and off ever since. She regurgitates her food and spits constantly. She says she's working the mucus out of her throat. Anything mildly acidic burns her throat. I remember a point when she had blood tinged mucus. I made sure it wasn't respiratory related. I'm not going to feed her antacids. I have never figured out what is wrong with her. I am worried about her throat and vocal cords being scarred and damaged. Her voice is kinda low for a young girl. I even had a doctor suggest she may have a food allergy, but we cut out milk and gluten and still no change. I need help. She's too young to be dealing with this constant spitting amd regurgitating food amd mucus. It breaks my heart. 😢 She's only 13 and this has gone on so long!
