Ah well, if there's any kit that deserves an extravagant review, it's this MG Alex version 2.0, especially considering what I said about that 1.0 review lol.
But yeah, hoping to slim the next few videos down. Ya know, really get this whole process down to a week of full time work, or 2 weeks of part time, just for my own sanity lol
Anyway, - Production notes for myself to look over at a later date but by all means read if you're into video production -
- I really wanted this video to be a step up from previous reviews, but at the same time this is a newer kit, so I kind of pushed to get this out quicker. It’s a weird dichotomy, wanting quality, but also wanting speed. I don’t like it. I need to review more old school kits, those don’t have an expiration date for video relevance lol.
- This was definitely the wrong kit to push for a quick turn around. Too much to run through. 17 minutes was honestly trimmed down compared to what this could've been. If I ran with the first script, it easily could've broken 20 minutes.
- I actually locked myself away for a week to see if it was possible for me to have a more frequent upload schedule, however with the size of this kit it was kind of doomed to fail.
- I spent a really long time on this script, really trying to edit it down, but I just couldn’t. There’s just so much going on in this kit. The script ended up 11 pages compared to the usual 7-8.
- I shot a whole unboxing video before this, and edited about half of it's expected 25 minute run time, but wasn't happy with it. I just don't like the off handed and speculative nature of an unboxing. I think "why tell me what you THINK the kit will be like, when you could just build it and tell me what it's ACTUALLY like." This is totally the wrong mind set for this site, but whatever~
- I messed with the “picture styles” on my 6D Mark II. Up until now I had just used them based on name, but this time I actually got into the purpose behind each. Turns out, while I had a set based on ‘fine detail’ I had 2 sliders up that actually DECREASED detail lol. So I fixed that. I'm going to do some tests before the next video, hopefully fixing the contrast inconsistency between the still images and video footage. Really excited for that.
- Side note, “picture style” only applies to JPEG's and video files. So this only affects the video footage in these reviews, but not the stills since I shoot in RAW.
- The thumbnail's not great. 0080 turns out is 90% extreme low angles and the other 10% extreme high angles. It’s actually brilliant directing, as it really puts you in the civilian’s (Al’s) shoes during the fights. However, when it comes to making a thumbnail… it’s terrible. Shots are never gonna have the right perspective, so I kind of just gave up. While the shot used is a low angle, it doesn't quite sync up with the background.
- I lost the right shoulder flap for the full armor. It just went missing... I think it fell into one of the plastic bags before I tossed them. I don't really care, since the full armor doesn't look that great imo, but still, it made getting the footage in this review weird. Thankfully, I angled the camera and cut around it, so it wasn't too visible.
- I used a lot of stuff learned from the MKII review here. Lots of split screens and cropped overlay images. While I think it looks good, it also takes a ton of time.

Yes, I agree. His reviews are short and too the point, with good camera angles, lighting, and information about the model kit itself. Unfortunately, he is overshadowed by the 2 big Gunpla reviewers that have a monopoly, because they review every kit that comes out. Mecha GaiSHITzu and ZakuDORKius.
I'd say your video is the best (English-speaking) MG Alex 2.0 review I've seen so far, even when compared to the more popular gunpla-reviewer channels out there. It is thorough and wholesome without the need to shit on the 1.0 MG. Keep up the great work, mate.

I just realized that Yakuta Izubuchi, the designer of many of the mobile suits from Char's Counterattack, including the Nu, Sazabi and the Hi-Nu, designed this suit, as well as most of the mobile suits for War in the Pocket. Izubuchi is a straight boss.
When this mg first got announced, I went bloody ecstatic, immediate pre order and can't wait to build when I move house this weekend!

Solid review as always man! Really hoping that sales of this kit urge Bandi into rolling out a MG Kämpfer 2.0 sooner then later. War in the pocket was one of the best OVA of the OYW. Keep up the great work!

They showed off that shield gatling gimmick in the very first scene of build divers re rise, which I happened to watch right after this. It was super cool to see this review and then actually catch it in action.
I am a fan of Gundam since some years and a fan of gunpla for a bit more than a year and the first one that I wanted to build was the Alex; sadly It wasn´t aviable at the time and went from kit to kit and only a year later I see this piece of art. I am such a lucky guy, I can´t think of me waiting more than 10 years for my favorite kit.

Great review, it was definitely worth the wait. It's just sad that the Zaku Fz didn't get an MG, but still, the RE/100 looks like a good kit, thank God. They both look awesome together! Waiting for the next review ^^

I wonder, could you also do the Gouf MG 2.0?
I have both the 1.0 and the 2.0. I used the 1.0 to put the Chobham armor on from the 2.0 (took a bit of work, but I got it to fit) for display, and left the 2.0 unarmored to show off that lovely body. The armor does hide a lot of the 1.0's faults and what's left exposed doesn't really matter that much once the armor is covering about 85% of the Alex 1.0's body.
Leds now are wireless (amazon) or come with super thin motor winding wire attatched (Evans) so all these clear piece models have new life. Always best when all one needs is black paint or liner to make a model read scale. Thanks for reviewing!

It took me a year to get one at a decent price but it's cause of you're video that I pulled the trigger.

Btw, how exactly did you get the clear piece for the mohawk and eyes green? I'm a little new to more in depth customization, mostly just doing painting and lining, and I definitely wanna forego those foil stickers.
I got this kit a few months ago and I have to say, it was an amazing kit! My only issue was that for some reason, the balljoints for the wrists were just simply too tight. It was almost as if it didn't want to go in the socket. I ended up snapping the wrist and I had to glue it together. I've watched some other reviews like this one and it shows that they can move the wrist no problem. I don't know if I did something wrong but either way, this kit is still great a posing. Also great review!
The wrist breaking is common. So the design is flawed, not necessarily your fault

I would love to get this guy, but I'd drive myself mad trying to get the perfect inner frame to Alex to armour frame to armour gradient for displaying him. I'd want him with the bazooka in one hand, the rifle in the other, and both gatling cannons exposed in a "full salvo" pose, as well.
This video was one of the more convincing reasons for me to buy an alex of my own, it's awesome but one main thing, the wrists would be extremely tight so just watch out for those wrists.

I'm curious, when you paint with a black gundam marker do you just use the marker itself or do you use a paint brush?
I just use the marker. 2-3 coats, usually done in about 5 minutes. I’m pretty lazy.
@@redheadphones6 damn, it looks pretty good despite that. Just got an HGUC Kampfer and was gonna try coloring in all the thrusters with a yellow gundam marker, praying for a 2.0 MG.

It's the zaku II kai, NOT the F2. The F2s are seen in 0083, not 0080.

@@skyyswaggstudios2934 i have the zaku 2 kai btw and it's a great re100. first polycap-less re100. that being said, personally, i like the pbandai gunblastor more. i enjoyed building it more. i also enjoyed the mg double x more than alex, even though alex is a much better kit overall. again preferences.
i do recommend the zaku 2 kai though, that heat hawk molded in green is absolutely beautiful

I haven't built too many mgs, and I haven't built any re/100 kits, but I can reccomend the mg acguy, weird mg, but a good one if you don't mind a spring and a couple screws, the zakucannon is also pretty good, I think it uses the zaku 2 2.0 frame
I have the MG f90, E/S parts and Cold climate GM coming this month, but october im screwed with the GM dominance, HGUC Penelope, HGUC Palerider and something else i forgot about lol I still have ReGZ custom and Rid Wolf's GM sniper II waiting for me as well lol

I don't know if many people had the same issue, but the wrists are prone to breaking easily. I've owned two, one I built myself and one I bought prebuilt, and both had broken wrist pegs.
Anyone having problems with their 2.0 wrists? Maybe I stuck them in too deep but now they’re super tight. To the point where the wrists break off. Any solutions to this before I snap off my other wrist?
I do agree. This is a good model kit. But I personally prefer the 8th ms team anime over war in the pocket.
8th Ms team= more and better battles
0080= much better actual story-telling, and relatable human characters.

Only things i didn't like was the neck and wrists. Going to mod them.

I did one a few years ago, but the review is... uh... not great haha. Both in terms of production quality and my critiques. I recently made it unlisted so it wouldn't pop up in search results or related videos. It is still available on my channel in the "MG Reviews" playlist though if you're still curious. It was made before the announcement of this 2.0 as well, so figured it really didn't serve a purpose.
@@redheadphones6 thanks for the reply wouldn't have found it otherwise. So the gattlings pop out from the forearms and aren't separate parts, right?
Also, critiques aside, i still got a good look at the kit itself so i see where the 2.0 was a MAJOR improvement from the full inner frame to the opening gimmicks in the shield and armor to accommodate the forearm gatlings.
Could you explain why the V fin is split during the build part of the video because I’m worried about stability
That's the broken V-fin from 14:37. Thought it looked cooler for the build section since half the armor was off, might as well use that half version of the V-fin lol

The frame is a little bland, so there isn't a ton of detail underneath, but you can if you want. There's no metal screws or poly-caps that stand out, so you should be ok.
Do you think you'll ever do any rg/hg reviews?
Definitely! I'm working on a more casual style of review where I can take a look at different grades. Hoping to have the first one out in a few days.

The MG Jegan has moulded in pistons too, its kind of a shame Bandai seems to be neglecting inner frame detail like that.
Really? I haven't built that kit yet, but really want to. The Jegan is probably my favorite grunt suit, might even be next review!
I agree though, I miss the mid to late 2000's 2.0 kits where every joint had a moving piston. Modern kits are great for a sturdy build, but lack the fun of older kits.
I think that the stability the molded piston provides is better than the detail. The pistons continue to disconnect, forcing me to just take them off. Bandai seems to be focusing on the actual quality of the kit rather than the detail.
The MG Jegan is a great example of modern Bandai's design philosophy....they are ramping up color separation in master grades to 11, while settling in with a much more basic polystyrene inner frame. Luckily, the MG Jegan is pretty cheap and it's a straightforward build. I think the Origin RX-78-2 compared to the 2.0 RX-78-2 is an even better example of this. But yeah, I regret that we probably won't see any more true 2005-2010 era master grade 2.0 kits with full ABS inner frames and pistons and transmission rods...That said, the Jegan really has astonishingly good color seperation. Modern real grades are a different story....the RG Sazabi was an absolute banger on every single level, and I can't wait to build the Zeong.

Man, this was a kit I really wanted to like, but the wrists are really weak for some reason and break whenever you try to move them. It's definitely a great looking kit, but it's hard to appreciate it when both of its wrists break and you only asked Bluefin for one...
It's Chobham, not Chobam. It's also a real type of tank armour named after the British material development facility in Chobham, Surrey where it was developed during the 60's.

I thought the same thing, but apparently it is actually 'Chobam' without the 2nd H. It is based off the real tank armor, but Japan gonna Japan and decided to alter the spelling. In canon, it's the abbreviation for "Ceramics Hybrid Outer-shelled Blow up Act-on Materials."

Nice review. I was not thrilled with this. The MG standard really is dipping just to be commercially viable. I'm ok with MGs being expensive as long as it delivers on the standards that Bandai established.
100% agree. As happy as I am to finally get an Alex ver 2.0, I can't help but remember the 2.0's from around 2005 - 2010 that had really intricate engineering, moving pistons on every limb, and great part separation for little details. Newer inner frames/engineering seem to be more about function than form with lots of faceless surfaces and bare-bone limbs. It's a little disappointing.
@@redheadphones6 true that. best example would be the zz ver ka. katoki (i refuse to call it 2.0) I miss the 2.0s like the zaku or rx-78 2.0 inner frames. they are pure joy. both functional and representative of the fiction. the Zaku 2.0 frame in particular is a true representation of the monocoque frame. it even has the ultracompact 'to'minovsky generator represented well. good times.

Thanks, but I actually do almost all my detailing with Gundam markers. Even before I got lazy and was using more 'professional' methods, I usually used spray paint. Sorry!

I have the 1.0 version, with full armor. It's pretty much ok if you just want to pose it with the armor on.

It really sucks seeing modern "2.0's" using what is literally a high grade construction method in the upper arm. I've built that part I don't know how many times in high grade kits. 2007-2009 really was a golden era for Bandai master grades we might never see again. This inner frame is even more lame than the Jegan.
@AgentGodzillaRP1 I don't think G-Frames look good, they're too busy and take too much liberty with proportions.....As Headphones noted in the review, they did a very good job on this 2.0 kit with an anime accurate sculpt and proportions, that is something that has always been a feature of 2.0 kits. 2007-2009 master grades are by and large actually very line art and anime friendly, most of the mechanical details are in the frame and gimmicks. It's mostly just a shame seeing all of the inner frame widgets get sacrificed or heavily simplified with molded parts. Zaku II MG 2.0's inner frame is kind of the perfect example of what I'm talking about as a classic 2.0.
mf the innerframe budget went into this kits outer armor innerframe 😭
without the innerframe the chobam armor would've been pretty difficult to add around the kit and the armor would've fragile and easy to break

You could call the chobam armor a full armor form if not for the fact there's actually a official full armor Alex Gundam design

I just compared to the 1.0 and you're right, I kinda like the 1.0's slimmed up look. It's a bit more anime-esq. But there's something to be said for how over-the-top bulky this 2.0's take is.
Also, I quadruple checked on if it was cool to use 'Full Armor' instead of Chobam Armor, and when the Alex has the Chobam armor on it is indeed 'RX-78NT-1FA.' The Chobam Armor is the name of the armor itself, but when it is attached the Gundam Alex becomes the Gundam Alex "Full Armor" with the FA at end.
This is kind of confusing since as you said there is another Full Armor variation, called the "Full Armor Gundam Alex" or 'FA-78-NT-1.' It's more like the standard RX-78 Full Armor variants, and as the FA at the beginning.

WARNING: the wrist ball joint is very stiff and if you aren’t careful you run the risk of tearing it off of the ball point. It happened to me and I don’t want it to happen to you.
Is there any easy way to loosen the joint? I know about sanding, but I don’t want to risk ruining it.
Cool kit, but I don't think it's as anime-accurate as you say. Pretty far from it actually. Not my Alex.
The Alex is so small tho for a MG, i just bought it and it’s about the same size and the Rg Nu gundam

I mean of course nu is gonna big, like shits 22 meters, of course a 1/144 scale of nu is gonna be the size of a smaller MG like crossbone
