The moment when Kegan says "singers like you, who have...." and then my name is literally on the screen haha! 2:08 But yes, I can confirm. This course has been an absolute game changer for me. I have had so many break-throughs in the last few month. And it just keeps getting better.

sounds like an interview i saw with russell from symphony x, the interviewer was asking him about vocal technique and hes like im afraid im a natural i just learned support in choir class in highschool and found things along the way, i was like whaaaa...this guy lol
ha - what a bastard! Incredible singer though, I used to love The Damnation Game - haven't listened to it in yeeeeeears. There was another album around the time, SOS by Lefay that was awesome too, not too many people have heard of.
Incredible voice right, odyssey is one of my favourite prog metal albums, his skill goes thru the roof there, he did mention he had an incredible mimicking capacity and thats how he learned to sing like that, listening to his favourite singers, Pavaroti actually said something similar in one of his workshops, his parents were tenors so he was allmost forced to become a tenor he joked, the missing link for him was support as well, thou he had incredible knowledge of the voice and could actually explain things, one could get discouraged after listening to these guys but i actually find the opposite, they give hope for the rest of us XD everything is possible :)@@FoundationVocalStudio

I don't really know Metal Church (somehow) but I listened to fake healer and immediately it reminded me of your style. I can see the influence Mike Howe had on your voice.
Yes! Huge for me. Probably even bigger than Chris Cornell.... Mike Howe, Paul Rodgers, Layne Staley - all a big influence on how I like to sing in my mid range. For the higher stuff, I really love Steve Marriot and Glenn Hughes, along with classic era CC too. K
Badlands from this album is also a killer.... and The Spell Can't be Broken is something I'm trying to get their new singer Marc to do when they tour here in December ha.
Just saw them here in Aus a few months back - Marc Lopes is a dear friend of mine, my head was ripped cleanly from my shoulders watching him sing in person. I was in touch with Mike Howe too, lovely guy. Best - K
Nice dig there the cassette. I sold all my cassettes around 1998. And all my cd’s maybe 5 years ago. When I was young (10, in 1986) my mom allowed me to subscribe to Columbia. Don’t know if it was existing where you live. Anyway, I picked all my albums in the metal section. Random selections cause there was no way to know these bands back then. So I ended up with many albums like Dokken, Ozzy, Wasp, Krokus,… and Motley Crue. All that to say that Motley Crue became my favorite band for the next 6-7 years. At that time I wanted to sign like Vince Neil. I’d still like to (not how he sound now though 🤦♂️). I often sign home sweet home…. An octave higher then him 😢. And there goes another very long comment from me 😂.
Still got all my cassettes! My old Jeep with a cassette deck died recently, so I'm on the hunt for another jalopy that I can blast Obituary and Metal Church in and pretend it's 1990 again ha.
@@FoundationVocalStudio when I was young, 6 or 7 maybe cars had 8 tracks players. Remember those cd players with cassette adapters for cars 😂😂😂. Man I’m so fucking old 😂😂😭
i wanted to ask something not particularly related to singing. That is, how do you sound so 'bright'(i dont know the correct word) when you speak? When you speak the lowness of you voice reflects, maybe that's vocal fry? i have a low voice too, but my voice is not so 'bright', idk how to describe it but it doesnt have that vocal fry element in it...
It's actually something I've worked on in my speaking voice too - there's a touch of twang in the way I speak, so no, it's not vocal fry which is unpitched vibration of the vocal folds. I do my best not to speak so low, but it definitely slips my mind sometimes, especially in videos. I used to have TONS of trouble being heard at a bar or venue before a show, and I'd wear out my voice just from speaking - so, I started applying some of the concepts from vocal technique into my speech, and low and behold my voice is a lot more comfortable, brighter and it cuts through a crowded room like a sword even with a relatively low voice. Best - K
@@FoundationVocalStudio so, how do you do it? how do you make it brighter? i have the same problem....people cant hear me😞 cuz i speak low in pitch and in volume. how do you make it brighter?
First up, speak a little higher, your voice probably isn't as low as you think - I'm speaking higher than is really natural in most of these videos. Scondly, find a "buzz" in a vocal exercise at the pitch you generally speak. I speak anywhere from D2 to C3 or something like that, find a buzzy sound in that range and then speak with it. Best - K
How in the the name of Zeus’ butthole do you get that (almost fry) rasp in your upper range ⁉️ I can do it all the way up into the start of the 4th octave… but it just smooths out after that. Pushing isn’t the answer… can’t seem to find fry up there… it has to be a different sort of engagement 🤷🏻♂️
It's not fry - sure, it's a similar mechanism, however, you're going for something that isn't practical in that range if that's your intention. Focus on how that 'fry' in your lower range is effecting the resonance instead of the rattling in your throat. I know naming conventions and terms are annoying, and sometimes semantics - however, I'm not using vocal fry for my distortion, and this distinction is important in a practical sense. Best - K
Good info, thanks Keegan! I am thinking I might just try something like sustaining a higher note and mess with the vowel shapes, as well as thinning and mixing levels etc to see if I can lock onto a piece of it 👍🏻
Awesome advice dude. Bang on 🤘

Hi Kegan, could you make another video talking about Layne Stayle's vocal technique? Love all your videos dude.
I've been avoiding videos about specific singers because it seems to just upset people, but at some point I'm sure I will. Best - K

Do you have tips for singing with more emotion?
Hi Kegan can you please show again how to find distortion in the mix voice, you used to have a video on your other channel, thanks.
It's something I'll cover in future videos - I don't really want to be "the grit guy" so much, but sure. K
