  • This video demonstrates how to wire a tachometer on almost any vehicle with EFI. In this video, I wired it up on a 1997 Toyota Tercel.

    What brand tachometer are you using? And if I may ask how much did it cost you?
    I'm considering buying one for a car that surprisingly didn't come with one from the factory (2005 Ford Focus) and not sure why the manufacturer didn't feel it was necessary to include on the gauge cluster. In a car with a manual gearbox especially, I feel it is very important to know what is going on with the engine at all times. That being said, I found a Bosch tachometer online for about $30. Is this a good brand?

      @daniellau5859 Před 4 lety

      Well, your distributor gets voltage somehow. You gotta splice the signal wire of your tach to the ignition wire of the distributor, as the tach will read how fast the distributor spins and releases voltage and use that as your rpms. Being from 69 theres bound to be a distributor with a rotor and cap lol

    • @BriggsGuy54
      @BriggsGuy54  Před 7 lety +1

      There is a plug in the distributor with 4 wires on it.
      The black one is the ground wire for wiring a tach. The ground wire provides a pulse signal.
      Use a wire splicer about 6 inches up the wire away from the distributor. The distance is in case the splice ever corrodes or fails you wont be stuck with it being too close to the plug making it hard to cut out the bad wire and reattach it.
      Understand that if your car ever shuts off in the future and has no spark this should be the first guess as to why. Not that it happened to me, but your cutting the wire open exposing it to air and other contaminants so it could always happen.

      +Cj Walsh I drove an '87 Caprice with the 4.3L fuel-injected... And an '87 Caprice with a 350 carb... I've driven an '85 Cutlass Supreme with a 305 V8 carb, an '86 Cutlass Supreme with the 307 V8 carb. Every one of those Rochester carbs sucked, but once you drop in a better carb, they run FOREVER!
      I personally have an '87 LeSabre, even with the little 3.8L she is a great old girl. Not as good as a Regal or Grand National, I may not beat someone off the line, but once I hit 3rd, punks are in my rearview realizing they just got whooped by a a thirty-something driving a Granny Car. They don't make cars like that anymore. *sigh*

    it seems to appear to be a manual transmition by seeing three pedals so my question is why does it not have one I nevr seen a manual tran. not have one whole purpose so you don;t over draft the engine to the gear shifting

    • @BriggsGuy54
      @BriggsGuy54  Před 9 lety

      Kangol Kid It is a manual! Good point! Having a tachometer in the gauge cluster is actually a manufacture option. I have no idea why they don't come standard. Surprisingly the car had 262,000 when I bought it and those were put all on it with no tach. This was the first thing I did to the car after I had it on the road. I couldn't stand not knowing what I was revving it.

      @chocoroll8D Před 8 lety

      Kangol Kid I drive a manual Hilux and it doesn't have a tacho. You can just go by ear or how the car feels to drive.

      +Kangol Kid Yeah my parent's 2000 Ford Escort is manual and doesn't have a tach either. I learned how to drive stick with that car.
      Me: "But when do I shift, dad?"
      Dad: "When you feel like it"

      @Spaethon Před 8 lety +1

      +Kangol Kid I've had a 89 Mazda 323 and currenty drive a 99 Mirage; both with no tachometer. If you really learn how to drive a manual, you don't need one. The best of us use our ears, not our eyes

      Shadizzleify the green wire should be on the coil ground so I dont think it makes a difference. Even if it shorted it would make things better? lol

    • @MrAhicks66
      @MrAhicks66 Před 8 lety

      +Shadizzleify I would suggest using plastic split loom, it's cheap enough, and will offer a decent amount of protection for the wire, since it is likely to rub against the metal and possibly wear through the insulation.
