For me, the very interesting question is why, were so much of the establishment against him? Was it because he promised to bring genuine democracy and a more egalitarian society to this country? Notice how silent the Guardian was at the time. Ditto with Julian Assange by the way.

It's an annoying quandary. Such a public service is vital to a society, however it gives the government too much influence, typically leading to it becoming a propoganda tool for the government of the time.
Unfortunately, it also tends to be pulled "right" more than "left" because of the external forces at play, so it becomes somewhat "balanced" with a left-wing government, but leans right when they're in government.
However, there's no better way of funding such content. Small indie's can't gather sufficient funding to do nearly as good of a job and they end up being influenced by their audience (who fund them), leading to ever more pigeon-holed perspectives.
Advertiser funded ... doesn't need explaining the issues.
Large, subscriber services end up as corporations, thus, see above.

There was a study at the time, I can't remember, that was featured ON the BBC about how bias the media was against Jeremy Corbyn, and they got a BBC spokeswoman to deny it with no facts or statistics to back her case on the BBC news channel as if that was evidence enough to refute it!
