M DP Haha yep, Thomas Cromwell desperately wanted Henry to marry a Protestant so he told the painter to make her look gorgeous. It ended up costing him his life.
If anyone is interested in a more theatrical explanation of the 6 wives of henry, theres currently a (incredibly well recieved) musical in the WestEnd (like broadway but in london) called "Six: the Musical". Its kind of like...spice girls meets royalty! The songs are pretty neat too! Each wife goes down the line explaining their situation and comparing their time with henry in a very concert-like manner. Its still currently running in the west end with one production about to open in chicago and another production (in boston i believe) due to open sometime this coming fall 2019! There are nine total songs (one for each wife and an openining and finalr song) and its all around fun show! ***check out the 2019 Olivier award performance for Six: the musical to get a medley of their opening and finale number to get an idea of what the show has to offer! Its pretty accurate too!***
The painter of the Anne of Cleves picture was Hans Holbein the Younger, one of the most famous painters of Europe at the time. And it's disputed if Anne was actually ugly. Many other people described her as attractive. However, she didn't speak english when she met Henry, she and wasn't familiar with english culture and customs, she wasn't very educated and most of all she had zero sexual experience.
Honestly, how many women in those days were actually good looking? Elizabeth I--could pass as a male. One of her childhood friends to be exact. Anne of Cleves had the traits of a good wife. But Henry quick to pass judgement and move on did not notice.
This is a good question: Henry is remembered for his unusual number of wives... But is this really a distraction, you know.... Like a "royal soap opera"? Real question is: Why was Henry VIII so powerful? Technically, he murdered (beheaded) two of his wives: Anne Bolelyn and Catherine Howard. All royal marriages then (and now) are based on political alliances (aim is to strengthen ties between noble families). It's always about power, money and influence... Noble families in Henry's reign played a "high-stakes" game to "win" affections of the king. This could backfire. Anne was a "reformer" who led Henry away from Holy Mother Church (Catholicism). With Anne, we're seeing beginnings of Reformation (move towards protestantism). She was accused of everything, including "witchcraft". More likely, she was an intelligent, passionate woman - Whom Henry favored, then grew tired of... Catherine Howard was only a teenager when she married Henry (She was actually Anne Bolelyn's cousin). Catherine H just didn't understand "high stakes" game she was playing, once she had king's favor. She was (crucially) from a large, catholic family of nobles. Rumors she had been "married" before and (it seems) she continued flirting after being wed to king Henry. This was very unwise "at court" in her position as "queen consort". This played into the hands of Protestant Faction at King Henry's court. They called for her execution and Henry (although upset) bought their story. What's really happening is Henry VIII was a tyrant and played off protestant and catholic forces during his reign. He often blamed women for not being able to give him "heirs", but it's well-known his ill-health affected his abilities to produce them. Peace. Thanks for reading.

I am actually related to Anne Bolyen. My 15th great grandmother was Mary Boleyn, sister of Anne Bolyen. My 14th great grandmother is Mary's daughter Catherine Carey, who a lot of people thinks may be the illegitimate daughter of Henry VIII. This makes Anne my double digit grandaunt. I believe Anne was innocent and my Cousin Katherine (Henry's fifth wife) got what was coming to her.
Also why do you think Kathryn Howard got what was coming for her. In the most simplistic terms she was beheaded because she was raped. You do know that?
The thing is.....I'm Asian............But I really enjoy watching British history, the story is very complicated but in the same time I like thier culture.
I have a head canon that Catherine Parr was a black widow, her first two husbands died, then Henry died while he was married to her. The way Henry threw his wives away like they weren’t even people was awful, it would be karmic justice if Catherine Parr “hastened” his death
Katherine Howard actually had an affair with Thomas Culpeper, a distant cousin or something. But based off of google and six the musical, they were just friends and he forced himself on her. She just wanted true love

Let’s not forget the king Henry kids son Edward died at the age of 15 Then marry became queen but her reign was short lived and people called her the Bloody Marry then.Elizabeth became queen and she was queen for 40 years and she was loved very much and she was merciful to her people..
In both cases the divorces were actually annulments. In the case Katherine of Aragon, Henry claimed that he should not have married her because she had been married to his brother previously (ignoring the passage in the Bible in which it says that the brother had no children, the surviving brother should his brother's widow) and in the second case because the marriage was not consummated (they nevet slept together).

I really liked this video, the exposition of the life of Henry VIII and his wives is very interesting and successful. very good, congratulations. I have read dozens of books about him and his wives and your video is accurate and at the same time very complete although it only lasts 12 minutes. the theme is so interesting that it would have been great a slightly longer video, but well, I liked it a lot. hopefully, in the future you will make a video dedicated to other very interesting characters also from that period, such as Thomas Cromwell, Thomas More or Thomas Wolsey, and already put to ask, hopefully one day make a video dedicated exclusively to the fall of Anne Boleyn and what really happened which is for me the most interesting queen of all his wives, although Catalina de Aragon and Catherine Parr were also very interesting. Thank you very much again for your video, I subscribed to your channel, it seems very interesting. best regards.
Actually he didn’t really think that Anna Of Cleaves was ugly, he dressed up as a pheasant to surprise her and she thought he was ugly and shared her opinion with everyone. So, he divorced her cause he was embarrassed but they stayed friends ish after they divorced and Anna of Cleaves was very close with both of the daughters, Mary and Elizabeth. 😁
I feel sad for Anne Boleyn because she was not guilty for that lie that the others told Henry VIII so she was not meant to be beheaded...she had another chance but it did not happen Henry is one evil man
Major error at about 1:13 in this 'history' lesson which I'm going to correct here and then I'm going to stop watching. If you can't get the facts correct in the first 2 minutes, this isn't worth my time. Catherine of Aragon was MARRIED to Prince Arthur and he died less than 6 months after the wedding. Catherine's prior marriage to Arthur was the reason Henry used with the Pope in his attempt to get the marriage annulled. His basis was a verse in Leviticus.
At some point, possibly. The funny thing is that I much prefer to read fiction and more often consult history books for reference and seldom read one cover to cover. I think that most people expect that I read history for pleasure, but that's not typically the case (although, predictably, I am a sucker for a good history lecture and could listen to a captivating speaker for hours on end).
Dear teacher, can you help me with this? I see elizabeth became the emperor. But why Henry The eighth Went so far away to try to get a son? In china there was only one women emperor in history. But the throne was obtained through her crafty usurp. not legitimate.
I noticed you didn't mention that the reason for the annulment with Anne of Cleves that King Henvry VIII used was that she was previously arranged to be married to the Duke of Lorraine. Not just that he didn't consummate the marriage. I think that in itself wasn't enough? But that he said he refrained because of her supposed to have been arranged to marry the Duke of Lorraine. But yes, it was all because he found her unattractive which is funny considering she had more to be repulsed by. LOL And there was talk that after they divorced, they did have "relations" and she had a child with Henry VIII. Of course it's mostly speculation, but because they remained good friends and he was having drama with his 5th wife, he supposedly would go back to Anne of Cleves for some midnight rendevous. ;)
I have a question, I know you are talking about the wives, but what about Mary Boleyn she gave birth to a son. Whatever happened to her son was it because she was unmarried?

It nothing strange back then if you go back in time to Ancient Roman Greece and Cleopatra days they all did the same thing putting innocent people on trial and accusing them for all kind of non sense going hearsay and speculation bull crap no kind of proof at all it doesn't matter if they innocent or not playing god with their lives putting them all to death but if noticed it every last one of those killers had a terrible horrible fate toward the end of their lives to be quite honest I don't feel sorry for any of them they got what was coming to it was pay back for the dirty and pain they inflicted on other people who did not deserve that karma is a bitch!
Yea torture was real bad in the middle ages, unlike a bit of Cuba Post 2001
