One of the reasons there are so many Catholics is that when the Indonesians invaded they made it mandatory for the Timorese to adopt a monotheistic religion. The Timorese, many of whom were animist, said fine We’ll become Catholics.
The Church was actually an important part of the independence struggle. The Indonesians tried to ban the use of local languages in official use, however the main mother tongue of tetun was permitted in Church. So the Church played an important role in preserving a national language. Tetun is now one of the two official languages in Timor Leste.

The ‘house’ you found in the mountains is actually an old hotel built during Portuguese times in the town of Maubisse. I understand it has been renovated. I don’t think it was open when I was there, but it may be open now.
The other thing is - no you would not want to swim on the beaches on Jaco. Crocodiles are revered in Timor Leste, and hence their population has grown because they are not culled. It is often not safe to swim on the isolated beaches.
