Really miss my JX75. Watching the video reminded me of all the issues I did have orver the life of it. 1) Replaced the thrown piston rod 2) Replaced tires 3) Engine Cluch was stuck, and always engaged (this is the one I couldn't fix and ended up selling it), 3) random replacments like broken gas cap. As much as I loved it, getting parts was a pain.
Parts are pricey for these and sometimes hard to find that is for sure! Thanks for sharing
Had two of them in mint condition this spring, one with a Briggs Quantum and one with the awesome ‘saki engine. Loved everything about them EXCEPT: 1) Couldn’t feather the drive, when you pull the lever it’s 0 to 60 burnout time on the lawn unless you want to select a speed at the end of every row, and 2) only goes to 3 1/2” cutting height and I needed 4” in summertime. Sold them both to a landscaper, other than those two issues they were nice though.
Thanks for sharing my friend!
Highly Recommend Jx75 or 14sb if you’re willing to take on restoration project. We have sold off all our name brand commercial new mowers and went all vintage John Deere mowers in my lawn service and can’t be happier with the quality of cut and the reliability of 25-30yr mower. Like the old saying goes they dont build them like they used to.
They sure don’t build them like they used to my friend! Very cool you went back to the old stuff!
I broke my handle by tightening too much it would cost $200 to replace, and my mower was 14pt push so I decided to buy new Honda self propelled. After 3 years in September my Honda blew up I had to go back to my John Deere and it stared up with fresh gas after a couple of pulls. It also comes with a tube for the oil change goes past the deck no spill. Bought a used Ariens lawn mower Kawasaki engine that is a beast too much engine with an oil filter.
Those older ones just last!
I bought my '93 14SB used in summer of "94 for $325. It's a JX75 with silver deck😀 Over the years I've put one belt on it, a couple of shift cables, BBC bearing and friction disk and one pair of new wheels. It has the oil filter option, and I run a Toyota/Denso F2/N1 filter same filter as my wife's '05 Prius! Cheap (currently Supertech) 5w30 full syn gets changed every other year. I know I should change the oil yearly, but then again, I should probably swap out the ORIGINAL spark plug, too😂😂...
Great vid, these are the greatest walk-behinds ever built.
Awesome my friend! I just Knabbed an oil filter assembly for my JD! Gonna install it in the spring! 👍
JB, It would be a sin to part out that JX75. I know you have several Mowers available to you but that thing is too good not to use and enjoy for the next 23 years.
Not ripping it down Jeffrey! Don’t you worry! She’s too pretty! Lol!
Hi JB. Very nice CZcams channel and a most instructive video. It's rare to see enthusiasts guy like you😃
From the start, I was mowing with a Kubota W4021 from 1985 but which broke down 15 days ago. Some parts being very complicated to find and the model being quite old, I did not want to incur costs on it. So I decided to look for a second-hand mower and that's when I came across your awesome video JB. So I found a 1998 JX85 with the famous 'saki FC150V engine, not used a lot and which has just been serviced. It looks like it come out from the dealership like in 1998 😎
Awesome my friend! Welcome to the channel! 👍
In 2015 I gave mine away free as I was moving to my new house and bought an ego. I just gave it to one of the guys who mowed lawns in our neighborhood. I used to take it for service every year so it was in perfect shape. Just figured I wouldn't be mowing a big yard with self propelled and had the new ego for the back up. What an idiot I was, as I bought a Honda this year to do my backyard by myself since we have a pool now and don't want clippings blown into the pool. I had the electric start too for the wife to use in case I was away and she needed to mow (she's only 4' 11 and cant pull a mower to start it being so short). 😭
Thanks for sharing this! 👍👍
Haha good story
Bought my JX75 in Sept. 1998 for $805. $20 for the oil filter adapter. Mower still works the same and starts on 1st or 2nd pull. Had to replace the float needle valve in 2007. Otherwise it was worth every penny and then some. Amsoil 10w-30 since 2003 and change the oil every 2 years. Oil still looks clean after 2 years. I sometimes remember to check the oil level. It is full when I do. Wife doesn't like it due to weight. Thanks for pointing out the handle bolts needing to be tightened frequently. Haven't checked in over 10yrs.
Awesome my friend! Thanks for sharing this info with the community! Those mowers are amazing! 👍
I did forget to mention that after 3yrs the valve cover leaked on bottom left bolt. Tried to tighten it but it was stripped. Talked to the shop I purchased it at and they mentioned it can only be fixed by replacing the head. I went to Autozone and purchased a drill, tap and helicoil kit for less than $10. Bolt has held tight since and oil only seeps a couple drops per season. Probably should have put a new gasket on. @@GarageGear
@@recycledpaul9728 awesome you were able to fix it my friend!
JB-LOVE THIS MOWER! (Have several myself so of course I would say that)... everything you said was spot on...EXCEPT: your height adjustment information was a bit misleading - the further forward you put the height adjusters (on the front the I position) is the highest cut height (approx 3.5") and the III is the lowest setting (near tee box height)...I liked that you mentioned the skid plates as an upgrade - I would also recommend finding and installing the spin-on oil filter kit...more oil/better cooling/longer oil life/better filtration...no point keeping the Honda or the Toro with that JD! If anyone wants to discuss this line of mowers more - pls comment and we can get a discussion going...as JB said - if you find one in good shape for little money - BUY IT...even with the parts from a JD dealer (which mine Crossroads Equipment-has been excellent and fairly priced), you will spend LESS than a new Personal Pace Toro with a chinese clone engine and have a way better mower in EVERY respect (except maybe the mulching finish-I will be exploring mulching blades and may make a video on this once tested) The heft of the OEM blades is incredible - but as JB says they bag THE BEST...I also rear discharge to get better better dispersal than the side chute - BUT do so at your own risk...I have a few CZcams videos on these mowers and links to others if anyone is interested let me know...Great video as always JB!
Appreciate you sharing all this info Kirk! I wasn’t sure on the exact heights of the mower deck and after looking them up 3.5 inches kept coming up but hey if it goes to four inches even better! 👍 that spin on oil filter is another nice feature if you can find one!
@@GarageGear I think you're right on the 3.5" JB...I will edit my post to reflect
@@kirkthebeerslinger I’ll double check too but pretty sure that’s what I read
@@GarageGear have a great day JB! Sadly, I came up pretty empty-handed on a search for the oil filter adapter also...I was hoping to find out the Kawasaki 180cc adapter would fit on the 150 engine but it doesn't look like it does... frequent (50hr) oil changes should keep these amazing engines running for a long long time (like starting first pull after 20+ years isn't already remarkable!) Cheers my friend!
@@kirkthebeerslinger those oil adapters are getting rarer by the day!have a great day as well my friend!
Morning JB. I’d definitely hang on to that beast! They don’t make them like that anymore. I had the JD silver anniversary edition that I think bought in early 1990’s. It came with a hose that connected to the oil discharge so that it didn’t spill oil on the machine. My Niece has it now and still runs like Deere. What’s up for the weekend? Cheers buddy!
Hey Jay! Awesome that she still has it! They can really run forever! Bike ride today, filming and closing up the pool! How about you?
Morning JB. Running some errands then probably watching the Bills game. Oh, and watering the front lawn. Had it aerated and over seeded last week. Enjoy the rest of the weekend buddy! GO BILLS!
@@jaybooth4815 very cool my friend! Have a good week! 👍👍
I've always liked spiral shaped decks for vacuuming clippings, there seems to be a trade off on them between suspending the cut clippings for multiple cuts vs vacuum/speed of cut clippings. Your Deere would probably excel at thick or tall grass. I wonder if a dual blade (like Honda uses) could provide the best of both worlds?
The factory blade gets really good vacuum and leaves a superior cut when bagging or if clippings are not too long discharging...I will be trying to find a mulching blade that fits as that is the weakest aspect of cutting - the Super Recycler does this the best in my experience
These mowers are definitely better baggers than mulchers with those decks! I wonder if the new Ballard blades would help the mulching a bit?
That John Deere is in great condition for 20+ years of age. Great review and feedback. Awesome tips on starting it, too. Have an awesome day, JB!
Appreciate the positive feedback salmomlox! Thanks for watching
I have a JS40. Not a commercial mower, but beefier than anything made today. Love my caster wheels on the front.
Those are a nice feature!
Hi JB also there is a drain hole on these I forgot to mention that before you just put the hose on the deck run the water and start the mower on its lowest deckheight and it will do the rest to wash out the deck underneath, yes these engines are the best, like I said before this is the last mower you will ever need to buy ever.
Right on my friend! 👍
@@GarageGear exactly, thar mower will out last anything new today, have a great day.
Great deal for $65. Gotta love the Kawasaki engines.
I know right??? They are unbeatable!!!👍
Looking for new mower but something that can easily go down to 3/4 inch or lower. Currently use a reel mower for extra low but this time of year I let it grow a bit taller like to hit it with a good push mower. Models that cut low?
Hey Tim! A lot of newer mowers only go as low as 1 inch. I’ll have to keep an eye out.
@@GarageGear yes that's about what I'm seeing most go down too. Seems that honda is perfect at 3/4 but getting hard to come by now discontinued :(

Hi JB. What is your opinion of the 33 in Cub/ Dewalt/Craftsman walk behind mower? I have a Timemaster and ready like it but this one looks good without spending a bundle of money on a commercial 36 in walk behind.
Thanks for your opinion!!!
I’m gonna look more into this mower but right off the bat anything craftsman nowadays is usually junk. Worth a look though to learn more about it. Have a good weekend Paul!
JB you have an old school Toro, old school Deere. Now your next mission should you choose to accept it is find a Snapper. Another old school well built mower. I had one years ago and traded it in . High Vac rear Bagger, big rear wheel rear drive aluminum deck.👍

JB what’s the best residential push mower ever made?
That’s a tough question! That’s gonna be between some Hondas, toro super recyclers and John Deere’s between the ninety’s and early 2000’s! Some say lawn boys were really good but never used them. I was always a big fan of the toro super recycler from the late 90’s.
That's pretty sharp..Can't they make more mowers with aluminum decks. I'll be keeping an eye out for one of them.
Not many out there made of aluminum nowadays! If you see them grab it fast!
Buying me one of these tomorrow on marketplace. It’s a 2003.
Grab it! You won’t be disappointed! 👍👍
JB, the FC150V is only 153cc. How does this compare to a 190cc Briggs intek that I have on my JS63? Just bought one of these for $50...it starts, but doesnt stay running. The only thing the owner mentioned was the self propelled is intermittent and not gaining much traction when on any sort of incline. I'm not sure if I fix this up to sell or keep it and sell my JS63
Hey killaman! The 153cc FC is plenty of power and far better built than the briggs. Don’t let the numbers fool you. If you clean the carb she should be good to go! I have a video on that that I filmed a long time ago. I would also check the gears inside the wheels to make sure they are in good shape. That might be where the problem is. Typically those transmissions are bullet proof. 👍
@@GarageGear hey man, thanks for the response! I will check all of that today. I'm hoping it's not the drive belt...that looks to be a pain in the ass to replace
@@killaman7592 no problem. yeah that is one Achilles heel of those mowers.

Hey pump! Parts are still available for these! Prices are usually on the higher end for parts. That is awesome my friend! Keep it around for a while. Better built than anything today!
I had a customer bring me one of these yesterday (5-7-2024) said it throws the belt off. The only problem I can see. Is they aren't using the grass catcher, causing the grass to build up on top of the transmission and getting between the belt and transmission pulley.
Hey Bert. Are the belt guides wide open? There are some belt guides that may be too loose on each side and can be pressed in just a little bit. Also is the belt too loose?
@@GarageGear
No sir. The belt guides seem to be in good position. I have used the machine myself and there wasn't a problem. The way I understand, it was taken to a John Deere dealer they looked at it and refused to work on it. They did put the belt back on. So if they readjusted the belt guides I don't know. I'm still thinking they were running it without the grass catcher. I'm planning on running it again today with some tall grass to see if it comes off. I know it says do not prop open the chute . However that may be the problem. I will also call the customer to be sure I under what conditions the belt comes off. The husband dropped the mower off and told me what his wife told him. When asked other questions, he didn't know. The mower looks like new a 2002, the belt looks good, when engaged the belt is tight. That's a great engine, you are correct about that. Thank you for your response it is greatly appreciated. I will let you know what I find. Again thanks for your response.

It’s all about the look for some people! 👍
I’m eyeing 2 right now but I don’t know if it’s this model but it’s a Deere.
Look for a jx75 or jx85 on the back of the deck! 👍👍
@@GarageGear I literally just got a JS26 today! It rained like hell today so I’ll have to wait to cut tomorrow and I’m excited!
@@Destroyer-Grizzly-BIH awesome let me know how you like it!
@@GarageGear Will do. Speaking of JX75, there’s one for sale for $170.
@@Destroyer-Grizzly-BIH I would give it a look! 👍
