  • Step one in my journey with my Dutch Barge. Recorded in April 2020 during lock down conditions. I desperately want a Tjalk. So a year ago I bought one. I had no intention of having a CZcams channel until now. So this videos a clumsy first attempt at edited together a limited collection of photos and video to tell the story of my first year of ownership.

      Thank you so much! Get one they’re awesome. Also, they need to be saved. Sadly, be aware that if you’re in the UK and you want to buy one in Holland, as of Jan 1 2021 you now have to pay VAT when you import. 😔

    Just found your channel and am so enjoying watching your aquisition of De Vrouwe Linda. Have been burning with passion for a Tjalk for a long time now and has resulted in many 'heated discussions' with Hubby, as I want to sell the house to get one. He, a lifelong pleasure sailor, is dead against it! We live in the Cambridgeshire Fens, and these beautiful craft/homes are often seen here, which raises my longing even higher. Thanks for sharing your story - Teresa

      Hahaha! I’m not getting between you two on that argument!!! I think of it this way, if poverty and never ending tasks will never diminishes your love of the boat, then you’re fine. It’s not logical and possibly a form of madness.

      No, still have the Diesel engine… Turns out restoring a boat is hard!😂

  • @ThisNarrowboatAdventure

    Thank you for making this it's really helpful! I'd like to know more about the sites you looked at boats in holland?

    • @canicebannon
      @canicebannon  Před 3 lety +1

      Hello. The way I did this was by going down rabbit holes. Start with Apollo Duck and use the search term “Barge”, you also have to change the setting in “advance search” to world wide or whatever the option is that gets you off the UK only pages. Once there you’ll be presented with boats in the Netherlands sold by Dutch Brokers. Then once you’ve identified the brokers you can search their company website. They won’t advertise the cheapy boats on Apollo Duck, but they do have them. It took months to find Linda with way..... Good luck!

  • @dandkexpeditionsllc9638

      That’s interesting, I’m getting close to “making plans” (covid allowing) to go through the hull and patch up the redundant outlets, (sea toilet, etc). Where are you based?

    Hi Canice- hubby and I are liveaboard wide beamers working through all your videos re Linda and are in awe of your bravery and “can do” attitude- we love Dutch barges! Quick (slightly unrelated!) question in relation to your narrow boat Jorja.. I would love to grow ivy to trail around the bow doors.. was this easy to do and maintain? I’m conscious not to leave planters touching the roof but Jorja’s bow looked amazing! Any tips? 🙂🙂

    • @canicebannon
      @canicebannon  Před 2 lety +2

      Yes it is very easy. I have the sinks propped up on wooden cubes. To keep them off the roof and there is a plug hole sticking down making the base unstable.
      I chose sinks because they hold water better in the summer, whereas terracotta will dry out in an instant.
      I have a mixture of variegated ivy from B&Q and wild ivy from cuttings. Both work equally well. The ivy is indestructible, but the key is to feed the pots regularly in the summer. I use miracle grow, usually every two weeks.
      I cut the ivy back now but it took about three years to cover the front.
      As for the rest of the planting alpines are always a safe bet. Hardy plants that can handle drought when you go away….
      In summary. Ivy is very suited once you feed it.

      @@canicebannon thank you, really useful info! I have 3 dogs and I think ivy may be poisonous to them 😳 so maybe have to go for a non toxic variety?! but trailing plants are something I will get into in the spring… look so good on a boat…congratulations btw- boat looks amazing!

    Totally admire your sense of adventure. The thought of renovating a genuine Dutch barge would give me nightmares 😂. Just as a matter of interest are you a member of the DBA (Dutch Barge Association)?

    • @canicebannon
      @canicebannon  Před 4 lety +2

      Jorja was bought six years ago and was in good structural condition. I didn’t want a restoration job at that point. Anything with a moving part broke overtime and I learned to fix it all myself. So, when I bought the Dutch Barge 18 months ago I was clear in my mind about what was ahead of me. (Poverty!😂) Again, the boat is structurally sound, but plan is to restore the parts of the boat that are historic and original and then see where it takes me. You’ll be glad to know the mast and counter weight are nearly finished and should be completed by 1st August. That will be a big mile stone in preserving the boat as a sailing vessel. I will become a member of the DBA in due course.

    ❤Hello good evening, I would like to ask you a question,
    Can this type of vessel cross oceans, like a cruising sailboat? sorry for the question. Thank you very much in advance.

    • @canicebannon
      @canicebannon  Před 6 měsíci +1

      A boat like mine is insured up to Force 4. However, would easily handle force 7, but would be a miserable experience. Beyond that, nope.
      The problem is that you need the sides to be much higher to avoid swamping from bigger waves.
      The main problem is the unpredictable weather….
      In summary this boat is not designed for ocean sailing.

      ❤ Thanks for your attention and the tip, I'm planning to build mine myself, in the same style as a leeboard keel. Massive thanks for the tip and videos.
