- The world is full of trickery! Reproductions are everywhere and not every seller is as honest as they could be!! Here's a basic guide on picking a genuine antique oil or kerosene lamp from a more modern reproduction one.

Thanks, learned a lot from this. I just bought an oil lamp for £25 in a Welsh antique shop. Was told it was from the 20s. Just noticed it has a screw top. It also says on the metal part and the glass base. Warning, only use paraffin. Gutted a bit, saying that. I still think it's worth the money as oil lamps are getting very expensive now. Thanks for your advice 👍🏻
Yeah, it does seem your lamp was misrepresented! Thanks for watching 😊
Thanks for the video. I find lots of lamp parts metal detecting. For some reason people of the old days junked these a lot. I have found several burners smashed into the ground, they must have been plentiful back on the old days.
Yep CDK, lamp parts turn up quite often in tips! Most bottle diggers find lamp bits and pieces quite often. I once dug out an old farm well and a certain level down had a layer of lamps, some even complete!! Turns out the age of the bottles dated the layer to around the 1920s and that happened to be when electric power first came to the area! No need for lamps anymore - let's chuck them down the well with the rubbish!
Thanks for your comment! Cheers, Chris :)
I'll tell ya how. Lol for the most elaborate design. Modern people aren't capable of the beauty the older generations were
Beauty and quality Phillip! 👍😊
I like the second one from right hands. 😍
Yes, that's my favourite too! 😀👍
Thank you, very helpful!
Thanks, glad it was helpful 😊

That's great D Teun! Thanks for watching 👍😊
@@TheUltimateRecycler do you know where the reproduction lamp comes from the one with screw clear glass?
I mran i live in Sweden
I love each and every one of my Aladdin lamps.💡 & my gone with the wind lamps.😍
They are beautiful aren't they 😊👍
@@TheUltimateRecycler yes, I collect gone with the wind oil lamps too.
@@TheUltimateRecycler I put a night light in them and light them day and night .
That's a great idea! 👍
@@TheUltimateRecycler Thanks .But, I always keep them original OIL LAMPS WITH THEIR ORIGINAL BURNERS .I just carefully place a night light it the tops & bottoms to dimly light them up.
When were the reproductions made? I have a light blue one that doesn't have a screw on wick & the brass looks rough. I assume it's still a reproduction b/c it's shaped like the tall clear one? Thanks for this video!🤩
Reproductions were usually from the 1970s onwards. Yours may be an original - can you post a pic to the facebook group?
@@TheUltimateRecycler Yes I will do that when I get home. ☺️
Muy bueno
Gracias
Thank you for the video. I need help. I inherited my great grandfathers oil lamp (very very old) and I cannot figure out how to add kerosene oil. The top part will not come off of the glass base.
Thanks Sara. The collar should stay fixed to the glass bowl and the burner should unscrew from this collar. They do become quite stuck so it will take some gentle but firm twisting!
Thank you for the video. I have a collection of lamps that have been handed down through my family, and a couple of them do have screw-on burners. So by your definition, they are reproductions. I'm pretty sure that they are older than the 1970s - do you know when they started making the screw-on burners? (It wouldn't surprise me if they were from the 50's or possibly even 60's ... but at what point is something a reproduction vs. authentic?)
It is possible they were made just before the 70s, for sure - but it's a good general rule of thumb. Reproduction verses authentic is an interesting discussion as one could argue that the antique lamps in this video are simply improved reproductions of earlier whale-oil lamps! Likewise, genuine antique Victorian furniture from the 1800s are mostly just reproductions of Elizabethan and Georgian era furniture!
So perhaps we should just think of the newer items as simply more recent developments!
Thanks for watching and commenting 😊
I wish I could find more information on how to date the chimney. If you have an original one it would be quite rare, right?
Yep, I would imagine most original chimneys have been broken and replaced over the years. Sometimes you find one with some small bubbles in the glass and slightly wavy manufacturing lines which would indicate a very old chimney.
@@TheUltimateRecycler Well, thanks! I can't stop picking so it's time to sell! I'm planning to open a page on Facebook soon. Probably sell in box lots. Pass the savings on to youuuu! LOL.. Wish me luck!
@@Opaleyesopen Best of luck!! 😃
A balance between picking & selling is important! Just keep the best bits and constantly upgrade them is probably the best plan 👍
Howdy from Adelaide!
What fuel can I use in my kero lamps? The kero smell makes me quite sick.
Thanks, Louise.
Hi Louise! We burn citronella oil in a lamp on our deck as it helps keep the mozzies away! It can smoke a little though, but that's fine outside. Cheers, Chris
Hi I have just found the bottom part where the wick sits when I was out Metal detecting.. it was made of iron .. would you know what era this would be from (dates for U.K ) valuable? Thanks
Hard to tell without seeing a pic. You could post one to my facebook group.. 😊👍
@@TheUltimateRecycler Thanks for the reply..what's the Facebook group ?

How do you refill a lamp with a plastered collar?
The collar stays on the font and the burner unscrews from within the collar Sam 😊

Thanks DD, I'll take five stars anyday! 😁
