I've already recorded a lecture on Martin Luther, but I wanted to focus specifically on his doctrines in this segment, which I kind of glossed over in the survey lecture. In this lecture, I'll be discussing Martin Luther's three solae (Sola Scriptura, Sola Gratia, Sola Fide), the priesthood of all believers, and Luther's view of the Sacraments.

The work is after that you are saved by FAITH alone, like Abraham became: Friend of God because he believed in God's word!!!
But it is not work that saved our soul, because our works are like a rotten cloth ( rags), Jesus(sinless) accomplished the law & the prophet perfectly and gave his life voluntarily to give his blood for the sacrifice like the time of Moses (era) ( animal's sacrifices)that did not last too long instead of Jesus - Christ sacrifice was once & for all!!! 😁😍😀👍

that's not what James epistle is about,
first off James is talking to saved brethrens, James epistle is not a salvation epistle it is a descipling epistle, people need to study the "WHOLE" book of James not just one verse. it's amazing how many catholics and calvinist have used James 2 to justify works salvation. works are not a by product of faith,
catholics and calvinist cant ever tell you what the entire book of James is about or who it's written to, they have no clue.
one thing is sure Abraham didnt repeatedly offer ISSAC daily on the alter, Rahab didnt continually hide the spies daily.
theres no verse in James that says if you have no works your not saved and going to hell.

It’s pretty funny that Luther who preached faith alone, also was very well known to just give all his stuff away as someone needed it so much so that it irritated Katherine his wife who worked hard to gain those very things. But to Luther who had a big heart towards those in need didn’t see his possessions as his own, but as God’s gifts to him that he could distribute to his neighbor.

When people think James (Faith without works is dead) contradicts Paul (or by extension salvation by faith alone) I tend to get confused. If James believed faith alone didn't save then why would he look for works after a claim of faith?
If I say I'm a Christian and while im in a congregation I fight, argue, via for position and ignore the poor while favouring rich people (trying to create an elite class in the church rather than all being equal), why don't many people see that James is saying 'You say you're a Christian and believe in God - that's great but that claim alone gives me no real reason to believe you're a safe person to entrust with novice Christians to teach them and look after them'. Why cant people see that James is talking in a context where trusting someone's profession alone is insufficient to place them in a position of leadership to influence other Christians. Paul talks about this exact issue in the same way, Paul's leadership requirements are all about works, Paul's letters always seem to say when he saw their love he considered them brothers. Paul definitely talk about looking for good works to evidence true faith, he just says it in a more indirect way.

    Let me clarify some things
Both of "Saved only by grace" and "Faith without works is dead" go with eachother in perfect harmony
Salvaltion is by grace only, but when you are saved you want to do good works,it becomes part of your nature, speaking as saved by grace person, and i totaly agree on Martins view of will,it is in our sinfull nature to do wrong, but God can fix that nature by saving us.

this guy is wrong saying that Paul is saying that about him, he is not. Paul is teaching to others who would go out to convert.
That particular section is Romans 7, start reading it from 14 to 25 and you would understand on your own, without been misled by someone else's own opinion and agenda.
Now if you want to understand why only our faith in Jesus is our only way to salvation and the forgiveness to our sins, read Romans 1 to 8, there Paul explains very clearly our salvation is only on faith, not works...works is a fruit, a result of your faith but by no means is the way, and if one really believe in Jesus we would be one with him, and our spirit will give fruits in Jesus love.
      (John 14, 23 John 15, 12)
The way Paul explains is very openly and beautiful.
I can't understand why is much polemic about.
      Read also
      John 6, 29,
then read John 6, 32-33...here Jesus Himself is telling us that the law of Moses (work) is not the truth bread of life, but Him only.
then read John 6, 43-45, here Jesus says only the ones God sent to Jesus will believe in Him...and this is something that Jesus repeat when he is praying for Himself on John 17, 1- 5 when He is praying for His disciples on John 17, 5-19.
And for when he is praying for ALL BELIEVERS on John 17, 20-26, this prayer is very powerful, it show how much our Lord Jesus Christ loves us.
Luther was wright when he said we don't need priests or pastors or anyone else's to "interpret" the bible and Word of God for us, all we need is to repent from the heart and before start reading, to ask the Lord for the Holy Spirit to help us understand His Word.

Justification and Sanctification cannot be separated. There is no Justification without Sanctification and no Sanctification without Justification. Justification is a work of God the Father and the Holy Spirit in us but without us. Sanctification is a work of the Holy Spirit in us but NOT without us. that is why Faith without works is dead. Peace brother. I think you may want to read ephesians 2,10 as well so that you may find that perhaps luther and all protestants are missing st Paul's view of good works and how Christ wants us to performed them. Moreover, st Paul's reference to works are those of the Old Testament or Mosaic Law. St Paul knows that without acquairing virtue (goodworks) or without being charitable to others one can not be safed, because that is sin and sin breaks communion with Christ.

How is the doctrine "faith alone" contradicted by saying that the product of faith is works? In fact it would seem to be defining it more fully, not an opposing theme.
[Not particularly pertinent]: I understand that Luther may have not been a fan of the author of the book of James, but [IMHO] that does not influence the doctrine. As it is said in James: " We all stumble in many ways. Anyone who is never at fault in what they say is perfect, able to keep their whole body in check." and "Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts."

Tom Richey I tend to agree, but that would seem to be self serving because an unquestioning member would blindly accept the Roman Catholic Church which is seemingly a result of Constantine absorbing Christian forces into his own and then Roman Priests introducing pagan aspects and monopolizing the Word in order to profit. The reformation seems to be an appropriate purge of the monopolization, but not the pagan holidays, but I guess we'll just have to suffer through those.

Luther saved the Catholic Church from itself because they were really abusing their power and were starting to drastically change the teachings of Christ with indulgences. He made the Church more accountable to Catholics and it forced them to counter the corruption by bishops and popes. If Luther did not write those thesis I am sure they would have allowed people to buy sainthood.

So do the teachings of the first, second and third century church fathers mean nothing compared to him? because when you read people like Ignatius, Justin Martyr, Polycarp you get a very different view even more so when you consider that Ignatius and Polycarp had teaching from John. I based a lot of my views of the Catholic Church off of what Martin Luther taught then I learned about the early Church fathers and when you do that as I mentioned you get a very different picture painted and Martin Luther becomes pretty much non existent when it comes to theology.

Paul’s principal concern (all over Ephesians) is how the Jews and Gentiles relate in the people of God, was that Gentiles were to be included in the Covenant of the people of God, on equal footing with Jews, in spite of the fact that they didn’t keep the Mosaic Law.
Luthers question that he brings 1500 years later is how do I find a gracious God and do I have to perform moral good deeds or moral behavior (these are not Paul’s questions). These are Luthers questions that he reads into Paul’s texts (Luther is imposing and categorizing that were alien to Paul’s thoughts). Luther is worried that God would not love him, this is not at all Paul’s concern
Luthers questions are born out of a scrupulous conscious. Paul does NOT have a scrupulous conscience. Paul is not at all concerned about the things that Luther, or Calvin was worried about
Paul says that he is “conscious of nothing against myself”. Paul’s concern is how Jews and Gentiles will get along now that Gentiles don’t have to practice the Mosaic law

The conflict wasn’t originally with Luther and James, but with Paul and James. Paul and James didn’t agree. The gospel of straw reference is originally used by Paul himself, referencing a weaker gospel,.The truth is that there wasn’t a gospel, but several gospels. Paul letters are FULL of defense for what he called “my gospel” there wasn’t unanimity then, there isn’t now. People only want to pretend there was.

So, the OG 3 Solas ..
Sola Gracia, ONLY by God's Grace are you able to be forgiven, saved, and reconciled with God. Like you said, a gift is free, the person giving it has no obligation to give that gift to you in any way shape or form.
Sola Fide, By Faith Alone. You are only save by God's Grace, through faith. "..not by works so that no one can boast". And yes, "Faith without works is dead". But you CLEARLY haven't read the whole chapter. " If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it?In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead" (v.16-17). Like others have said, works should be apparent after their Salvation. If someone claims they're Christian, but hooks up with a bunch of women, and you see them get high all the time, it gets you to question like "I thought he went to church".
Sola Scriptura Scripture is THE authority for Christian Doctrine. Not the Pope, or your pastor, etc. Westminster Shorter Catecism says this " What rule hath God given to direct us how we may glorify and enjoy Him?
The Word of God, which is contained in the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments, is the only rule to direct us how we may glorify and enjoy Him.
So, only by grace you are save, only through faith, and scripture has the final say over all Doctrine. I see no flaw.

The one issue I would take with your presentation (which is excellent, by the way), is that sola does not mean "only." That would be "solo." It is not solo scriptura, it is sola scriptura - Scripture ALONE is the final authority, not the pope or the magisterium or the early Fathers. Sola gratia - Grace alone (through faith alone - sola fide) saves us and not our works, as in Eph. 2:8-9. Where Luther fell short of understanding, particularly when it comes to James, he could have solved had he included Ephesians 2:10: For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we would walk in them. We are not saved by our works but for good works. And we are saved by grace alone, through faith alone. Later reformers would add in Christ alone (sola Christus) and to the glory of God alone (soli deo gloria). For more in-depth understanding of the Solas of the Reformation, I highly recommend Terry L. Johnson's book "The Case for Traditional Protestantism" which covers the five solas in great depth.

Enjoying the Lectures. I have a Masters in Biblical Theology. This is a very easy apparent contradiction to solve. And its not a contradiction. WHO IS HE TALKING TO? THAT IS THE CONTEXT? Paul is evangelizing here. Speaking to people who have not yet become believers in the gospel of Jesus Christ. Ephesians 2:8-10 lists the three Solae's. IN HARMONY1) God declares His Sovereign, Authoritative WORD. (scripture alone for the basis of faith) 2) God did this by His grace alone- not because we did good works- (cross ref Titus chapter 3 for confirmation.)3) Since Spiritual death happened from Adam to all, (Gen Chapters 1-3) a dead man cannot do anything. He doesn't have faith except by the spiritual quickening (which happens at salvation) and revelation that comes from Hearing the WORD of God- (Romans Chapter 10) Through Jesus Christ- that is to say His finished work on the cross.James 2:14-25WHO IS HE TALKING TO ? WHAT IS THE CONTEXT? 1) James is talking to believers in Jesus Christ/ Follower's of the way/ Christians who have accepted the testimony of the bible/ the Holy text. James calls these believers brothers and sisters. "if any sees his brother or sister in need" 2) Ephesians 2:10 is actually where James picks up the thought. First is God's word, second is the grace of God to reveal its spiritual meaning, third is the Holy Spirit's power to quicken the dead spiritual man by faith in the word that was preached,- it ALL is ONLY the work of God through Christ Jesus that enables any of this to be so.3) Now that you are saved, some evidence of this is the good works that come from a changed heart-(those things He prepared in advance for you to do in Eph 2:10) but only God is qualified to say what good works are, whether the motives behind them truly come from Him and whether they are truly done to glorify Him. Abraham believed God first before he ever acted upon God's word. His belief was credited as righteousness, but proof that he believed was that despite God now telling him to sacrifice his only son, God had years before promised Abraham that he would be the father of many nations- Abraham did not waiver in his faith and offered Isaac as God commanded. In here is the harmony of it being all three "Solae's" and not either or. God Bless.

Faith alone cannot guarantee salvation. Nowhere can you find in the bible that you only need to have faith and no need for good works in order to be saved. It is clearly stated in the Book of James that faith should be confirmed with good works, NOT AUTOMATIC.
Does the bible say that that if you have faith, you automatically have good works? Even devils believed in Jesus and recognized Him as the Son of God during the time when Jesus exorcised possessed people. Yes those devils had faith and believed in Jesus but they did not follow His teachings to do good works. The books of Ephesians and Philippians state that we must strive until we reach the finish line.
That being said, clearly means we need to do good works to confirm our faith, not that faith alone will suffice. For WE WILL BE JUDGED ACCORDING TO OUR DEEDS, says the bible. It doesn't say that we will be judged according to our faith.
Thus, I returned to the Catholic faith after having been converted to a Pentecostal church. I did indepth

*MARTIN LUTHER - A GLARING CONTRADICTION OF "SOLO SCRIPTURA" - SCRIPTURE ALONE !*
As a protestant I have the greatest respect for Martin Luther, but there is one item that reveals a degree of contradiction to his claim of Solo Scripture.
The Roman Church protests that it transferred Christian worship from Saturday to Sunday by biblical command, and that to try to argue that the change was made in the Bible is both dishonest and a denial of Catholic authority. The Catholic Church argues that if Protestants want to base their teachings only on the Bible, “it should worship on Saturday!”
In July 1519, this point was clearly laid out in a debate between the Protestant reformer Martin Luther and Dr. Eck who was the most staunch defender of the catholic faith at the time.During the course of the debate, both men were coming down to their final appeals to the people.
Martin Luther’s final argument was essentially that “Dr. Eck doesn’t know a thing about Scripture and isn’t willing to listen to a thing about Scripture.” Dr. Eck’s refutation of Luther’s accusation was so devastating that it rendered Luther speechless and revealed a degree of hypocrisy in Luther's claim of Solo Scriptura.
What he said is a matter of historical record and here it is:
*“If you turn from the church to the Scriptures alone, then you must keep the Sabbath with the Jews, which has been kept since the beginning of the world.”*
    -Dr. Eck’s Enchiridion pp. 78-79
Dr. Eck had a good point.Martin Luther was accusing the Catholic Church of going in the wrong direction by putting its own Papal authority above scripture. But as Dr. Eck pointed out, Luther himself was not keeping the Sabbath. And if he really wanted to go by SOLA SCRIPTURA, then he needed to start keeping the Sabbath!
    *THE CATHOLIC CHURCH STATES*
“You may read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, and you will not find a single line authorizing the sanctification of Sunday. The Scriptures enforce the religious observance of Saturday, a day which we [the Catholic Church] never sanctify.”
    Faith of Our Fathers, 92nded., p. 89
There is absolutely no New Testament text stating that God, Jesus, or the apostles changed the Sabbath to Sunday, not a text, not a word. If there were, those chapters and verses would
be loudly heralded by Sabbath abolitionists.
    *A QUESTION TO SUNDAY KEEPERS*
IF SOLO SCRIPTURA IS SO IMPORTANT TO YOU - AS PROTESTANTS CLAIM - THEN PLEASE TELL ME - WHERE IN THE BIBLE CAN I FIND A SINGLE COMMAND THAT TELLS CHRISTIANS TO BEGIN KEEPING SUNDAY - THE FIRST DAY OF THE WEEK !
*FOR IF YOU CAN - I WILL WILLINGLY DELETE THIS ENTIRE COMMENT !*

Luther correctly taught that the sabbath commandment did not pertain to Christians, therefore Eck's rejoinder is mute. Luther said, "This commandment, therefore, according to its gross sense, does not concern us Christians; for it is altogether an external matter, like other ordinances of the Old Testament, which were attached to particular customs, persons, times, and places, and now have been made free through Christ."

Exodus 20:8] “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9] Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10] but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. Does this have to be exact the seventh day after creation?
Whatever the case, the Ancient Romans, during the Republic, did not use a seven day week, but rather went with eight days.
Rather than labelling the days of the week with actual names, at first the Romans labelled them with letters, A-H. Which later was changed to to names of their idol gods. Constantine; the first Christian Roman Emperor, made the seven day week official in AD 321. Due to the influence of both Rome and Christianity, this has been used in most regions of the world ever since. It is absolutely impossible to tell which is the 7th. Day since creation. When Yahweh gave the law to Moses it was still known. With the start of the Constantinian Roman calendar there’s no way we know.
Jesus told us what is the greatest command Matthew 22: 39 And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”
Galatians 3:24 Therefore the law was our TUTOR to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
We must understand that the command of gathering with the brethren and sisters in Christ still stands but not as a law but out of love to each other like Paul says, so to make a law of it, is not in keeping with the word of our Lord.
Colossians 2:16 So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths,
That the gathering on the first day started after the resurrection of Jesus Our Lord is evident from the Scriptures.
Acts 20:7 Now on the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul, ready to depart the next day, spoke to them and continued his message until midnight.
1 Corinthians 16:2 On the first day of the week let each one of you lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper, that there be no collections when I come.
John Calls the first day of the week: “The Lords Day” Revelation 1:10. I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s Day, and I heard behind me a loud voice, as of a trumpet,
God Rested on the 7th. Day but Christ after restoring Creation by removing the curse rested at the Right Hand Of God The Father, AT THE FIRST DAY.
      Hebrews 10:12 - But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;
One of the denominations that want to keep the Sabbath instead of the Lords-Day are the 7th. Day Adventists with strong Cult Beliefs.
Great emphasis is laid upon the teaching that the Sabbath day is on Saturday, and if a person does not keep Saturday as Sabbath, he cannot be saved. Ultimately, according to SDA theology, your salvation in the last days boils down to the day you worship on. Simply put, there is no salvation outside the SDA church. The Bible says we are saved by grace through faith and nothing more. Ephesians 2:8-9
Ellen G. White taught that all other churches except the SDA church were teaching lies from the Devil. Only SDA members are true and obedient believers; prayers spoken in other churches are only answered by the Devil. This is a man-made doctrine not found in the Bible.
They believe that in the last days just before Christ returns, only those worshipping on Saturday will be saved. They particularly believe that worshipping on Sunday will be the mark of the beast. They consider themselves to be the only true, remnant church and all others will be condemned in time. This is a man-made doctrine not found in the Bible. The mark of the beast will be a literal mark, either in your forehead or in your hand. Revelation 14:9 They practically as far as I know stand alone. Joining them would be unwise and far from Christian.

  • @johnfisher247
    @johnfisher247 Před 3 lety

Luther isn't scriptural in the fullest sense as he doesn't for example include texts of St Paul that modify Luthers own doctrine such as 1Corinthians 4. "Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful.3 I care very little if I am judged by you or by any human court; indeed, I do not even judge myself.4 My conscience is clear, but that does not make me innocent. It is the Lord who judges me." This means feeling justified or saved doesn't mean you are. A sinful nature means inclined towards sin. The analogy of an oil covering isnt correct. The oil is in every cell. Baptism is regeneration however the inclination is towards sinning. Habit and a misinformed conscience affect free will. "Free will is like a muscle that grows the more it is exercised". It can be weak in one area but strong in another. God offers us his free help (grace) which supports and changes us if we cooperate.

Luther didn't understand salvation. Salvation is a gift given to certain people at God's discretion, those who receive the gift are saved from sin and become slaves of righteousness (Romans 6;18). All people are damned pending God's mercy, God resists the proud, he gives grace to the humble (James 4;6). Remember how the Pharisees did not have eyes to see or ears to hear (Luke 10;21 and Romans 11;8)? God blinds most to the truth about Jesus, he grants repentance to the humble. Although it is God's will that all come to be saved, they're not humble enough. Malachi 3;16-18 talks about God being in charge of who would be saved when the Messiah came (4;5), the proud and wicked were going to be condemned (4;1) but the humble were going to be saved (enabled to believe that Jesus was the Christ). Jesus said "no one can come to me unless it is granted to him by my father (John 6;65), Matthew 16;17 confirms this aswell as John 6;44 and other verses. Ephesians 2;8 is about God choosing who is saved too. Matthew 7;21-23 shows that people that continue in sin but believe in Jesus as their saviour go to hell, Jesus never knew them because God never granted them repentance. Luther is in hell. Those who believe obey. Some who do not believe think they believe (Matthew 7;21) and they just find out after they die. God is not leaving it up to mankind to choose to be saved, God chooses who can believe. It does not matter if you went to church every week for 50 years, knowledge of truth and thus entry to the faith is granted by God at God's discretion, to the humble, not the proud.
Mankind only has partial free-will. The sinful nature is actually demonic spirits that come in as a result of ancestral sin and a persons sin. The spirits give the person urges to do evil, if they are not ashamed and humbled they cannot be given God's grace. If you are not sorry after having the devil do deeds through you how could God trust you and justify saving you. This life is a test, God saves those who hate evil.

My comments come from an Anabaptist perspective. There is another of Luther's quotes: "Sin bravely." This can be addressed with levity, but the weight of this statement is that, though we continue to err and sin, our salvation is never at risk because of God's grace. Baptism, in the Anabaptist theology, is an identification with the choice to become a Christian; hence, infant baptism is inappropriate. Salvation cannot be earned, so indulgences were un-Biblical. Also, the reliance on the mediation of the priests is suspect. The works you are challenged to contribute in the book of James are a manifestation of one's faith. Following the example of Christ calls people to love those around them, and this ensures we want to help others. I cannot accept the Pope as the "Vicar of Christ" as this is not Biblical. More importantly, though, many popes have been exceedingly ungodly, and attained the position of Pope through political machinations. The Borges and their abuses are one of the most egregious examples. My comments are made in reponse to your presentation - which I really appreciate. I am a person faith in the Mennonite (Anabaptist) tradition. I am not a theologian, and thoroughly enjoy discussing faith matters.

There's no conflict between the epistle on James and the rest of the bible .Saved by grace, God knows whose saved,The dead faith is seen by man not by God soread the next verse"Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works." It's between 2 mans not about God . If someone tells me I have faith and I see no works( following Gods commandments) how can I see faith there?? "Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone."Read James 2 and Romans 4 ! My opinion of the reformation is some catholic against catholics! And they still catholic! Salvation was all ways by Grace!!

You speak of the three ”only’s” as three problems are u sure that it’s not spoken as:
    My only Wife.
    My only secretary at work.
    And my only mistress?

The pope is not the person to represent God on Earth, there was only one "covenant keeper": Jesus-Christ the Son of God our Heavenly Father who came as the Lamb of God (SINLESS) to accomplish the law & the prophets without SIN and gave his innocent life, shed his blood on the cross(tree, post) when pierced by the Roman soldier (centurion) in ransom for the souls of so many who did repent ( turn to God) and learn from his Spirit to learn and KNOW God our Creator to have the Eternal life, with the help of Jesus-Christ who came from Heaven of Heavens down on Earth to live the life as we do, and worst, to die of his innocent life for the guilty of sinners against himself [{(" Romans 3 : 21-26")}]
PSALM 22:1 BC he worned (wear, bear)
our SIN, iniquities, rebellious behavior sickness on his body while on the cross
Jesus took the "CUP OF FIERCE WRATH OF GOD for US !
    PSALM 5: 4-6 !!!

Intresting video, but has lots of misinformation on Luthers views. As gradute in field of theology, I can state that Solaes should not be taken literally. They are short condenced way to give idea what docterine is. They should no be criticed blindly, ideas behind these word should be.
Sola scriptura means: Bible is highest authority not only. Doctrines can be made from tradition for example or from writings of church fathers, but they should not contradict Bible.
Also video overcritices Luthers views on epistle of James without any sources. Luther liked the epistle, but thought that it should be seen as part of whole Bible and not lone work.
When Luther say straw he means: Epistle is good, but does not give whole picture of faith.
And last weird thing is that video straith out lies about Luther views on sacraments. Luther believed that there is only two sacraments not three. And reason was that other sacraments were not given by Jesus.
