I would find it very hard to believe that people would be upset if they cut the frog fall guys, costa del sol, and cactuar goblin minigame from part 3. Obviously i can appreciate that they put alot of effort and love into making this game. But they can allocate resources elsewhere.

I know it's a tough pill for Square to swallow in the short term, but I really think you play the long game with this project. When all is said and done, and you factor in bundles, discounts, and multiple platforms, this trilogy is a MASSIVE amount of content that they can make decent money on for decades. Will it light the world on fire? No. They haven't "lit the world on fire" since 1997. Will it become a profitable, worthwhile venture? Yes. This entire project is a metaphor for the changing video game landscape. We are watching a project react to these changes in real time. It's fascinating, really. Something to be studied years from now: "This is what video games were like in 2015. This is what they are like in 2028. Look at how this single project has been impacted by this evolving landscape."

Yeah they have the opportunity to hit the series out of the park with high metacritic scores and player reception from 1 to 2 to 3. Few trilogies manage this. And then they can sell the whole thing as one FF7 Remake. Release remasters and what not. Worlds your oyster SE. But none of that will mean shit if they half ass or even hold back on the last part. The series will always be remembered as something that started strong and ended quietly. And no one that would have initially been pursueded to by the 'trilogy pack' would do so now.

I was always under the impression that part 3 will have a higher ratio of main story content to side content. There's a lot of story to get through on disc 2, and if they trim anything from that it'll hurt the quality of the story. It makes sense to be a bit leaner on side content the next time around. On the other hand, the story content from disc 1 that formed the bulk of Rebirth mostly involved seeing the world for the first time and chasing Sephiroth. It made sense to flesh out that part of the game with character-driven side quests, and I think the developers succeeded very well in that area. Finally, as for minigames, I'm pretty much done with people complaining. The vast majority of them are optional, and no one is entitled to 100% a game as fast as they want to every time. There's a lot of very difficult content in Rebirth that was meant to hold us over for at least 3 years before the next part.

I don't think loyalty to the brand is an issue; FF fandom is loyal to their favorite game, not the brand as a whole. The FF brand is constantly targeted by its own "fandom" and usually gets complains and bad reviews only due to thinks not bein to their liking. The problem with PS5 exclusives is an amalgamation of issues that starts with resellers, availability of chips, price increases and end with constant economy recessions. IMHO, If SE wants to make a killer game, it will need to be a new IP, because at the moment the FF fandom is poison 😢

I was very young but definitely lived online and helped build a lot of the community in the forums that spoke on the “golden age” of FF. I think a lot of FF fans will tell you they love the franchise as a whole because the heart of FF love is diversity. Loving the fact each game is its own story with rich stories and characters. Can you have a favorite? Of course, but to say it stops there is premature. Look at ff14 for example, it’s all about FF lore within its own world that people love.
SE’s biggest issue right now is loyalty to their own brand and up till now not serving it up very well. They’re paying their dues catching up to what they lost out on for so many years with everything after 12.

I'm kind of in the 'too much side content' camp for Rebirth. While I enjoyed most of the minigames, there was just way too much overall. We have the Gold Saucer as a mini game hub to go to, there really wasn't a need to pile up mini game upon mini game in the overworld as well. By the time I reached Cosmo Canyon I basically skipped on all the side content because I just wanted to finish the freaking story. So if they decide to drop some of the side content in favor of the story and pacing, I really wouldn't mind that. There is something as 'too much' as well and a little less would benefit part 3 in my opinion.

The funny thing about all of this is that Square Enix is going to learn that there is no potential for a magical sales spike to astronomical heights for future game releases of theirs. Whether they are multiplatform or not. They learned that after FFXV when the bulk of the game’s sales were on PlayStation vs Xbox & PC *(8M+ on PS4 out of 10M+ overall)* which resulted in mainline Final Fantasy releases going primarily exclusive to PlayStation. Let SQEX go multiplatform though. Drop the Switch exclusives too, because there are A LOT of them. Let’s see how this goes.

If multi-platforming isn't going to help them, then we may just have to face the fact that Square's days as an independent company are gravely numbered. It seriously wouldn't shock me in the slightest if by the end of the decade Square Enix becomes Sony's property.

To be fair, most jrpg console players opted for PS4 -- even JRPG fans who bought xbox ones. It makes sense that most FF fans who have both consoles would opt for the PS4 version. PC on the other hand had a staggered release 2 years after. I think SE would have done much better with simultaneous PC launches with FF16 and ESPECIALLY FF7R, because they pissed off ps4 owners with the PS5-exclusive DLC for Yuffie. They are going to have to cast the wider net to salvage all that hard work on the FF7R trilogy, and it makes absolute sense to pursue multiplat. I would not be surprised to see FF7R get ported over to Switch 2. They've already proven lower textures will still do well with ports on switch, and it's better than nothing. Money is literally there on the table.

Why do people attribute the game’s underperformance to solely to it being exclusive?
Why don’t people factor in the departure from the original that people of the original have issues with?
Honestly as much as I love the new take they are taking with the trilogy, I don’t believe it’s it being exclusive that’s the issue.
Let’s not forget that SE is NOTORIOUS for having unrealistic performance expectations for their big games.
Remember what they thought about tomb raider and it selling 15mil was considered a failure by SE? And there’s examples of a few other games where the game sold well, even charted, but they still conferred them failures because of their lofty expectations.
Their financial mess has more to do with their poor management and endeavors in NFTs, chasing that GaaS dragon and canceling projects they sunk money into.

Because it is being critically acclaimed, it scored 92 with critics and 9.0 with users
So something doesnt add up. A game being critically acclaimed should sell well - the only explanation is limited marketability and commercial potential.
Along with it being a PS exclusive, it is also part 2 of a remake, and FF while being well known is still a niche IP among the mainstream culture of gaming. Every time a new FF game comes out, there are always people asking "do I have to play the other FF games to play this one?" So take that and amplify it with Rebirth being a sequel of a remake, its going to limit its sales too. The Remake trilogy will sell well over time. It is a unique product with a unique situation. Once the the third and final game comes out, not only will the full picture be seen but it will be ready for all to experience and PS exclusivity will be over. A case in point is the original FFVII and FFX. Despite their reputation today, they did not actually sell highly when they were first released. FVII got around by word of mouth and accumulated sales over 2 decades. As for FFX, it was bundled and rebundled and remastered on every console and also accumulated massive sales. The same thing will happen with the remake trilogy.

If you look at SEs report they put out, despite the lower than expected sales (according to SEs lofty expectations), XVI and rebirth are still the only games they made money on despite them being exclusive to ps5. I've heard plenty of people kind of roll their eyes at the thought of waiting 3 to 4 years inbetween releases. I'm sure after all 3 games are out Square will sell some kind of package with all 3 of them together and maybe that will get more people buying the games, knowing they can play the whole story at once.

I think we all care deeply about the series at this point. Its natural we want the trilogy to go out with a bang after two stellar entries where one happened to be the best reviewed FF in two decades. And with that comes allot of uncertainty because sadly the video game climate isn't good, online discourse is clickbait and drama focused and FF has gathered allot of very weird old fans that have stopped buying any of their games for years now but still actively stalk the franchise and taint public perception.
But I have to stick with Max here who said that the budget is fixed and I agree with NSP when he says that they would obliterate their company if suddenly FF7R Part 3 releases as a scope contained dud. At the end of the day FF7 is a company pride thing. You worry about the sales over the long run. Even Witcher 3 had a huge amount of its sales come in years down the line with the Netflix show and community appreciation for the game.
I will say this though. Enough is enough with the weird old 'FF fans' that loathe any direction SE takes yet keep engaging in online discussion. It has created a very negative stigma around the franchise and online discussion. Everytime I see a video covering whatever FF game it's full of people chiming into the comments at length at their displeasure. These people usually engage in days long arguments with people. I've been guilty of this aswell. You want to discuss because you hope that the other side sees reason. But I think there's more to the issue than just people lacking a different perspective.

what's actually truly weird is people thinking a large corporation such as square enix is somehow always at the edge of going financially backrupt. This is the only company that gets this delusional conclusion and people dramatize it. Its like we are looking at this company as some tiny indie studio.
large corporations or enterprises/industries like square, ubisoft, EA, google, hollywood etc do not go under. Trust in the conspiracy that there is always corrupted money lying around. Everywhere. This is the reality. Too large to fail.
"I think we all care deeply about the series at this point."
people care about it because people do not like to not know. The continual mystery, not knowing and to see what they will change versus not change is why people are staying. FF is also a magnet of drama and people love that.
but a genuine deep care for the series? nope. This is not specifically FF. Its 2024. Through an abundance of entertainment comes the consequence of dilution and oversaturation. Onto the next thing. Old FF7 came from a different era where people retained real passion to their hobbies. People dream in their heads of the things they love. They fanfic in their heads, buy all the merchandise and this instills the product into the culture.
Not today. Not this generation. I repeat. Its 2024.
Once all is said and done, the drama peters out. Everything becomes quiet. People will move on and you will realize people cared more about the unknown, the drama that surrounds the product and the company rather than to truly immerse themselves into the fantasy they are consuming.

Im sure the project will not be affected as they are committed to give the full efforts on the 3rd part for the PS5. If those games wants to come out later on other platforms, then it wil be some decision by the same SE. But FFR-3 will not be multiplatform from the get go. Maybe other FF games projects like FF9 Remake/Remaster could be multiplatform. Other game franchises like KH4 could be multiplatform too as similar to the 3rd entry. Most people are blaming Sony, but the problem is the same SE with their unreal sales expectations for their games.
For example, Final Fantasy 13, a 2010 old game, sold around 7.8M total as for 2018, being a multiplatform game. Retro FF games which was Playstation exclusives for decades has come to Gamepass and they're available for Switch too. So, the problem is not exclusivity nor multiplatform. Avengers is a non FF multiplatform game and people know what happen to that game, it sold like shit. Star Ocean The Divine Force (SO6) is multiplatform too. FF 7 Remake is already on PC. Spin offs FF games like Crisis Core Reunion are multiplatform and Stragers of Paradise is multiplatform too (except Switch)

They already fucked up by including DEI and using SBI for their ethics team. They'd have to give a very good apology and prove that they aren't going that route for Remake 3 to get people already turned off back on track. Still, SE released a censor patch 4 years after Remake's release, so It's best to wait about 5 years after Remake 3 to buy it, just in case SE turns their back on gamers again.

No one, to my knowledge, wanted a 1-to-1 remake. The pre-release advertising painted FF7Remake as a full-overhaul remake with new graphics, presentation and combat, and there was almost nothing but hype for that. What disappointed a lot of people was the timeline stuff that makes it no longer really a remake and also made it alienating to a lot of newcomers.
I'm a complete newcomer to Final Fantasy, and I bought FF7Remake because I thought a modern remake of FF7 with new presentation and combat would be a perfect starting point. I liked the new combat and presentation, and I even liked stuff like the Jessie chapter, but the game lost me the moment it started doing timeline stuff that may as well have screamed, "Come back after you've played FF7 to understand and appreciate this!".

I remember my roommate watching me play ff7 remake. They were super interested in it and I was really excited to get to show them ff7 finally (as trying to play the original gives me a massive headache)
We were both loving it (though I did have to often explain that the arbiters and sephiroth were done really weirdly) through most of the game.
But my God. When we got to Ff7 Kingdom hearts 789/6 2.0 and the story telling completely fell apart.
We both just went: "BUT WHY?!" and it really killed the experience for both of us. I felt cheated as I really wanted a faithful remake.
But I realized given her reaction, that newcomers were getting cheated AWAY WORSE. As not only did this game showcase really poor writing at the end, souring a newbies idea of final fantasy, but it ALSO spoils the original for them, without adding anything worth while.
So they are just left with a weird "what the hell just happened?" At the ending of both of these games. But also, they now lose the ability to go experience the original story for themselves without the spoilers from these games.
      It's honestly really sad.
As much as I want to experience rebirths supposed emaculate gameplay, I refuse to spend my money on it. I watched the ending and don't like it.
So I'm just gonna let the trilogy play out without contributing. Square won't learn anything. But I'm still showing them how I feel with my wallet.

From what I've learned from others who actually did like Part 2, the same issue did actually happen again. The game was just too large, and it would have been a better experience being a condensed out game to polish out events, and remove most of the fluff from it.
This would have also saved on the budges, and made the game by far more profitable.

in my opinion, The sale decrease can be caused by four factors as follow :
    1. Aging fans. most of the FF7 fans are both xennials and millenials who grew up in PS1/PS2 era in their childhood. they are in their 30s, or nearly to 40s working professionally in their office and most of their time are dedicated to their jobs and their family (if they are already married). they hardly have time to play video games with 100+ hours. This game unfortunately brings little to the newer fans like Gen Z who prefer simpler games in their mobile phone or PC.
    2. Too Expensive. PS5 is very expensive, as well as this game. with this disruption of economic situation caused by post-pandemic and two regional wars gamers are very averse to purchase the latest game in normal price. however if Square enix decides to port FF7 rebirth (and FF16) into PC next year sales will be likely to be recovered.
    3. PC Gamers. nowadays gamers prefer to play games in their PC because of its better performance compared to the consoles. they are waiting for this game to be released for PC.
    4. Game content. unfortunately, including myself this game only reaches Disc 1 on PS1 where Aerith is killed by Sephiroth. we expect more storyline at least at the half of Disc 2. too many mini games as well and lack of level grinding.

Cloud goes on a mission, gets reunited with Tifa and meets Aerith in Midgar, then later Cloud gets a date with character in the Gold Saucer that the player romances and finally Aerith's death from Sephiroth. All these events happen in the remake and original so if this was a sequel, none of these events would have happened in the present and would all be the past. There are several issues with Rebirth, taking for example, the whole "too much game"...that's precisely one of the issues, that's not too much game, is too much MINI GAMES and not nearly enough actual game; Way too much filler.
Instead of giving us new abilities, they made us re-learn a whole bunch of good ones we had, and take away completely other great ones, like Tifa's starshower.
They sold and banked on the cliffhanger on remake, and the delivery was extremely underwhelming. Zack is not as much as part of the game as we were implied we we're going to have and made this absolute convoluted mind f*** right at the end, that it felt like they lost their way at the last minute
there are parts which felt completely unnecessary, long and repetitive, like "let's try and justify this expense". Not once did I feel this with remake. For example, Roche, he was just there cause they needed to fill that somehow, didn't came as organically as it did in remake.
They still killed Aerith, and in a more narrative part of the game, they push the idea that Aerith has somehow completely moved on from Zack and is unaffected by his "presence" (although they do kinda go back and forth a tad on that). Basically, they didn't delivered on what they sold at the end of remake.
And this is just off the top of my head

Like, they would have likely began working on the technical underpinnings of the weapon fights ages ago - and sure, they could save a bit of money by scrapping them so they don't have to put together the accompanying gameplay and fmvs, but from a technical side of things those encounters have already been bought and paid for, so they represent a huge sunk cost.

The problem is that most people that are complaining don't seem to realise that just because a certain scene isn't there, it doesn't mean they just scrapped it. They don't look at the entire project, just at the game that is in front of them and draw their conclusions without having all the information. There's a reason they didn't show those important scenes yet and it's simply because those scenes will be in part 3 when Cloud will have come to terms with what actually happened. I figure that will be a huge part of the Lifestream scene. I wouldn't even be surprised if they turn the scene where he lays Aerith to rest in the lake into a playable segment just to hammer in the message a little more. Him talking to and seeing a dead Aerith is exactly what he does in Advent Children, except that there he knows she's dead, whereas in Rebirth he's in complete denial. Are you telling me that, if you go and buy something, for example, a McDonalds, and then they remove things you were expecting because "they know better and you just have to understand that you only have to wait, but they don't explain or say why in an understandable way you would still buy it? and not even complain about it?
Anyway, all I said is that, they convoluted the story on purpose, most likely, because they thought people would be more engaged, which actually doesn't work, it has been proved over and over again, not only in the west, but also on the east. There is a huge difference between leaving open questions to be answered later than just not explaining things just to look mysterious and smart. And also, I'm not complaining that they removed things, I'm complaining about the exectution of the idea. You may have the greatest idea in the universe, but if it's not properly implemented, it's going to fail miserably. As I mentioned, all of this was fixable by just adding a few lines of dialog here and there and that would have make things much more fluid and understandable, and still leave room for theory crafting and all that, but they didn't, as you say, it was a choice, and a poor at best, stupid at worst. Keep in mind, I'm only speaking about the story telling part of the game, the gameplay part they have really nailed it, in that they have surpassed expectations and so far haven't disappointed.

The new FF7 Trilogy has a few problems...
    1. It was not a straight remake that people were expecting, and SE did a crap job expressing that it would not be a 1-to-1.
    2. The ending of Remake didn't generate good word of mouth. It was quite divisive.
    3. Rebirth is a middle game with, yet again, another odd ending that while better than Remake doesn't generate pure positive word of mouth. Common thing I hear and have even said is, "95% of Rebirth is absolutely amazing, but the final 5% is weird and easily confusing.".
    4. Games are a luxury item, and money is really tight for a lot of people, so there are for sure a lot of people that are either holding out for it to drop in price OR will just wait for part 3 and the inevitable "collection" to drop before they'll buy.

The fact that its not a "1 to 1" remake is what makes the game still relevant and people keep talking about it after years of being released. The game being secretly a sequel is never a problem.

@phrofile3613 I think it not being a 1-to-1 is fine, especially after Rebirth, but it has undoubtedly made some people take a "wait and see" stance.
Anecdotal, but I personally know quite a few people that won't bother until it's finished because they don't want to wait years. They'd rather binge it

Some fans okay with it what they dont like is that they introduce multiverse like zack is alive on another time line .

Nobody, to my knowledge, was expecting a "1-to-1" remake; the pre-release advertising made it very clear that FF7R would have all new presentation and combat, as well as additional story content. However, the type of additional story content that was being advertised was stuff like the Jessie chapter; i.e. content that would still enable the game to be a remake. The timeline nonsense wasn't advertised.
Another problem that the trilogy has is that the timeline stuff makes it very alienating to newcomers. I should know: I am one such newcomer, and the timeline stuff in FF7Remake may as well have been a big neon sign saying, "Come back after you've played FF7".

@matthewmuir8884 I'm an OG fan as it was my first Final Fantasy back in 97 and I absolutely love the expanded story and character bits, but I was one of the people that thought it would be a 1-to-1 story beat wise.
When I say 1-to-1 that's completely separate of gameplay , but not from core story.
The whispers were off-putting, seeing Sephiroth so early and fighting him as a boss at the end of Midgar, Barret getting stabbed and revived, Zack some how living, the KH style fight against a manifestation of "fate" are all out of left field for OG players and absolutely was not conveyed in the marketing that those kind of drastic changes were in store. It turned a lot of people off as it felt like a total deviation.

It was to many mini games and not enough boss fights for me. That’s my only problem with the game. I really hope they don’t do that for the 3rd one.

Seeing as FFVII Remake isnt even a real RPG I find it hard to believe that ANYONE could say it's the best EVER. Also turning entire sections of the OG game into mini-games and adding the card game from FF8 wasn't needed, nor is a mess of additional story about new character that shoudn't been added or characters no one wanted additional story for. All they needed to do and ALL most FF7 fans wanted was a remaster or remake the tightened up the gameplay and modernized the combat. The issue here is that most Devs want to "make it their own" and ITS NOT! Have some respect for games that already existed as well as their fanbases. Straying to far from the OG game will cause it to fail look at RE3 Remake.

Im primarily a PC gamer. I bought a PS4 Pro when I had more flexible income, specifically for certain exclusives...almost all of which have now come out on PC. FF7 being one of them. I even bought a second copy of FF7 remake for PC to play intergrade. I will NOT buy a PS5. Also, I seem to remember a time when Square promised that the full game would come out in phases for PS4 to completion. Maybe I was wrong. In any case, this exclusivity shit with third party developers is fucking dumb. Its not the 90s or early 2000s anymore. Unless Sony, MS or Nintendo owns that specific studio, there is no reason for a developer to stick to console exclusivity.

I bought a PS5 specifically to play FF7 Rebirth. Also bought Remake on day one. Sony gets a lot of my money for these games. I hope they can keep going strong.

Splitting 1 game into 3 over like 15 years was always a bad idea to being with, too many things can go wrong in between games.

The only problem with Rebirth and part3 is that you need to know FF7OG and Remake story. For us, FF fans is great. For other people, it might be harder to understand

From what I’ve seen a lot of people prefer to play it on PC because of mods. Assuming that this is the case, if rebirth happens to pop up on PC then it’ll prove that exclusivity is the problem

this could end up being a good thing for FF7. FF7 rebirth is the first FF i lost interest in finishing it because it is way too bloated, formulaic and does not respect player time. Maybe a smaller budget can drive them to focus on what really matters

Exclusive platform allows them to concentrate on a single version of hardware and optimize it... I dont really care if part 3 is multiplatform at release as long as they dont compromise performance to make it work on other platforms...

I think that this will be a win for them. They are acknowledging what it is people want and seeming to gear up to give it to them. I doubt they will skimp on the quality of the mainline FF series, rather than scraping their non”HD” games.

fewer mini-games and just 1-2 open world map will do, not for every chapter... ultimately we are looking for more storytelling than side content gaming for the finale

I personally would very much like to see less minigames in Part 3. It's not gonna break the game to have mingames, but I feel like rather than cutting The Forgotten City as an explorable area, they should have cut the minigames.
